Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart can move players between dimensions with near-instant speed because the PS5 combines its ultra-high-speed SSD with a custom I/O system that streams game assets quickly. Insomniac’s creative director has directly tied that combined architecture to the game’s dimension jumps; the available sources do not specify the exact data pipeline or timing for each transition.
What makes the dimension switches so fast?
The PS5’s SSD is one part of a broader storage and data-transfer design. Sony says the console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and integrated custom I/O system are intended to reduce loading barriers by getting assets into games quickly. That fast asset streaming can support seamless movement through worlds and near-instant fast travel.

Insomniac Creative Director Marcus Smith applied that explanation specifically to Rift Apart: “The SSD and custom I/O architecture around it allows us to send players across dimensions with near-instant speed. What is known—and what is not
Official sources describe the effect as seamless or near-instant, but they do not give a measured transition time, game-specific bandwidth figure, or a breakdown of which assets are loaded for each jump. Nor do they disclose the game’s transition-by-transition memory budget or compression format. Those details should not be inferred from the broad platform explanation.
Sony’s recommendation of 5,500 MB/s or faster sequential read speed applies to compatible optional M.2 expansion drives, not to a measured Rift Apart transition or a minimum speed needed to make the built-in feature work.

How the PC version differs
The 2023 PC port offers a separate example of how the game can stream assets on another platform, not proof of the PS5 version’s internal implementation. Developer Nixxes says the PC version uses DirectStorage 1.2, GPU decompression, and background streaming to load assets quickly. Nixxes also says that PC loading technology can work with HDDs, SATA SSDs, or NVMe SSDs, while recommending SSD storage for the signature experience. These are PC-port details and should not be attributed to the PS5 pipeline.

Do you need an extra SSD for dimension switching?
No. A compatible M.2 NVMe drive is an optional way to add PS5 storage capacity; it is not required to enable Rift Apart’s designed dimension transitions. Sony supports compatible M.2 expansion from 250 GB to 8 TB, requires effective heat dissipation, and does not support M.2 SATA SSDs. It recommends sequential read speeds of at least 5,500 MB/s, but cautions that an expansion drive may not match the internal SSD’s performance in every game, even if it meets that recommendation. Check Sony’s current M.2 SSD installation and compatibility guidance for drive, form-factor, and heatsink requirements before buying.
