The Steam Frame currently sold does not have a hot-swappable battery. Its rear strap contains a rechargeable 21.6 Wh lithium-ion battery that charges over USB-C at up to 45 W. You can detach the headset’s modular core from the strap, but Valve has not documented the launch battery as a user-removable pack that can be exchanged during use.
Valve is developing a separate replacement strap with hot-swappable batteries and premium Index-style off-ear audio. That accessory is not available at launch, and its battery capacity, connector, electrical protections, price and release date have not been published. Until those details arrive, USB-C charging or a suitable power bank is the practical way to extend a session.

What “hot-swappable” means for Steam Frame
A hot-swappable battery is designed to be removed and replaced without shutting down the device. In a headset, that normally means the computer, displays and tracking systems continue operating while a depleted battery module is exchanged for a charged one.
That is not how the launch Steam Frame is documented. Valve lists one 21.6 Wh rechargeable lithium-ion battery in the rear head strap. The battery balances the weight of the front-mounted core, but it is not described as a field-removable cartridge. Detaching the strap from the core is a modular hardware operation, not proof that the battery itself can be safely removed while the headset is powered.

How the current Steam Frame is arranged
The core module
The front core contains the computing hardware, storage, optical system and sensors. Because those parts are concentrated in a removable module, Valve can develop alternate straps without replacing the headset’s main electronics.
The rear strap
The current strap carries the 21.6 Wh battery, speakers and microSD slot. Positioning the battery behind the user’s head helps balance the mass of the front core. The strap connects to the core as a modular assembly, but the launch specification does not identify the battery as a separate pack intended for user exchange.
Charging specifications
Valve specifies USB-C charging at 15 V and 3.0 A, for a maximum input of 45 W. Steam Support estimates approximately 1.5 hours for a full recharge. Actual runtime and recharge behavior vary with settings and with whether the headset is being used standalone or streaming from another system.

What Valve has promised for the future strap
Valve software engineer Jeremy Selan described a future first-party accessory in a September 14, 2026 interview reported by PC Gamer:

“And in fact, you might say, ‘Hey, what is Valve going to do with this?’ We’re working on a future first-party accessory where it will plug in and replace the existing [strap]. That head strap will include a hot-swappable battery, and then premium Index-style off-ear audio.”
Valve hardware engineer Joy Lyons added:
“And so it’s a modular design. You just snap in, like Jeremy mentioned. That’s not available at launch, but it’s coming soon, and we’ll have pricing and details on that.”
Together, those statements establish the intended architecture: remove the original strap, snap on the future replacement strap, and use that strap’s battery modules as the replaceable power source. They do not establish the battery’s capacity, the connector design, charging circuitry, thermal or electrical protections, whether a module can be exchanged while the headset remains powered, or a shipping date.

Can you change the Steam Frame battery without shutting down?
For the currently sold headset, there is no documented procedure for doing so. The integrated battery should be treated as non-hot-swappable unless Valve publishes explicit instructions and a supported replacement part.

The future strap is explicitly described as having hot-swappable batteries, but “hot-swappable” still does not answer every operational question. Valve has not said whether the core remains powered throughout a module exchange, whether the strap contains a reserve cell or buffer capacitor, or whether the headset must be placed in a low-power state for part of the change. Until those details are published, do not assume that a battery can be pulled from a live headset simply because the accessory is called hot-swappable.
Current ways to extend a Steam Frame session
Use a 45 W USB-C charger
A USB-C power adapter capable of meeting the published 15 V, 3.0 A requirement is the most direct charging solution. A 45 W-capable charger matches Valve’s stated maximum input; a higher-wattage adapter can still be appropriate when it negotiates the headset’s supported output, but the headset will not charge above its 45 W maximum.
Use a sound USB-C cable rated for the charger’s output and connect it to the headset’s charging port. Charging speed can vary if the headset is actively rendering, streaming or running demanding settings, because some incoming power is used immediately rather than stored.

Use a USB-C power bank
A power bank can provide the same type of external USB-C power when its output meets the headset’s requirements. It is an external charger connected by cable, not a replacement for the integrated rear battery. The power bank’s capacity, output profile, cable quality and the headset’s current workload determine how much additional play time you receive.

Because Valve has not published universal power-bank compatibility testing, treat manufacturer output specifications as the baseline and avoid assuming that every USB-C battery will work. A unit that only offers low-power USB output may charge slowly, fail to charge while the headset is in use, or merely reduce the rate at which the internal battery drains.
Plan around the recharge estimate
Steam Support’s approximately 1.5-hour full-recharge estimate is a guide, not a guaranteed time for every session. It applies to a full recharge under the conditions Valve describes; temperature, battery state, active use and charger negotiation can change the result. If you need uninterrupted use, begin charging before the battery is empty and keep the cable routed so it cannot catch on furniture or peripherals.

What the modular design does—and does not—let you do
The detachable architecture has a clear benefit: Valve can change the strap without asking owners to replace the compute, storage, optics and sensors in the core. A strap can alter battery arrangement, speakers, fit or balance while the central headset remains the same.

A removable strap connection does not tell you that the lithium-ion cells inside the strap are safe to open, disconnect or replace. Doing so can expose high-current contacts, damage the charging system or create thermal and fire risks. Until Valve sells an approved battery module or provides a service procedure, the appropriate replacement path is an official accessory or authorized support rather than opening the strap.

SteamOS efficiency changes are not a larger battery
Official Steam Community release notes for SteamOS 0.4, dated October 8, 2026, describe up to a 12% improvement in battery lifetime. That is a firmware efficiency change: it can reduce energy use or improve how available charge is managed. It does not increase the physical 21.6 Wh capacity and does not turn the launch strap into a hot-swappable system.
The practical benefit depends on workload and settings, so the percentage should not be read as a guaranteed increase for every game, streaming session or display configuration. It also does not replace the need for an external charger during a long session.
What is still unknown about Valve’s hot-swap accessory
Valve’s comments confirm the concept but leave several purchase-critical details open:

- Valve has not said whether a battery can be exchanged while the headset is fully powered, or whether a brief sleep or shutdown is required.
- Weight, balance, comfort and the exact implementation of the off-ear audio are not published.
- There is no announced price, store listing or release date.
- Compatibility with future core revisions, replacement parts and warranty coverage has not been described.
These omissions matter because they determine whether the accessory is mainly a convenience upgrade, a way to extend all-day use, or both. A higher-capacity module could add weight; a lighter module could reduce runtime. Off-ear speakers may improve comfort for some users while changing how much space the strap occupies. Those trade-offs cannot be evaluated from the announcement alone.
How to choose a charging setup today
- Check the output rating. Prefer a USB-C charger or power bank that can provide the published 15 V at 3.0 A, up to 45 W.
- Use a suitable cable. The cable must be rated for the negotiated power; a low-rated or damaged cable can limit charging.
- Connect before the battery is critical. Charging while the headset is still operating gives the power-management system more margin than waiting for an empty battery.
- Watch the headset’s behavior. If the charge level continues to fall while connected, the source may not be delivering enough power for the current workload.
- Keep the battery and charger cool. Do not cover ventilation areas or place the power bank where heat cannot escape.
- Do not open the strap. A cable-connected power bank is the supported interim method; it is not evidence that the internal cells can be swapped safely.
Bottom line for buyers
The Steam Frame sold at launch has a rear integrated 21.6 Wh battery, not a user-removable hot-swap pack. Its modular strap is important because it gives Valve a place to introduce different hardware later, but separating the strap from the core is not the same as changing the battery during play.
Valve says a future first-party strap will add hot-swappable batteries and premium Index-style off-ear audio. Until Valve publishes its capacity, connector, powered-swap behavior, price and release date, plan on USB-C charging: a source capable of up to 45 W, including a suitably rated power bank, can extend use without modifying the headset.
