The five cartoons named in the original headline cannot be identified from the available information: no images, artists, outlets, dates, or captions are provided. Rather than invent what they depict, this article explains the real-world farm-cost story that headline points to. Research published in 2026 links conflict-related disruption in energy and fertilizer markets with higher U.S. farm input costs—but the burden varies by farm, timing, and crop, and higher costs do not automatically translate into equal losses or higher grocery prices.
Why the five cartoons cannot be described
A cartoon can be explained accurately only when the image or a reliable record of it is available. Here, the five works are not identified, so there is no sound basis to name their creators, describe their imagery, or claim they share a particular argument. The economic context below can clarify the headline’s subject, but it is not a substitute for the cartoons themselves.

How the conflict can raise farm costs
Fertilizer and energy
Nitrogen fertilizer production is energy intensive. Disruption affecting energy and fertilizer markets—including routes through the Strait of Hormuz—can therefore put upward pressure on fertilizer costs. Diesel is another channel: farms use it to operate equipment, and fuel prices also affect transport. These mechanisms help explain why a conflict far from U.S. fields can affect farm budgets; they do not establish that every price increase was caused solely by the conflict. Iowa State’s Center for Agricultural and Rural Development and University of Illinois farmdoc discuss these market links.

Farmdoc reported that Illinois farms buying fertilizer before February 2026 were relatively protected for that crop year, while farms that delayed purchases faced more exposure. It anticipated broader cost effects for the 2027 crop. The same analysis illustrates why a local price observation should not be mistaken for a nationwide farm bill:

| 28% nitrogen solution, Illinois | $436 per ton average, September 2025–February 2026 | $543 per ton on May 1, 2026 | Farmdoc reported a 25% increase for these comparison points; the figure is specific to this product and state. Source: University of Illinois farmdoc. |
Farms also differ in crop and input mix, purchase timing, and ability to adjust fertilizer use. A central Illinois quote, a national estimate, and a farmer’s individual expense answer different questions.
What the estimates say—and what they do not
A modeled corn-market scenario
An April 2026 brief from Iowa State’s Center for Agricultural and Rural Development described oil and fertilizer prices as having risen by nearly 50% in the weeks after the market reaction. Using USDA and futures price estimates from before and after the war, it modeled U.S. corn growers as facing $6 billion in lost revenue and $4 billion in additional costs, for an approximate $6 billion reduction in profits, or producer surplus. It also estimated about $13 billion in lost U.S. corn supply-chain sales, including about $10 billion in U.S. gross domestic product. These are conditional model results—not audited losses already realized by all farmers. Read the Iowa State brief.

Fuel costs versus crop prices
A later Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City analysis said diesel prices in late September 2026 were more than 75% higher than a year earlier. Using national cost-and-return estimates, fuel prices, and national average yields, it estimated about $0.11 more per bushel in corn fuel costs; corn prices had risen by more than $0.80 over the comparison period. That selected-crop, per-unit comparison concerns fuel, not total farm expenses or net farm income. The Fed’s finding suggests crop-price gains could more than cover the estimated added fuel cost for the crops it assessed, but it does not show that every farm’s overall costs were offset. See the Kansas City Fed analysis.

Purdue’s March 2026 brief describes possible adjustments in crop choice and fertilizer application, as well as crop-price responses, that could mitigate some profitability pressure. Those are possible responses, not proof that farmers recovered their added costs; changing application or crop mix can also have consequences for production. Purdue quoted StoneX analyst Josh Linville: “Literally, this could not happen at a worse time of the year.” Read Purdue’s brief.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do higher farm costs mean higher grocery prices?
Not in a direct, one-for-one way. Fertilizer expense at the farm is only a small share of supermarket costs, so a rise in fertilizer prices does not imply the same proportional rise in grocery prices. Fuel can affect transport and packaging through other channels, but the final effect depends on costs and pricing throughout the supply chain. The Associated Press quoted Iowa State agricultural economist Chad Hart: “However, the increased fertilizer prices shouldn’t significantly lead to grocery store increases even as they put a crimp in farmers’ profits.” The AP also quoted agricultural economist Carlos Villamil explaining that domestic fertilizer can still become more expensive when energy inputs cost more. These comments reflect reporting published March 18, 2026, early in the conflict period. Read the AP report.

How to read claims about farmers paying the price
- Check the date and place. A local fertilizer report or a late-September fuel comparison is a dated observation, not a current nationwide quote.
- Separate costs from profits. Added fertilizer or fuel expense is not by itself a calculation of net farm income; crop prices and production decisions matter too.
- Distinguish a model from an observed loss. The Iowa State corn figures are scenario estimates, not a tally of realized losses for every grower.
- Look for the crop and input measured. The Kansas City Fed’s per-bushel estimate addresses fuel costs for selected crops, not every farm expense.
- Do not infer a grocery-price increase from a farm-input increase alone. Farm expenses are only one part of food prices.
