Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is a way for an excited organic molecule to recycle triplet-state population into a singlet state that can emit light. The key step is thermally assisted reverse intersystem crossing (RISC), a triplet-to-singlet conversion. In an organic solar cell, however, delayed light is not the desired output. Researchers are testing whether TADF molecules or TADF-like charge-transfer states can instead improve exciton transport, energy transfer, charge separation, recombination, or active-layer morphology. The effect depends on the exact molecule, blend, layer placement, concentration and device architecture; TADF is not a universal efficiency upgrade.
The TADF state sequence
When an organic semiconductor absorbs a photon, it is promoted from its ground state to an electronically excited state. Excited states have spin character. A singlet excited state has paired overall spin, while a triplet state has parallel spin character. These labels matter because radiative transitions to the singlet ground state obey different spin-selection rules.

- Excitation: light supplies the energy that creates an excited molecule or an excited donor–acceptor charge-transfer state. Thermal energy does not create the original excitation.
- Initial singlet and triplet populations: after excitation, the system can occupy singlet and triplet excited states through internal conversion, intersystem crossing and other competing pathways.
- Thermally assisted RISC: some triplet population receives enough thermal assistance to cross back to singlet character. This triplet-to-singlet return is called reverse intersystem crossing.
- Delayed fluorescence: the regenerated singlet can return radiatively to the ground state. Because it was fed from a triplet reservoir, its emission arrives later than prompt fluorescence produced directly from the initially populated singlet state.
The word “delayed” describes the timing of emission, not a separate kind of photon. A molecule may therefore show a prompt fluorescence component followed by a slower TADF component. In a photovoltaic device, the same excited-state pathways can compete with charge generation, so delayed fluorescence is a diagnostic and a possible intermediate pathway rather than the cell’s useful output by itself.

A small energy difference between the lowest excited singlet and triplet states generally makes thermally assisted conversion easier. It is often described as the singlet–triplet energy gap, or ΔEST. Reducing that gap can increase the probability that ordinary thermal energy will help a triplet reach singlet character at operating temperature.

Gap size alone does not determine the RISC rate. Several factors can accelerate or suppress the conversion:
- Charge-transfer and local-excitation mixing: a state with both charge-transfer and locally excited character can have different transition strengths and spin–orbit interactions from a purely charge-transfer state.
- Molecular vibrations: nuclear motion can provide the vibronic coupling needed to connect states of different spin character. Rigidifying a molecule may reduce some losses but can also alter the vibrational pathways that RISC needs.
- Environment: host polarity, dielectric response, packing, temperature and local disorder shift excited-state energies and lifetimes.
- Energy transfer: excitation can move between molecules before emission or charge separation. Förster resonance energy transfer, Dexter transfer and interfacial transfer can either feed a useful state or divert energy into a loss channel.
- Competing rates: fluorescence, phosphorescence, non-radiative decay, charge separation and triplet–triplet annihilation all compete with RISC. A small ΔEST is helpful only if the rest of the kinetic network remains favorable.
Consequently, a material described as TADF should be evaluated by measured lifetimes, temperature dependence, quantum yields and device behavior, not by its singlet–triplet gap in isolation.
What TADF could do inside an organic solar cell
Organic solar cells convert absorbed light into mobile electrons and holes. Donor and acceptor materials create excitons, and those bound electron–hole pairs must reach an interface, separate into charges and travel to electrodes before recombining. TADF is relevant only insofar as its excited-state dynamics alter one or more of those steps.
Extend or redirect exciton lifetimes
A triplet state can act as a longer-lived reservoir than a prompt singlet. If a TADF component stores excitation and later returns it to a singlet or transfers it to a neighboring semiconductor, the effective time available for diffusion or interfacial transfer may increase. That benefit is conditional: a long-lived triplet can also become a trap or undergo non-radiative decay, and oxygen or defects can quench triplet population.

Transfer energy to a photovoltaic absorber
A TADF molecule may absorb light strongly and pass excitation to a donor or acceptor through resonance energy transfer. In a favorable geometry, this broadens the wavelengths that contribute to useful excitations or moves energy toward an interface. The transfer must outpace non-radiative loss and must end in a state that can separate into charges. Fluorescence from the TADF molecule itself is not evidence that a current was generated.
Influence charge-transfer states
At a donor–acceptor interface, an electron and hole can occupy a charge-transfer state. Mixing between charge-transfer and local-excitation character can affect the energy needed for charge separation and the likelihood of radiative or non-radiative recombination. TADF-like behavior in such a state may indicate that triplet and singlet pathways are coupled, but it does not by itself prove that more free charges reach the electrodes.
Alter packing and morphology
An additive can change crystallinity, domain size, molecular orientation or interface area while also changing excited-state lifetimes. Those structural effects may improve extraction independently of RISC. For that reason, a higher power-conversion efficiency should not automatically be assigned to delayed fluorescence unless spectroscopy and morphology measurements support that attribution.

| Study and architecture | TADF component and placement | Reported device or optical result | Interpretation and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advanced Functional Materials, 2026 | DMAC-DPS incorporated at 0.1 wt.% in the L8-BO acceptor layer of a layer-by-layer PM6/L8-BO organic photovoltaic | Power-conversion efficiency increased from 17.56% to 19.20%; short-circuit current density increased from 25.36 to 27.37 mA/cm²; reported open-circuit voltage was 0.906 V and fill factor was 77.4% | The authors associate the result with efficient RISC, energy-level compatibility, Förster resonance energy transfer and favorable charge transfer. These values apply to the stated formulation and architecture, not to TADF materials generally. |
| Chemical Engineering Journal, 2024 | Multiple-resonance TADF emitter BNS-H1 used as a dual-functional solid additive in PM6:BTP-eC9 cells | Reported power-conversion efficiency: 18.8% | The proposed role combines exciton-lifetime changes with active-layer morphology effects. The efficiency figure does not isolate RISC from packing or processing changes. |
| Materials Horizons, 2022 | Model donor–acceptor blend exhibiting TADF-dominated photoluminescence | Approximately 22% photoluminescence quantum efficiency, 24% photocurrent external quantum efficiency and approximately 0.1 V non-radiative voltage loss | The authors discuss hybridization between charge-transfer and local-excitation states. These optical and electrical values describe one model system and are not representative targets for every organic solar cell. |
Power-conversion efficiency combines the current density, voltage and fill factor under the stated illumination and measurement protocol. Short-circuit current density reflects extracted photocurrent when the external voltage is zero; open-circuit voltage is the voltage at zero external current; fill factor describes how square the current–voltage curve is. A TADF additive can raise efficiency through any combination of these quantities, so the complete metric set matters more than efficiency alone.
TADF in an OLED versus TADF in a solar cell
The same molecular photophysics can serve opposite device goals.
| Question | Emitter-oriented OLED use | Photovoltaic use |
|---|---|---|
| Desired output | Photons emitted from singlet excited states | Separated electrons and holes collected as current |
| Role of RISC | Recover triplet excitons so they can produce delayed light | Potentially redirect or recycle excitation before charge separation, transfer energy, or recombination |
| Main performance tests | External quantum efficiency, emission spectrum, delayed lifetime and operational stability | Current density, voltage, fill factor, efficiency, external quantum efficiency, transient response and stability |
| Typical failure mode | Triplet loss, quenching or degradation lowers light output | Triplet trapping, non-radiative decay or unwanted recombination lowers extracted charge |
It is therefore incorrect to transfer an OLED statement such as “triplet harvesting” directly into a claim of near-unity solar conversion. In an OLED, delayed fluorescence is the intended light-producing endpoint. In a solar cell, emitting that photon can represent energy lost from the electrical pathway unless the excitation was first used or transferred in a way that improves charge generation.

Temperature-dependent emission
TADF emission should become more accessible as temperature rises over a relevant range because thermal energy assists triplet-to-singlet conversion. The measurement is normally compared with prompt and delayed lifetimes and with a kinetic model. Heating a sample for this experiment does not mean that the operating solar cell requires an external heat source.
Time-resolved photoluminescence
Prompt and delayed components reveal whether a long-lived emissive population exists. The delay must be assigned carefully: aggregation, traps, excimers and other states can also produce slow emission.
Transient photocurrent and photovoltage
These measurements test whether a proposed long-lived state changes extraction, transport or recombination. A longer optical lifetime without a corresponding electrical improvement may indicate that excitation is being stored rather than converted to useful current.
External quantum efficiency and steady-state current
Spectral photocurrent can show whether a TADF component contributes to absorbed wavelengths or improves collection. It should be interpreted alongside absorption and photoluminescence, because an optical feature can be present without generating free carriers.

Morphology and energy-level analysis
Microscopy, scattering, thermal analysis and spectroscopy can reveal domain changes, molecular orientation and interfacial mixing. Energy-level measurements test whether transfer from the TADF component to donor or acceptor states is energetically plausible. These data help separate an RISC explanation from a morphology-only explanation.
How to evaluate a TADF solar-cell claim
- Identify the exact material and location. Record whether it is a donor, acceptor, interlayer or low-concentration additive. The same molecule can behave differently in a bulk blend and at an interface.
- Check the concentration and processing. A reported optimum such as 0.1 wt.% is a formulation result, not a universal recipe. Solvent, annealing, layer thickness and deposition order can change morphology.
- Separate measured metrics from proposed causes. Efficiency, current, voltage and fill factor are measured outputs. RISC, energy transfer and charge-transfer hybridization are mechanistic interpretations that require supporting evidence.
- Look for temperature and time-resolved data. Without delayed-lifetime and temperature-dependent evidence, a material labelled TADF may be acting mainly as a morphological or optical additive.
- Check electrical trade-offs. A higher current can accompany a lower voltage or fill factor. Evaluate the complete current–voltage curve and spectral response rather than one headline number.
- Ask whether the result reproduces. Demonstrations from one laboratory, architecture or batch do not establish performance across organic solar cells. Reproducibility and independently verified certifications remain important open questions.
Current limits and realistic expectations
TADF is a mechanistic tool under investigation, not a standard operating principle shared by all organic solar cells. The strongest evidence currently consists of material-specific demonstrations in which TADF-like behavior is combined with favorable energy levels, transfer pathways or morphology. Those combinations are difficult to disentangle because changing an additive can simultaneously alter absorption, packing, domain formation, exciton lifetime and interfacial energetics.
The practical objective is not to maximize delayed fluorescence in isolation. A useful design must keep excitation losses low, deliver energy to a charge-separating interface, suppress geminate and nongeminate recombination, and preserve stable transport to the electrodes. A molecule that performs well in a photoluminescence experiment may fail in a device if it forms traps, disrupts percolation or increases voltage loss.

For that reason, the most defensible conclusion is narrow: thermally assisted RISC explains how triplet population can return to a radiatively accessible singlet, while photovoltaic researchers are testing whether that extra excited-state pathway can be coupled to energy transfer and charge generation. The reported 2022, 2024 and 2026 results show promising, architecture-specific examples, but they do not establish a universal TADF recipe or guarantee higher efficiency in an arbitrary organic solar cell.
