In India, a selfie is rarely just a record of a face. It can be a claim to visibility, a performance of belonging, a political image, workplace evidence or an identity credential. The same raised phone may document a pilgrimage, announce social aspiration, prove attendance or feed a facial-authentication system.
That makes the selfie a useful—though highly selective—window into contemporary India. People choose the frame, but families, communities, platforms, employers and institutions shape what can be shown and what happens afterward.

A country that is increasingly photographable
The material conditions for selfie-making are now widespread, without being equal. India’s 2025 Comprehensive Modular Survey: Telecom reported that 85.5% of households possessed at least one smartphone and 86.3% had internet access at home. Among people aged 15–29, mobile-phone use was approximately 97.1%; among young mobile-phone owners, smartphone ownership was about 95.5% in rural areas and 97.6% in urban areas. The survey defines use over the previous three months, and household possession does not establish that every person has a private device, reliable data, an account or control over an image.

These figures explain the selfie’s reach, not digital equality. A phone may be shared, controlled by a relative, used mainly for practical services or kept away from a woman or child when privacy is contested. Being online is different from being discoverable, and being able to take a picture is different from being safe enough to publish it.

What counts as a selfie?
A selfie is broader than a public Instagram portrait. It includes a front-camera self-portrait, a group photograph, a short video, a picture made for a family WhatsApp group, a political photo opportunity and a face image submitted to verify access to a service. Its meaning also comes from the caption, language, hashtag, location and intended audience.
An image sent to relatives, posted in a neighbourhood group or circulated through a workplace platform may never be public, yet it still performs identity. A devotional portrait, a photograph in festival dress or an image invoking the Constitution can say “this is who I am” and “this is where I belong” without seeking a mass audience.

The right to be seen
Mainstream media has historically given disproportionate visibility to urban, wealthy, famous and politically powerful people. The selfie lowers the technical barrier to publication. It lets a person place their own face, clothing, companions and surroundings into a digital archive and declare: I was here; I belong here; this event is part of my life.

That is not the same as equal media power. Platforms rank attention through popularity, money and opaque systems, so self-publication can still remain unseen. A self-produced image may also be interpreted through dominant assumptions about caste, class, gender, religion or respectability.
Urban aspiration
A young person photographing themselves in a mall, park, monument, café or transport hub may be documenting arrival in a modern city while also performing membership in it. Clothing, pose, phone model and backdrop communicate class and aspiration. Research discussed by Usha Raman examines young men from marginalised backgrounds using public self-portraits around Delhi parks and monuments to occupy space and fashion masculine identities; it is a lens on self-making, not a claim that every young man uses selfies in the same way. The wider analysis appears in Raman’s essay in Scroll.in.
Gendered agency and exposure
For women and girls, a selfie can create a controlled frame for experimenting with appearance, friendship, glamour and public presence. That agency can be real and reversible. Family members, partners, peers and strangers may police the image, harass its subject or redistribute it without consent. Access to a phone does not necessarily mean control of the device, account or archive, and the ability to post is not the same as the ability to do so safely.

Self-representation can challenge the invisibility of caste-marginalised people by reducing dependence on legacy media. It can also reproduce caste-coded ideas about beauty, occupation, respectability and status. Visibility is therefore a risk-bearing resource: being seen can bring recognition, abuse, retaliation or unwanted exposure. The important question is who gets to define what the image means.

Rural, regional and linguistic lives
Selfie practice is not an exclusively metropolitan phenomenon. People in villages and small towns make images at home, in local markets, at pilgrimage sites and during community events. Captions and hashtags may be in regional languages, and local influencers or political networks may determine circulation. Yet a household smartphone figure can conceal shared ownership, restricted privacy and differences in literacy, affordability and control.
Religion, ritual and family identity
Pilgrimage and temple selfies, festival portraits and family photographs position people within cultural identities. A devotional image shared in a family group is not identical to a public political post, but both place the subject within a story of belonging. Calling such images either pure sincerity or mere virtue signalling misses how personal, communal and political meanings can coexist.
From family circulation to political spectacle
Selfies work in two political directions. Individuals use them to signal affiliation, protest, citizenship or participation. Political organisations use the same visual language to manufacture proximity, national achievement and leader-centred identity.
Raman describes “3D selfie points” reportedly installed at railway stations and outside federal buildings in late 2023, featuring life-size images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. That account is best treated as an example from her essay rather than a blanket claim about every installation. The analytical question is sharper than the novelty of the display: when a format associated with individual agency becomes a state-sponsored photo opportunity, is the citizen using the political backdrop, or is the political system using the citizen’s desire to be photographed?
When the face becomes a credential
The selfie’s most consequential shift is from expressive image to identity instrument. A face can now function simultaneously as memory, social content and authentication. Raman uses DigiYatra as an example of travellers submitting a selfie for facial authentication against identity documents. The service’s current architecture, retention practices and safeguards can change, so those operational details should be checked against current official documentation rather than assumed from a general description.

The broader distinction remains important:
| Image type | Primary purpose | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary selfie | Expression or communication | The subject controls a frame, at least initially. |
| Platform selfie | Participation in a commercial service | The image may be copied, analysed or linked to account data under that service’s rules. |
| Verification selfie | Proof of identity or access | Convenience turns the face into a credential; consent may be formal rather than fully informed. |
| Public or institutional selfie | Staged political or organisational participation | The setting can attach an individual face to a leader, state or campaign. |
An ordinary photograph is not automatically biometric data. It becomes part of a biometric process when a system analyses facial features for identification or verification. That distinction matters as boundaries between photograph, identity document, platform data and credential become less visible to users.
Selfies under surveillance and platform control
Digital selfies can be copied, altered, scraped or redistributed. Depending on the service, they may carry location and time metadata, be analysed for facial features, or be linked to accounts, relationships and behaviour. These are possibilities created by networked systems, not proof that every image is actively watched.

The platform also controls reach. A person chooses a pose and caption, but ranking systems decide which audiences encounter them. The result is a recurring tension: the selfie expands personal expression while converting attention, identity and social connection into data and commercial value.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When taking a selfie is part of the job
The leisure selfie suggests voluntary self-presentation. In platform labour, the image can become compulsory evidence. Raman cites research on a gig worker required to upload a photograph showing himself gloved and masked so a platform could recognise him and enforce work or time discipline. In that setting, the image says less “this is how I choose to appear” than “I must prove that I am present, compliant and performing the required task.” The example belongs to the cited study and should not be generalized to every gig platform.

The dangerous frame
Selfie-related injuries and deaths are a genuine but limited part of the story. A peer-reviewed study of reported cases from March 2014 to April 2021 recorded 332 deaths globally, including 153 in India. Most victims in that dataset were male and young, and reported cases fell during COVID-19 restrictions, plausibly as travel and access to dangerous sites declined. These are media-reported research cases, not a complete official Indian mortality count; incidents may be missed or classified inconsistently. See the study in PMC.
Another scholarly critique warns that “killer selfie” coverage can become a moral panic, turning complex questions about infrastructure, tourism, platform virality and risk into stories of individual foolishness. That critique is available at SAGE. Danger should be understood as one edge case, not the defining meaning of Indian selfie culture.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

No selfie transparently represents India. It is curated, staged and shaped by the people and systems around it. The frame may hide those without devices, those unable to post safely, people whose images algorithms do not amplify and structural inequalities outside the chosen backdrop.
A small 2024 interview study of 20 Indian adults aged 18–24 found varied motivations and effects, but its purposive sample cannot establish a national psychological profile. Its value is thematic: selfie practices differ by age, gender, language, region, religion, caste, disability, audience and access to private space. The study is available at ScienceDirect.
The most accurate reading is therefore plural. A selfie can be mundane and socially revealing; private rather than public; empowering in one moment and exposing in the next; both an assertion of individuality and a declaration of group belonging.
