How the second-generation Honda NSX Type S compares with modern supercars

The second-generation Honda NSX is not a newly launched 2025 or 2026 supercar. Production ended in December 2022, with the NSX Type S serving as the final version. Its lasting point of difference is the way a twin-turbocharged V6, three electric motors, a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission and electrically assisted all-wheel drive were integrated into one mid-engine system.

That architecture makes the NSX a useful benchmark for modern supercars, but the available evidence does not support naming it an overall winner. A fair comparison requires the same model year, market, measurement method and test conditions. Honda’s published figures explain how the NSX works; they do not provide an apples-to-apples ranking against every current rival.

What “new Honda NSX” means now

Searches for a “2025 Honda NSX” can suggest that a new generation is on sale. Honda’s documented production history does not support that interpretation. This comparison concerns the second-generation NSX, introduced as a modern hybrid supercar and discontinued in December 2022. The NSX Type S was its final model.

Honda announced a worldwide run of 350 NSX Type S cars in 2021. That number describes the complete global allocation announced by Honda, not an annual production target or a guarantee that every market received the same number of cars.

The end of production changes the comparison immediately. A current supercar can be ordered as a new vehicle with an active factory warranty and present-day configuration support. A second-generation NSX is now a used-car proposition, and the condition, history and market of each individual example matter as much as the original specification.

The production timeline that matters

  • 2015: Honda’s technical material described the NSX powertrain and listed the V6 engine’s maximum output as 373 kW and maximum torque as 550 Nm.
  • 2016: Honda’s launch information described specialist maintenance support through designated NSX PERFORMANCE DEALER locations, with specialist equipment and Honda-recognized service engineers.
  • 2021: Honda announced the limited NSX Type S, with 350 cars planned worldwide.
  • December 2022: Honda announced the conclusion of second-generation NSX production.

How the NSX powertrain is different

The NSX is not simply a combustion supercar with a small electric assist motor. Its Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system uses three electric motors in addition to the rear power unit. Two motors drive the front wheels, while the rear assembly combines a twin-turbocharged V6, a direct-drive electric motor and a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The twin-turbo V6

Honda’s technical overview gives the V6 a maximum output of 373 kW and maximum torque of 550 Nm. Those are ratings for the engine component. They must not be presented as the complete hybrid system’s combined output, because the cited technical material does not establish a combined system figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction is important when comparing specifications. Modern hybrid supercars often publish several different numbers: engine output, motor output, system output, peak torque at one axle, or a temporary boost figure. A table that places the NSX’s engine rating beside another car’s system rating would create a misleading result even if both numbers used the same unit.

Three motors, two jobs

The two front electric motors provide electrically controlled all-wheel-drive torque distribution. They can apply drive torque at the front axle without a conventional mechanical propeller shaft connecting the engine to the front wheels. The rear direct-drive motor works with the V6 and transmission.

That layout gives the NSX two related capabilities: electric propulsion assistance and rapid management of torque between the axles. Honda presented this arrangement as part of a human-centered supercar concept, emphasizing response and handling. Those are Honda’s design claims, not independent test conclusions.

Nine-speed dual-clutch transmission

The nine-speed dual-clutch transmission is mounted in the rear power unit. A dual-clutch design can preselect the next gear and exchange ratios without the interruption associated with a traditional torque-converter automatic. In the NSX, the transmission is one element of a larger control system that also coordinates the rear motor, front motors and V6.

Consequently, “nine-speed” alone says little about how the car feels. A meaningful comparison should examine shift strategy, response in the selected drive mode, regenerative-braking calibration and how the control software blends engine and motor torque.

NSX versus a modern-supercar comparison framework

There is no single specification that decides which supercar is better. The following framework keeps the comparison technically honest when the other car’s verified data are available.

Comparison area What the NSX establishes What must be verified for the other car
Combustion engine Mid-mounted twin-turbo V6; Honda lists 373 kW and 550 Nm for the engine component. Engine layout, displacement, forced induction and whether its published figure is engine-only or system output.
Electric hardware Three motors: two at the front and one integrated with the rear power unit. Motor count, placement, battery role and whether motors propel the car, distribute torque, or both.
Drivetrain Electrically assisted all-wheel drive through the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD architecture. Rear-wheel drive, mechanical all-wheel drive or electrically controlled all-wheel drive.
Transmission Nine-speed dual-clutch transmission in the rear assembly. Transmission type, number of ratios and the conditions under which performance figures were recorded.
Performance evidence No sourced, independent comparison result is established here. Acceleration, top speed, braking and lap times measured under comparable conditions, or clearly labeled manufacturer claims.
Availability Second-generation production ended in December 2022; Type S production was announced at 350 cars worldwide. Whether the competing model is still produced, sold new in the relevant market and supported by an active factory network.
Ownership support Honda described specialist dealer locations and trained engineers at launch. Current service coverage, parts access, warranty terms and specialist requirements in the buyer’s country.

What can be said about performance

The NSX’s hardware explains why it belongs in a modern-supercar discussion, but hardware alone does not establish a ranking. The cited material does not provide matching acceleration, top-speed, lap-time, braking or weight figures for named current rivals. It also does not establish current prices, resale values, running costs or real-world fuel economy.

For a defensible performance comparison, use the same measurement convention throughout:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose a market and model year. A 2022 NSX Type S should be compared with vehicles that were current in the same period, not with an unspecified mixture of 2025 and earlier models.
  2. Separate manufacturer claims from independent instrumented tests. A factory acceleration claim and a magazine’s tested result answer different questions.
  3. Match units and test conditions. Temperature, surface, tire specification, fuel load, battery state of charge and rollout conventions can materially change an acceleration result.
  4. Identify whether a power figure is for the engine, an individual motor or the complete system.
  5. Report the source and conditions beside every number instead of presenting a single list of apparently equivalent specifications.

Without those controls, declaring that the NSX is faster, slower or superior overall would be speculation rather than comparison.

Driving concept and everyday usability

Honda described the second-generation NSX as a “human-centered supercar” and used the phrase “New Sports eXperience” in its August 3, 2021 release. These phrases explain the intended design philosophy: technology should make the car’s response and handling more accessible to the driver rather than exist only as a headline specification.

The front motors are particularly significant to that philosophy. They allow the control system to vary torque at the front axle electrically, while the rear motor and V6 provide the main rear power unit. In principle, this gives engineers more direct control over how the car responds to throttle and steering inputs than a rear-drive layout alone. Whether a driver prefers that response is subjective and depends on the drive mode, tires, road and driver.

Usability also includes the practical side of ownership. The NSX’s hybrid hardware, high-voltage systems, turbocharged engine and dual-clutch transmission require more specialized knowledge than a conventional sports car. Honda’s launch information therefore identified designated NSX PERFORMANCE DEALER locations, specialist equipment and Honda-recognized service engineers. That is evidence of the support model Honda specified at launch, not proof that every location remains active in every country today.

Why the Type S matters

The Type S is important for two reasons: it is the final version of the second-generation NSX, and Honda limited worldwide production to 350 cars. Those facts make it the reference point for discussions about the completed second-generation program.

The available material does not establish a complete, independently verified list of Type S performance changes, nor does it provide a Type S system-output figure that can be compared directly with the V6’s 373 kW and 550 Nm component ratings. Avoid treating the Type S allocation as evidence of a specific acceleration time, price premium or collector value.

For a buyer, the limited run is a production fact rather than a guaranteed investment thesis. Condition, mileage, accident history, battery and hybrid-system health, documentation and local parts support remain essential checks.

Where maintenance may be performed

Honda’s 2016 launch release said NSX maintenance was supported through designated NSX PERFORMANCE DEALER locations using specialist equipment and Honda-recognized service engineers. Before buying a used car, confirm which authorized or independent specialists can work on the high-voltage system, engine, transmission and software in your region.

What the available evidence does not provide

  • There is no verified current price list for used NSX examples in every market.
  • There is no sourced schedule of present-day running costs, fuel economy or battery-replacement pricing.
  • There is no basis for assuming that the launch-era dealer network has identical coverage in 2026.
  • Honda’s separate restoration announcement for first-generation NSX vehicles in Japan does not establish a restoration program for the second-generation car.

These gaps do not make the NSX impossible to own; they mean a prospective owner must obtain market-specific information from a qualified service provider and inspect the individual vehicle rather than rely on a generic online estimate.

How to compare the NSX with one specific modern supercar

A focused comparison is more useful than a broad “NSX versus everything” ranking. Use this sequence when evaluating a particular car:

  1. Fix the date and market. State the model year, country and whether the car is new or used.
  2. Map the powertrain. List the engine, motor count, motor locations, battery role and transmission.
  3. Normalize outputs. Label every figure as engine, motor or combined system output, and convert units consistently.
  4. Check the test source. Put factory claims and independent measurements in separate columns.
  5. Compare the ownership reality. Record service locations, specialist requirements, warranty status and parts availability.
  6. State what remains unknown. If one manufacturer has not published a comparable figure, write “not stated” instead of estimating it.

This method often produces a more useful answer than a single winner. One car may offer a more complex electrified drivetrain; another may deliver a different steering feel, lower service complexity or easier new-car support. Those are distinct trade-offs, not one universal score.

Common mistakes in NSX comparisons

Calling it a 2025 model

The second-generation NSX ended production in December 2022. Rumor pages and social posts are not evidence of a new 2025 or 2026 production generation.

Using the V6 figure as total system power

Honda’s 373 kW and 550 Nm figures describe the V6 engine component. They should not be labeled combined hybrid output.

Mixing generations

The first-generation NSX and second-generation NSX are different cars. Honda’s Japan restoration announcement concerns first-generation vehicles and does not establish service, restoration or availability facts for the second-generation hybrid.

Declaring a winner without matched tests

Acceleration, top speed, lap time, price and weight cannot be ranked responsibly when the sources use different conventions or when a comparable figure is missing.

Who the second-generation NSX makes sense for

The NSX is most compelling to someone who specifically wants its combination of a mid-mounted twin-turbo V6, three-motor hybrid architecture, nine-speed dual-clutch transmission and electrically managed all-wheel drive. The Type S adds the significance of being the final version and part of a 350-car worldwide allocation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is less suitable for a buyer whose priority is a factory-new car, a universally available dealer network, transparent current running-cost data or a simple naturally aspirated mechanical layout. Those priorities may point toward a different modern supercar, but choosing that alternative requires the same evidence-based comparison rather than an unsupported ranking.

The defensible conclusion is therefore specific: the second-generation NSX remains technically distinctive and historically important, especially as a three-motor hybrid supercar, but the available evidence cannot prove that it outperforms every modern competitor. Compare the exact cars, dates, markets and tests before drawing a broader verdict.
