How El Niño and climate change differ
El Niño is a natural climate pattern
El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), involving above-average sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific alongside changes in tropical winds, pressure, atmospheric circulation, and rainfall. Climate change is the long-term warming trend
Human-caused climate change results chiefly from greenhouse gases that trap heat, raising the global temperature baseline over time. It also affects the conditions in which seasonal rainfall and extreme weather occur. El Niño can temporarily redistribute heat through the tropical Pacific and atmosphere; climate change shifts the background conditions on which that natural variability operates. There is no established evidence that climate change caused this event. WMO says there is no evidence that climate change increases the frequency or intensity of El Niño events. The 2026 event is part of natural ENSO variability, occurring in a climate that is already warmer because of human influence. A study of unusual ocean conditions that might help an event develop does not by itself establish that greenhouse warming caused those conditions or the event. Can the two influences add to heat and other impacts?
Yes, their effects can overlap. El Niño typically has a warming influence on global climate, while human-caused warming raises the baseline. WMO says the combination of the powerful 2023–2024 El Niño and greenhouse-gas-driven climate change contributed to 2024 being the hottest year on record. That example shows how the influences can coincide; it does not mean climate change caused the El Niño.
Warming can also increase the energy and moisture available for some heatwaves and heavy rainfall associated with climate hazards, potentially amplifying impacts. This is not a rule that every El Niño effect becomes worse everywhere: outcomes depend on the hazard, location, season, and other climate patterns. What does “Super El Niño” mean in 2026?
“Super El Niño” is an informal label, not WMO’s operational strength category. WMO classifies events as weak, moderate, strong, or very strong. NOAA has also forecast the chance of reaching a particular historic-event threshold, but that criterion is not a universal definition of “super.” For clarity, “very strong El Niño” is more precise unless “super” is explicitly identified as informal wording.

In its diagnostic discussion dated 11 October 2026, NOAA said El Niño continued to strengthen and was likely to remain strong to very strong through January–March 2027. NOAA estimated the probability of a three-month relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) value of at least +2.5°C at 54% for September–November 2026, 83% for October–December, and 70% for November–January. These are forecast probabilities for a threshold, not observations of the event’s final strength. NOAA said that reaching this magnitude would make El Niño-consistent impacts more likely, not certain. NOAA’s ENSO Diagnostic Discussion is the operational source for the outlook.

A peer-reviewed study published by Tao Lian and coauthors on 30 April 2026 examined a rare tropical Pacific annular sea-surface warming pattern and equatorial upper-ocean heat content in spring 2026. In one full-ensemble coupled-model experiment, the simulated December peak had a mean Niño 3.4 index near 2.61°C. That is a model result, not a verified forecast outcome. The authors noted uncertainty from remote forcing and high-frequency atmospheric perturbations and cautioned that accurate prediction is difficult. Their analysis explores conditions that could influence this event’s evolution; it does not settle whether climate change alters ENSO frequency or intensity. What the 2026 seasonal outlook suggests for regions
WMO’s August–October 2026 outlook described a classic El Niño-like rainfall pattern, alongside above-normal temperatures across much of the world. It forecast an expected seasonal-average sea-surface temperature anomaly exceeding 2.9°C in key monitoring regions; that was a multi-model forecast value, not a confirmed observation. - Wetter than normal: the Greater Horn of Africa, parts of Central Asia, Southern Europe, western North America south of 45°N, and southeastern South America.
- Drier than normal: the Indian subcontinent, southern and eastern Australia, southern Central America and parts of the Caribbean, northwestern South America, and northern Europe.
These are seasonal probabilities, not deterministic forecasts for every place within a region. Local results can differ, and other drivers—including the Indian Ocean Dipole—also affect rainfall. El Niño’s impacts depend on event intensity, duration, season of development, and interactions with other climate patterns; extreme weather can also occur during ENSO-neutral conditions. How to interpret the outlook for where you live
A global ENSO headline cannot tell you whether a particular town will have a heatwave, drought, flood, or a specific amount of rain. Use your national meteorological service’s local and seasonal forecasts for location-specific guidance, and check them as conditions evolve. Treat ENSO outlooks as information about changing odds, not a guarantee of a particular local outcome.
