Testing helps teams build software faster when it gives developers quick, trustworthy feedback about a change. Automated checks can reveal a regression while the code is still fresh, reducing the work needed to find and fix it. The goal is not the most tests; it is useful feedback at the right time, alongside human testing and maintainable development practices.
How does testing help build better software?
A code change can affect behavior beyond the lines edited. Tests make those effects visible sooner: a developer commits a change, automated checks run, and a meaningful failure points to something that needs attention. This shortens the distance between making a change and learning whether it caused a problem.
When a defect is found soon after it is introduced, there is usually less intervening work to consider during diagnosis. A focused regression test can also help catch the same failure if it returns. Tests therefore support smaller corrections and give teams more confidence to change code—but a passing suite is evidence about the behaviors checked, not proof that software is correct or defect-free.
DORA describes fast feedback on the effects of changes across the delivery lifecycle as a central practice. Its 2021 report says organizations classified as elite performers meeting reliability targets were 3.7 times more likely to leverage continuous testing. That is an association reported among organizations in the study, not evidence that testing alone caused the difference. DORA’s 2021 Accelerate State of DevOps Report

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does testing slow down software development?
It can, if checks are slow, flaky, redundant, or expensive to maintain. Teams also spend time preparing test data and environments and diagnosing failures. But skipping useful checks can defer feedback until more code depends on the change, making a defect harder to isolate.
The practical aim is not maximum test count or coverage at any cost. It is a suite that catches meaningful problems reliably and quickly enough to inform decisions. DORA’s test automation guidance recommends that developers be able to get feedback from automated tests in less than ten minutes both on local workstations and from the continuous integration system. This is a recommended target, not a claim that every team currently achieves it. DORA test automation guidance

Keep the signal worth waiting for
- Prioritize fast checks that developers can run while integrating changes.
- Investigate flaky failures: unreliable signals teach people to distrust results and delay response.
- Review the suite for brittle, redundant, or costly checks whose value no longer justifies their upkeep.
- Measure feedback time and failure usefulness, not only the number of tests.
How can automated testing speed up development?
Continuous testing means checking software throughout delivery rather than postponing every check until development is declared complete. In a continuous integration workflow, commits trigger builds and automated checks. When an informative failure appears, developers can address it near the change that caused it. DORA’s guidance on continuous integration explains this practice as part of integrating work continuously.
- Make a small change. Keep changes understandable so that a failure has a manageable set of likely causes.
- Run repeatable checks locally and in CI. Use quick automated feedback during development and integration, rather than relying on a final test phase.
- Investigate meaningful failures promptly. Reproduce the issue, identify whether the change introduced it, then fix the cause or correct the test if its signal is wrong.
- Add a regression check when practical. If a test can reliably capture the defect, keep it as protection against recurrence.
- Use human testing for what scripts cannot judge. Make builds available for exploration and review behavior with user needs in mind.
Automation is especially useful for repeatable checks and regression feedback. It does not replace exploratory testing, usability testing, or acceptance testing, where people investigate unexpected behavior, assess whether an experience works for users, or determine whether needs have been met. DORA recommends combining automated and manual testing throughout delivery.

What tests should a development team automate?
Automate a check when it is repeatable, useful to run often, and produces a result that can be trusted. Keep human judgment in the loop when the question is open-ended or depends on user experience. Choose checks based on the feedback they provide, run frequency, reliability, maintenance cost, and whether they need human interpretation.
| Testing activity | Useful role for automation | Where human judgment matters |
|---|---|---|
| Repeatable checks on expected behavior | Run frequently during local development and CI to flag regressions. | Clarify expected behavior when requirements are ambiguous. |
| Regression checks for known defects | Preserve a reproducible check when it can reliably catch a previously found failure. | Confirm the fix addresses the real user or system problem. |
| Exploratory testing | Automation may assist with setup or repeated steps, but cannot substitute for open-ended investigation. | Probe unexpected paths and interpret behavior. |
| Usability and acceptance testing | Scripts can verify some specified conditions, but do not establish that an experience is usable or meets user needs. | Evaluate the experience and whether it satisfies users and stakeholders. |
For a testing tool or framework, evaluate fit with the team’s language and build pipeline, execution speed, reproducibility, integration effort, and maintenance burden. There is no universal tool choice established here; the useful choice is the one that gives the team dependable feedback in its context.

Why testing alone cannot guarantee delivery speed or quality
Testing is one contributor to a delivery system, not a standalone guarantee of speed, reliability, security, or business success. Its effects depend on how it fits with integration practices, team collaboration, architecture, and operational reliability. A test may miss defects when requirements are unclear or behavior is hard to observe; a clean run cannot prove the absence of failures or security issues. Keep builds available for exploratory work and developers and testers collaborating throughout delivery. DORA’s research on delivery capabilities also emphasizes that capabilities work in context and build on one another. DORA Research: 2022

If your checks need website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
