Fast apps do not depend on one magic server. They rely on a chain of infrastructure: a content delivery network (CDN) can serve eligible cached content near you, while a load balancer directs requests that need application work to backend servers. That can shorten some trips and spread work, but it cannot make every request instant or eliminate the app’s origin.
What is a content delivery network (CDN)?
A CDN is a distributed network that can store copies of eligible content from an app’s origin—its source server or hosting environment—and deliver those copies from edge locations closer to users. The original content still lives at the origin; the CDN is an additional delivery layer, not a replacement for the host. Cloudflare’s CDN explainer describes this distinction, while Google Cloud’s overview explains how its edge network serves content.

What happens when you request a file
-
Your browser requests an object such as an image, stylesheet, or script. DNS and the CDN’s routing direct the request to an edge point of presence.

The edge checks whether it has a matching, eligible copy in its cache. The cache key and the service’s rules determine what counts as a match.

On a cache hit, the edge returns the object without asking the origin to process that request.
-
On a cache miss, the CDN fetches the object from the origin through its configured path, returns it to the user, and may store it for later requests if the response is cacheable. Amazon CloudFront documents that a regional edge cache may sit between a point of presence and the origin. AWS CloudFront request flow

What can be cached varies
Cacheability depends on the content and configuration, including cache rules, response headers, and cache keys. As a provider-specific example, Cloudflare says static files such as images, CSS, and JavaScript are cacheable by default on its service, while dynamic HTML is not cached by default; rules can change that behavior. Those defaults are not a universal rule for every CDN. Cloudflare’s default cache behavior

A cache hit can shorten the delivery path: the edge responds from its cache rather than requiring the origin to handle that request. That is most useful for content that is cacheable and already present at an edge serving the user. The benefit depends on factors such as the user’s location, routing, cache contents, and the object requested—not merely on whether a site uses a CDN.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
A miss still requires a fetch from the origin. So can requests for dynamic or personalized content that must be generated or checked for a particular user. Even when an app’s images and scripts come from a CDN, its account data, search results, or other application responses may still require backend processing. CloudFront’s documented request flow and Cloudflare’s cache behavior explain why CDN presence alone does not mean every screen or API response is served from an edge.
What is the difference between a CDN and a traditional web host?
A web host provides the environment where an app’s original files or application run. A CDN distributes eligible copies of content from that origin and delivers them through edge locations. They solve related but different parts of delivery: the host remains the source, while the CDN can handle suitable requests closer to users. A CDN may reduce origin work for cache hits, but it does not host every part of an application by default or remove the need for an origin.

What does a load balancer do?
A load balancer accepts incoming requests and selects among configured backend targets, such as application instances. For a request that cannot be answered from cache, the load balancer can direct the work to a backend target according to its type and configuration. AWS describes its role as routing incoming traffic to registered targets. How Elastic Load Balancing works

Health checks and routing are configuration-dependent
Load balancers can use health checks to assess whether registered targets are healthy and route traffic accordingly. Specific behavior depends on the load balancer and its settings. For example, AWS documents round robin as the default target-group algorithm for an Application Load Balancer; that does not make round robin the default for all load balancers. AWS also documents a fail-open case for its Application Load Balancer when every target in a target group is unhealthy, so it would be inaccurate to assume every system always avoids unhealthy targets.

How the layers work together
Consider a user opening a page. The CDN might return cached images and scripts from an edge. A request for personalized account information may need to go through to the origin, where a load balancer selects an application target. That target performs the required work and returns a response. Which requests follow each path depends on cache eligibility, rules, and the app’s design.
These functions can be combined in a larger architecture while remaining distinct: a CDN caches and delivers eligible content, a load balancer distributes backend requests, and a security layer applies traffic policies. Google Cloud’s reference architecture shows one such arrangement: global external Application Load Balancing routes HTTP(S) traffic among backend instances across regions, Cloud CDN serves eligible cached content, and Cloud Armor filters traffic. It is an example, not a required design for every app. Google Cloud’s scalable and resilient web application architecture
Why “instant” is an impression, not a guarantee
Fast-feeling apps make effective use of delivery and backend infrastructure, but each request still follows a path shaped by the content, cache state, routing, server work, and network conditions. A cache hit may avoid an origin trip; a miss, personalized request, or other dynamic operation may need one. A load balancer can distribute work among targets, but it does not remove the work itself. The result is that some parts of an app can arrive quickly while others take longer.
