Yes—you can keep a theater company’s YouTube channel live around the clock with prerecorded performances. The reliable method is to run an encoder that sends a continuous YouTube Live feed from your performance files, advancing through a playlist or loop. What a 24/7 theater channel actually is

Prepare the YouTube channel
- Enable live streaming on the theater’s YouTube channel and complete any verification YouTube requests.
- Open Live Control Room and confirm that no live-stream restriction, strike or temporary hold is active.
- Plan stream keys before launch. YouTube documents up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key. Those limits are concurrent-stream limits, not a promise that every channel will receive the same feature access.
- Create a descriptive live-event title, description and thumbnail. Explain that the feed contains prerecorded theater performances so viewers are not misled into expecting a camera broadcast.
Clear every right in the recording
A theater’s license to perform a play in a venue does not automatically cover an online retransmission. Treat each recording as a rights package and obtain written permission for:

- performers, musicians, crew and any identifiable audience members whose contracts require consent;
- composed music, sound recordings, lyrics, choreography and synchronization;
- photographs, artwork, logos, projected media and third-party clips visible or audible in the production;
- online transmission territory, duration, platform, language and whether the recording may remain available as a replay;
- later excerpts, trailers, clips, Shorts or promotional edits.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can replace, interrupt or terminate a broadcast. Even when your theater has a license, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel so the automated system recognizes that permission. Keep contracts, cue sheets and correspondence together, and identify a staff member who can respond to a claim while the stream is running.
YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service apply to every live feed. Repetitive programming should still be accurately labeled, rights-cleared and useful to viewers; if the channel is monetized, review YouTube’s current reused-content requirements before assuming that a loop will qualify for advertising.
Build files that can run continuously
Standardize the masters
- Export each performance with a stable resolution, frame rate, audio layout and orientation. Avoid changing formats between items unless your encoder is configured to handle the transition.
- Use an opening slate that identifies the company, production, recording date and rights notice. Add a closing slate so a viewer can tell when a file has ended.
- Keep a high-quality master archive separate from the streaming copies. Store at least one local or offline backup and record the exact file version used in the playlist.
- Check dialogue, music and ambience with headphones. A technically connected stream can still fail for viewers if dialogue is too quiet or channels are swapped.
Design the schedule
Make a written playlist order before you upload anything. Decide whether a play repeats immediately, whether a trailer separates productions, and what should happen if one file is removed. A short test playlist is useful for launch; the production playlist should be versioned so staff know which order is live.

There is no universal “minimum” mini-PC specification. The machine must sustain encoding at the resolution and frame rate you choose, without thermal throttling, and the premises must provide dependable power and upload bandwidth. Test the exact files and settings you intend to use rather than relying on a processor name alone.
How to run the channel yourself on a mini PC
1. Install and isolate the encoder
Use a dedicated computer if possible. Connect it by Ethernet, place it where heat and accidental shutdowns are unlikely, disable sleep and configure the operating system not to restart for routine updates during a show. Restrict access to the stream key and keep the media folder separate from unrelated office files.

2. Create the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the event.
- Select encoder streaming and copy the server address and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password; regenerate it if it is exposed.
- Choose the latency and visibility settings appropriate for your audience. A 24/7 channel normally prioritizes stability over interactive delay.
- Confirm the title, description, thumbnail and playlist plan before starting the encoder.
3. Apply the encoder’s current YouTube settings
Use the current recommended settings shown by YouTube and your encoder rather than copying a stale preset. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the files you are sending; do not upscale a lower-resolution recording merely to claim a higher label. Select a stable, constant output mode supported by the encoder, keep audio and video muxed in the same stream, and use the keyframe interval and bitrate YouTube currently recommends for that resolution and frame rate.
If you use HLS ingestion instead of the encoder’s normal YouTube workflow, Google’s requirements include HTTPS transport, persistent connections, one encoded stream with muxed audio and video, and an ordered media playlist. HLS media segments are typically one to four seconds long. A malformed or constantly changing playlist can make the feed stall even when the source files play correctly.

- Point the encoder at the prepared playlist, not at a folder whose contents can change unexpectedly.
- Start the event as private or unlisted and watch the complete handoff from one file to the next.
- Check stream health, dropped frames, audio levels, synchronization, slate visibility and the YouTube preview.
- Make the event public only after the test has passed. Record the encoder profile, playlist version and start time in the runbook.
5. Test an overnight run
Leave the exact production chain running through at least one full overnight period. Watch for heat, disk errors, network renegotiation, an operating-system reboot, an encoder crash and playlist behavior at the longest file transition. Log when staff checked the stream and what they observed. A short successful test does not prove that a week-long broadcast will recover from every fault.
6. Prepare a restart procedure
Write down how to stop the encoder, relaunch the playlist, reconnect the stream key and verify that YouTube is receiving video and audio. Keep a spare copy of the encoder profile and a local copy of every streaming file. Assign an on-call person who can respond to a claim, power outage or network failure.

- Check the YouTube stream health panel, preview image, audio meters and dropped-frame indicator at defined intervals.
- Confirm that the current playlist item advances and that the next file starts with synchronized sound.
- Review copyright claims, policy notices and chat or viewer reports; do not wait for an audience member to discover a silent or blocked feed.
- Keep a contact list for the rights holder, channel administrator, internet provider and whoever controls the encoder or cloud account.
- After any interruption, verify the resulting YouTube replay and note the outage in the production log. Maintain the independent master archive regardless of replay availability.
Troubleshooting common failures

Rights, records and long-term operation
Keep a rights register that names each production, contributor, music cue, territory, permitted term and online use. Set calendar reminders for licenses that expire. Store the final contracts with the exact file hashes or version names used in the playlist so a claim can be answered quickly.
For long-running channels, separate editorial work from technical work. One person should approve the playlist and rights; another can monitor stream health and restart procedures. Review the schedule after premieres, cast changes or license renewals instead of allowing an old loop to run indefinitely.
The U.S. Copyright Office has stated that “the unauthorized retransmission of a stream simultaneously over the Internet to a user’s computer or other device infringes the public performance right, whether the stream is a retransmission of a live broadcast or a transmission of a performance of prerecorded material.” A 24/7 theater channel therefore needs both dependable engineering and documented permission to transmit what it plays.
