The WNBA’s eight playoff teams are seeded by regular-season record across the league, with no separate conference qualification. The 2026 format has three rounds: a best-of-three first round, best-of-five semifinals and best-of-seven Finals. The higher seed receives home-court advantage, but the home-game pattern differs by round.
Which teams make the WNBA playoffs, and how are they seeded?
The top eight teams in the league qualify, regardless of conference. The WNBA seeds them by regular-season record. The official rules cited here do not describe how ties in record are broken, so no tie-break procedure is included.

The fixed opening matchups are:
- No. 1 vs. No. 8
- No. 4 vs. No. 5
- No. 2 vs. No. 7
- No. 3 vs. No. 6
Winners advance within their half of the bracket to the semifinals; the two semifinal winners meet in the Finals. The WNBA has said teams are not reseeded after the first round, so the bracket path is set rather than redrawn based on which teams advance.

Home-court advantage belongs to the higher seed in each series. The sequence determines which team hosts each game if the series lasts that long; a series may end before its final scheduled game.

Starting in 2025, the first round changed from a 2-1 home pattern to 1-1-1, guaranteeing each team a home game in the series. The Finals expanded from best-of-five to best-of-seven, with a 2-2-1-1-1 home schedule. The WNBA announced both changes on October 10, 2024: 2025 season changes.

Older descriptions of a best-of-five Finals or a first-round schedule in which the higher seed hosted the first two games describe the pre-2025 format, not the current one. The 2026 postseason began September 27, according to the league’s FAQ; dates and live bracket results are specific to that season. Check the WNBA’s playoff page for results as the bracket progresses.
