How The Coalition reportedly used the Xbox Series S SSD to help Gears of War: E-Day run smoothly

Yes—with an important qualification. Video Games Chronicle reported on October 5, 2026, that The Coalition used the Xbox Series S’s internal SSD to store selected game data and move it into system RAM when needed for Gears of War: E-Day. The SSD did not become RAM, and the report does not describe a player-upgrade trick. It describes a developer-side way to manage limited memory.

What “SSD as makeshift RAM” means

RAM is fast working memory for data a game needs readily available. An SSD can store much more data, but it is slower to access. The reported technique used the Series S’s internal SSD as backing storage for selected game data, then moved that data into actual system RAM when the game needed it.

In its October 5, 2026 report of an interview with Digital Foundry, Video Games Chronicle (VGC) said the approach was used for detailed city data. The studio reportedly chose data that could tolerate being transferred into RAM without causing an unacceptable slowdown during play. This is a software and game-engine memory-management strategy—not a change to the console’s installed memory.

What the report says the technique achieved

VGC reports that the Xbox Series S has 10 GB of RAM, compared with 16 GB for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. According to the report, using a couple of gigabytes of SSD storage this way provided around one gigabyte of usable system memory. Those are figures attributed to VGC’s interview report, not the result of an independently verified benchmark.

The reported performance target came with a graphics trade-off: VGC says Lumen-based reflections were removed to maintain 60 frames per second on Series S. The account does not establish that the SSD technique alone delivered that frame rate; it was one part of adapting the game to the console.

VGC paraphrases The Coalition technical director Kate Rayner as saying the method helped the studio avoid substantially lowering game quality. The report does not provide a complete interview transcript, so that should be read as a paraphrase rather than an exact quotation.

Can an Xbox Series S owner add RAM with an SSD?

No. The account describes how the developer arranged game data, not a consumer-facing memory upgrade. It does not say that an external SSD or an expansion card can add RAM or reproduce the technique. Buying more storage gives a console more capacity for storing games and files; it does not increase the system RAM available to a game.

Whether a game can use storage as backing for selected data depends on how its developers build and manage it. The VGC report does not identify a player setting or hardware add-on that enables this approach.

How this fits with E-Day’s PC technology

In a July 14, 2026 article, Xbox Wire said E-Day was built with Unreal Engine 5 and DirectX 12 and described PC features including hardware ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, NVIDIA Reflex, AMD FSR, Unreal Engine TSR, Intel XeSS, and Advanced Shader Delivery on compatible hardware.

Those PC technologies are separate from the reported Series S memory strategy. Xbox Wire’s PC feature article does not independently confirm the SSD-backed technique, and the available reporting does not establish a full Series X-versus-Series S performance comparison for the game.
