F/A-XX and F-47 are not the same aircraft. They are separate sixth-generation fighter programs for different services and operating environments: F/A-XX is the U.S. Navy’s future carrier-air-wing fighter, while F-47 is the Air Force’s crewed air-dominance fighter inside its broader Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) family of systems. Both have Boeing development contracts, but that common contractor does not make them a joint aircraft program.
The essential difference
The Navy and Air Force are solving different operational problems. F/A-XX must serve from aircraft carriers and support a maritime air wing operating across long distances, especially in the Indo-Pacific. F-47 is intended to provide the Air Force with a new crewed air-dominance platform and to operate as part of NGAD’s network of crewed and uncrewed aircraft.

Why the Navy needs a different fighter
F/A-XX is built around the carrier air wing
F/A-XX is the Navy’s next carrier-based fighter. Its design requirements therefore begin with the carrier air wing rather than an Air Force land base. The aircraft must contribute to a force that deploys on ships, operates over maritime distances and integrates with the Navy’s existing and future carrier aviation systems.

That context affects more than where the aircraft is parked. A carrier fighter has to fit into the Navy’s launch, recovery, maintenance and deck-handling system while delivering useful combat reach from a moving base. The Navy’s publicly described need is tied to maritime operations and the distances involved in likely Pacific contingencies. Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Conn.) described F/A-XX after the contract award as a platform that “will serve as a critical platform for the Navy to overcome the tyranny of distance in the Indo-Pacific region.” That statement expresses the strategic purpose; it does not disclose a specific range or performance result.
F/A-XX will be part of a mixed naval force
The Navy expects F/A-XX to operate alongside the carrier-based F-35C and Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA). In practical terms, that means the program is not intended to replace every aircraft in the air wing with one new type. Instead, it is planned as a new crewed component that works with existing fifth-generation fighters and uncrewed teammates.
The Navy also intends F/A-XX to augment and eventually replace F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and EA-18G Growlers beginning in the 2030s, according to Pentagon information cited in October 2026 reporting. The Growler is the electronic-attack variant of the Super Hornet family, so the statement concerns both the Navy’s main carrier fighter force and its carrier-based electronic-warfare capability. It does not establish that F/A-XX will duplicate every Growler function in an identical configuration.

The F-47 is the Air Force’s crewed NGAD fighter
The Air Force selected F-47 as the crewed fighter element of its NGAD fighter effort and awarded Boeing an engineering and manufacturing development contract in March 2025. Congressional Research Service (CRS) describes NGAD as a family-of-systems program rather than a single aircraft purchase. The family includes the crewed F-47 and uncrewed, semiautonomous Collaborative Combat Aircraft.
That structure places the F-47 in a different command-and-control and force-design problem from F/A-XX. The Air Force is developing a crewed air-dominance aircraft that can team with uncrewed systems, share information and perform missions as one element of a larger combat architecture. The public description does not establish the exact number, configuration or autonomy level of the aircraft that will accompany each F-47.
F-47 is the planned successor to the F-22
The F-47 is intended to replace the Air Force’s F-22 Raptor. That is a direct replacement relationship, unlike F/A-XX’s planned transition from a mixed Super Hornet and Growler fleet. The F-47 program is therefore tied to the Air Force’s future air-superiority force, while F/A-XX is tied to the Navy’s future carrier-air-wing composition.

Are F/A-XX and F-47 the same plane?
No. They are separate service programs with separate requirements, acquisition decisions and operating settings. Boeing’s involvement in both programs is the main visible connection, but a shared contractor is not evidence of a shared airframe, common variant or joint program.

Senate Armed Services Committee language for the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act called for continued pursuit of F/A-XX, coordination with the Air Force and preservation of requirements specific to maritime operations. The committee also discussed whether the defense industrial base has enough capacity to support two advanced fighter programs. Coordination can reduce duplicated work or improve interoperability; it does not erase the Navy’s carrier requirements or turn the programs into one aircraft.
Acquisition status: two contracts at different times
F-47: engineering and manufacturing development
The Air Force announced Boeing’s F-47 engineering and manufacturing development award in March 2025. An EMD contract generally covers the detailed design, engineering, manufacturing development and test work needed before a production decision. The award does not mean that an operational fleet has been delivered or that the aircraft has completed flight testing.
CRS’s July 22, 2025 overview reported the Air Force’s FY2026 request of $2.58 billion for F-47 system development and demonstration. It also listed a $111.37 million FY2026 request for CCA. Those numbers were budget requests made for FY2026, not confirmations of final congressional appropriations or a statement of current-year spending.
F/A-XX: full-scale development
On October 7, 2026, Axios reported that the Pentagon had awarded Boeing the Navy’s F/A-XX full-scale development contract in September 2026. The report valued the contract at more than $20 billion and said it included multiple aircraft for ground and weapons-integration testing.

The reported amount is a development-contract value, not the total cost of buying, operating and sustaining the aircraft over its service life. Boeing did not disclose the number of test aircraft, delivery dates, planned variants or performance specifications such as range and payload. A full-scale development award also is not the same as a declaration that the aircraft has entered production or operational service.

Funding and industrial-capacity questions
The Navy program has faced budget and workforce concerns. A June 2025 Department of Defense briefing on the FY2026 defense budget said minimal F/A-XX development funding would preserve the option of leveraging F-47 work while avoiding an overload of qualified defense-industry engineers. That was the administration’s stated budget rationale. It does not show that F/A-XX and F-47 share an airframe, nor does it prove that engineering work can be transferred directly between them.
The Senate committee’s FY2026 report treated the issue as a capacity question: can industry support two sophisticated fighter efforts at the same time while each service retains its own requirements? The report’s call for coordination is a policy position, not an independent finding that industrial capacity is assured.
What is publicly known about performance
Public information is much more specific for the Air Force’s reported F-47 planning figures than for F/A-XX. CRS relayed figures from an Air Force fact sheet, but those numbers describe planned capabilities rather than results demonstrated by an operational aircraft.
| Figure | Program | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| More than 185 aircraft | F-47 | Planned buy quantity reported from an Air Force fact sheet |
| More than 1,000 nautical miles of combat radius | F-47 | Planned capability; not an independently verified operational result |
| Above Mach 2 | F-47 | Planned speed; not a published flight-test result |
| Range | F/A-XX | Not disclosed in the October 2026 report |
| Payload | F/A-XX | Not disclosed in the October 2026 report |
These figures cannot be used to declare one aircraft superior. The sources do not provide matching F/A-XX numbers, and a planned requirement is not the same as measured performance. Concept art and renderings likewise should not be read as authoritative evidence of an aircraft’s final shape, dimensions or capabilities.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the uncrewed aircraft fit into each program
Both services describe their future fighter forces as teams of crewed and uncrewed aircraft, but the program labels differ. For the Air Force, CCA is explicitly part of the NGAD family alongside F-47. For the Navy, F/A-XX is expected to operate with CCA and the F-35C as elements of the carrier air wing.
This common idea does not mean the Navy and Air Force will use identical uncrewed aircraft or identical software, sensors and mission packages. The public material establishes cooperation and teaming as goals, not a finalized cross-service inventory. The crewed aircraft still have to satisfy their parent service’s basing, mission and force-structure requirements.

Answers to the most common mix-ups
Which aircraft is replacing the Super Hornet?
F/A-XX is the Navy program intended to augment and eventually replace F/A-18E/F Super Hornets beginning in the 2030s. The same plan also addresses the Navy’s EA-18G Growler fleet. F-47 is not the Super Hornet replacement; it is intended to replace the Air Force F-22.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is F-47 replacing the F-22?
Yes. The F-47 is the Air Force’s planned successor to the F-22 within NGAD.
Why can’t the Navy simply buy the Air Force fighter?
The services have different basing and mission requirements. A carrier-air-wing aircraft must be designed around maritime operations and carrier deployment, while the F-47 is being developed for the Air Force’s land-based air-dominance force and its NGAD family of systems. Congress has encouraged coordination, but its language also says the Navy must preserve requirements specific to maritime operations.
Does Boeing’s role make the programs one project?
No. Boeing holds development contracts for both, but the awards were made by different services at different times and for different programs: F-47 EMD in March 2025 and F/A-XX full-scale development in September 2026, as reported in October.
When will either aircraft enter service?
The cited public sources do not provide confirmed service-entry dates for both programs. The Navy’s October 2026 contract report also did not disclose F/A-XX delivery dates.

What readers should not infer from current reporting
- Do not treat the reported F/A-XX contract value as a lifecycle-cost estimate.
- Do not compare the F/A-XX contract value directly with the F-47 budget request; they are different figures with different scopes and dates.
- Do not treat planned F-47 radius, speed or fleet size as independently demonstrated results.
- Do not infer F/A-XX range, payload, test-aircraft quantity or variants from artwork or speculation; those details were not disclosed in the cited October 2026 report.
- Do not assume that coordination between the services means a common airframe.
In short, F/A-XX is the Navy’s carrier-based answer to the future needs of its maritime air wing, replacing the Super Hornet and addressing the Growler transition. F-47 is the Air Force’s crewed air-dominance fighter and planned F-22 successor inside NGAD. Their Boeing connection and shared interest in uncrewed teaming are real, but they remain distinct programs shaped by different missions, bases and acquisition paths.
