When and where to expect road closures
Portland Police says significant closures begin along Naito Parkway at 7 a.m. The marathon starts and finishes at Salmon Street and Naito Parkway, and streets on the course cannot be driven on or crossed while runners are present. They reopen only after the last runner has passed and traffic-control devices have been removed. The race’s Downtown page says race streets are posted no-parking from 2 p.m. Saturday, October 3, until 2 p.m. Sunday, October 4. Bridge impacts
- Broadway Bridge: closed to vehicles from 7:15 to 9:45 a.m., according to Portland Police.
- Burnside Bridge: expected to remain open for most of the event, but there will be early restrictions and a brief full closure.
- Hawthorne and Sellwood bridges: temporary traffic restrictions are expected.
Because bridge impacts are not identical, check the official Portland Marathon neighborhood traffic maps for the area and time of your trip.
ODOT highway restrictions
ODOT lists the following closures and restriction for Sunday, October 4, from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The milepost ranges below are from ODOT’s notice; the OR 99E restriction limits vehicle width rather than closing the highway. ODOT Portland-area traffic notice

What to expect on MAX
TriMet says MAX Blue, Orange, Red and Yellow lines may experience delays between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m. on October 4 because of the marathon. This is a possible-delay advisory, not a prediction that every listed line will be delayed for the entire period. Check TriMet service alerts or TransitTracker for conditions close to departure. Plan a trip around the race
- For a drive: Check the marathon’s neighborhood traffic maps against your origin, destination and crossing point. Allow extra time or choose another route if it intersects a race street or affected bridge or highway.
- For MAX: Check the live service alerts or TransitTracker shortly before leaving, since the advisory describes possible delays rather than continuous disruption.
- For a street on the course: Do not plan to drive across or along it while runners are present. Access resumes after the final runner passes and traffic-control devices are removed.
The official notices do not provide a complete bus-route detour list or a single timetable covering every street closure. For a particular bus trip, check TriMet’s live service information; for street-by-street race impacts, use the marathon’s maps.
