MLB’s postseason has 12 teams: six in each league. The top two division winners in each league receive a bye to the Division Series; the other teams play a best-of-three Wild Card Series. The Division Series is best-of-five, so the first team to win three games advances.
How the MLB postseason bracket is seeded
Each league’s six-team field consists of three division winners and three Wild Cards. The division winners are seeded 1 through 3: the two with the best records are seeds 1 and 2 and skip the Wild Card round, while the third is seed 3. The three Wild Cards are seeds 4, 5 and 6, ordered by record among Wild Card qualifiers. MLB’s 2025 postseason explainer describes this structure.

How the Wild Card Series feeds into the Division Series
In each league, seed 3 plays seed 6, and seed 4 plays seed 5. Both matchups are best-of-three, and the higher seed hosts every game. The winner of the 3-vs.-6 series meets seed 2 in the Division Series; the winner of the 4-vs.-5 series meets seed 1.
The bracket is fixed after the Wild Card round. MLB does not reseed teams based on their results or records, so a lower-seeded Wild Card team does not get reassigned to a different opponent if it advances. The assignments are set by the original bracket.

What best-of-five means in the Division Series
A Division Series ends when a team wins three games. It can last three, four or five games; Game 5 is needed only if each team has won twice after four games. MLB’s current format FAQ describes the series as best-of-five in a 2-2-1 home pattern, with home-field advantage for the higher seed: the higher seed hosts Games 1 and 2, the lower seed hosts Games 3 and 4, and the higher seed hosts Game 5 if necessary. Where the Division Series winners go next
The two Division Series winners in each league advance to that league’s best-of-seven League Championship Series. The American League and National League champions then meet in the best-of-seven World Series. The later rounds are also described in MLB’s postseason format explainer.

How postseason extra innings differ
MLB’s regular-season automatic runner rule—placing a runner on second base to begin an extra inning—is not used in postseason games, according to the league’s format FAQ.
2026 Division Series dates
For the 2026 season, MLB’s announced schedule set all four Division Series to begin Saturday, October 3. Potential fifth games were scheduled for Friday, October 9, for the NLDS and Saturday, October 10, for the ALDS. MLB noted the schedule was subject to change, so those dates apply to the 2026 calendar rather than defining the postseason format. Check the MLB postseason hub for current schedule information.
