Quantum Hall measurements are controlled by three coupled variables: perpendicular magnetic field sets the Landau-level and filling-factor regime, temperature determines how sharply transport features are resolved, and disorder creates the localized and extended states that make integer-quantum-Hall (IQHE) plateaus possible. A reliable interpretation therefore needs both Hall resistance and longitudinal resistance, together with the material, device geometry, carrier density, field or filling factor, temperature, and disorder regime.

There is no universal rule that increasing disorder or temperature always widens or narrows a plateau. Experiments and models show regime-dependent behavior, including nonmonotonic disorder trends and geometry-specific reversals.

What a quantum Hall measurement actually records

In a conventional four-terminal measurement, the transverse voltage gives the Hall resistance, usually written Rxy, while the voltage measured along the current path gives the longitudinal resistance, Rxx. IQHE plateaus are identified from their joint behavior rather than from a flat Hall trace alone.

Observable What a plateau-center signal means What a transition looks like
Hall resistance, Rxy Approaches the nominal quantized value for the occupied integer filling factor. Changes toward the value associated with the next filling factor as the control parameter is swept.
Longitudinal resistance, Rxx Becomes very small, ideally approaching zero, when the chemical potential lies in localized states between extended Landau-level states. Shows a peak or critical-region structure as extended states carry transport during a plateau-to-plateau transition.

A GaAs device studied as a quantum Hall resistance standard was measured at constant field, current, and temperature, with averaging used to reduce random noise. Near plateau centers, its Hall resistance approached the nominal value while longitudinal resistance approached zero; these are device-specific observations, not a universal temperature threshold. How perpendicular magnetic field selects the quantum Hall regime

A field applied perpendicular to a two-dimensional electron system quantizes orbital motion into Landau levels. The filling factor, commonly expressed as ν = nh/(eB) for carrier density n, charge magnitude e, and field B, indicates how many quantized levels are occupied. Changing B at fixed density therefore moves the sample through different integer filling factors. Changing density at fixed B can produce the same type of filling-factor sweep.

Field sweeps and plateau transitions

As the field is swept, the chemical potential moves relative to Landau levels. Extended states near a transition energy allow dissipation and produce a longitudinal-resistance feature; localized states away from those energies support a finite field interval over which the Hall resistance remains near a quantized value. The transition field is not a material-independent constant: it depends on carrier density, sample design, mobility, spin splitting, and the particular transition being studied.

A 2023 study of a GaAs two-dimensional electron gas reported a temperature-independent critical field in its measured longitudinal resistance near a plateau transition. The same body of work reports scaling for spin-split transitions in AlGaAs heterostructures, including κ = 0.42 ± 0.01 for the specified alloy-disorder concentrations. That exponent and critical-field behavior belong to those samples and transitions, not to every quantum Hall device. The study is summarized at Physica B: Condensed Matter.

Why field must be reported with density or filling factor

Quoting a field without carrier density can make two nominally similar measurements impossible to compare. The same magnetic field can correspond to different ν in samples with different densities. A useful report gives the field range, density or gate setting, the filling factor, sweep direction and rate when relevant, and whether the feature is a Hall plateau, a longitudinal minimum, or a transition width.

What temperature changes

Finite temperature affects both the electronic distribution and the ability of a measurement to resolve narrow energy gaps and localized-state regions. As temperature rises, thermal occupation can activate carriers across otherwise insulating regions and smooth sharp structures. In practice, Hall plateaus can become less flat and longitudinal minima less deep, but the temperature at which this becomes important depends on the energy gaps, disorder broadening, contacts, measurement current, and device geometry.

Temperature is not a single universal cutoff

The available experiments do not establish one temperature above which IQHE quantization fails. A historical InGaAs-InP experiment measured temperature-dependent quantized Hall behavior from 4.2 to 50 K in the i = 2 plateau region and inferred a significant density of localized states between Landau levels. That 4.2–50 K interval describes the reported experiment; it is not a general operating range for all materials or filling factors. See Temperature dependence of the quantized Hall effect.

For precision work, temperature stability matters as much as the nominal set point. The GaAs resistance-standard measurements held field, current, and temperature constant and averaged repeated readings to suppress random noise. A drifting thermometer, self-heating from excess current, or a temperature gradient can mimic a change in plateau quality.

How to distinguish thermal smearing from other problems

  • Repeat the field sweep at several stabilized temperatures while keeping current and sweep protocol fixed.
  • Check whether the Hall plateau and longitudinal minimum degrade together. A temperature-driven loss of resolution often affects both traces.
  • Reduce excitation current to test for Joule heating; if the feature improves, the electron temperature may exceed the thermometer reading.
  • Record the actual sample temperature, not only the cryostat set point.

Why disorder can create robust plateaus

Disorder is not merely an imperfection in IQHE physics. In the standard localization picture, random potential fluctuations broaden Landau levels and localize states away from the critical energies. Localized states do not carry current across the sample in the same way as extended states, allowing the chemical potential to move through a finite energy or field interval while Rxy remains quantized and Rxx remains small. Plateau-to-plateau transitions are therefore disorder-induced localization–delocalization transitions in the scaling description reviewed by Bodo Huckestein in Reviews of Modern Physics.

More disorder does not have one guaranteed effect

It is tempting to say that extra disorder either broadens plateaus by creating more localized states or narrows them by destroying coherence. Neither statement is universally correct. The outcome depends on disorder strength, correlation length, type of disorder, Landau-level broadening, temperature, and the filling-factor regime being measured.

A 2025 theory study explicitly finds an intricate temperature–disorder interplay and nonmonotonic plateau-width behavior as disorder increases. In other words, a plateau can widen over one disorder range and narrow over another, with temperature changing where that turnover occurs. The authors describe the central result as an intrinsic connection between disorder and temperature in IQHE. Their model analysis should not be converted into a universal experimental law. Read the article at Physical Review B.

How temperature and disorder interact

Temperature and disorder act on the same energy landscape. Disorder determines the distribution and localization of states around each Landau level; temperature determines how broadly carriers sample that landscape. At low temperature, a larger localized-state interval may support a wide plateau. At higher temperature, thermally activated carriers can access states that were effectively inert, reducing the depth of the longitudinal minimum or shifting the apparent transition.

Because these effects are coupled, comparing plateau widths requires a defined width convention. State whether width means field span between specified Rxx thresholds, the interval over which Rxy stays within a stated tolerance, or an energy/filling-factor span extracted from a model. Also state the temperature and disorder parameter used. A width measured at one temperature cannot be assigned solely to disorder without controlling thermal broadening.

Geometry can reverse disorder’s apparent role

Device geometry and edge-state connectivity matter especially in mesoscopic structures. In a graphene p–n junction in the quantum Hall regime, chiral edge states meet at the junction, and the longitudinal resistances measured at the top and bottom edges are not generally equal. The imbalance reflects which edge channels participate in transport and mixing.

Unipolar graphene junctions

In the unipolar regime, both sides of the junction have carrier types of the same sign. The cited theoretical study found that disorder can destroy plateaus in this regime. This is a specific result for the modeled graphene junction and its edge configuration, not a statement that disorder destroys every IQHE plateau.

Bipolar graphene junctions

In the bipolar regime, one side is electron-like and the other hole-like. The same study found that disorder can reduce a large resistance and lead to plateau formation through mixing of counter-propagating edge states. Junction length changes which edge states have time to mix, so two devices made from the same material can show different disorder trends. Details are reported in Effect of disorder on longitudinal resistance of a graphene p–n junction in the quantum Hall regime.

What a careful comparison should include

When comparing papers, wafers, or cooldowns, put the following variables beside every claimed trend:

  • Material and carrier system: for example, a GaAs two-dimensional electron gas, an InGaAs-InP heterostructure, or graphene.
  • Geometry: Hall-bar dimensions, junction length, edge configuration, contacts, and any p–n interface.
  • Temperature: stabilized sample or electron temperature, range, and whether self-heating was checked.
  • Magnetic field and filling factor: field range, carrier density or gate setting, and the integer transition or plateau studied.
  • Disorder: alloy composition, intentional scatterers, inferred broadening, correlation length, or another defined disorder parameter.
  • Observable and definition: Rxy, Rxx, conductivity, or a transition/plateau width with its numerical criterion.
  • Evidence type: measured data, numerical model, scaling fit, or an inference from another observable.

Without these details, phrases such as “disorder broadens the plateau” are too broad to be portable between systems.

A practical measurement workflow

  1. Characterize the device at low field. Measure carrier density, mobility, contact resistance, and gate dependence before interpreting quantum Hall features.
  2. Choose a controlled sweep. Fix the current, temperature, and field-sweep protocol. Record both sweep directions if hysteresis or charge rearrangement is possible.
  3. Acquire Rxy and Rxx simultaneously. A flat Hall trace without a corresponding longitudinal minimum can indicate contact mixing, leakage, or an incorrectly assigned plateau.
  4. Map field to filling factor. Use the measured density rather than assuming a nominal value, and label every feature by ν as well as B.
  5. Repeat over temperature. Keep the excitation low enough to avoid electron heating, wait for stabilization, and log the sample temperature for each trace.
  6. Vary disorder only with a defined control. Examples include gate-tuned inhomogeneity, alloy concentration in a heterostructure, or a modeled disorder amplitude. Do not infer a disorder trend from unrelated devices with different densities and geometries.
  7. Define the width before fitting. Specify the resistance tolerance or threshold used to mark plateau edges, then apply it consistently across temperatures and disorder settings.
  8. Check reproducibility. Repeat the measurement after thermal cycling or gate changes when relevant, and separate random noise from systematic contact or calibration errors.

Common interpretation failures and fixes

Failure Why it misleads Better practice
Calling every flat Hall segment a robust plateau Contact misalignment or a noisy, unresolved trace can appear flat. Require the corresponding low Rxx and report the measurement uncertainty.
Comparing field widths from samples with different densities The same field interval represents different filling-factor intervals. Compare in ν or provide density and field together.
Assigning a width change solely to disorder Temperature, current heating, and geometry can change at the same time. Hold temperature and excitation fixed and document the disorder parameter.
Generalizing a graphene p–n result to a conventional Hall bar Edge-state mixing and junction length are specific to that geometry. Keep conclusions tied to the device regime in which they were obtained.
Treating a model prediction as an experimental law Model parameters may not map directly onto a fabricated sample. Label results as measured, simulated, or inferred and state the model’s regime.

Is disorder always necessary?

The usual IQHE explanation relies on disorder-induced localization to produce a finite field interval of quantized Hall conductance. A 2021 study, however, discusses a possible plateau in a disorder-free system arising from spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry. This is an exception tied to the regime studied, not a replacement for the localization framework used to interpret ordinary integer-effect measurements. See The quantum Hall effect in the absence of disorder.

How to report a result so others can reproduce it

A complete statement might read: “The ν = 2 feature in a GaAs Hall bar was measured at a specified carrier density and perpendicular field, with the sample stabilized at a stated temperature and driven at a stated current; Rxy remained within a defined tolerance while Rxx stayed below a defined threshold.” Add the device geometry, disorder description, sweep protocol, averaging method, and uncertainty. For a temperature or disorder study, list every condition used to define the plotted width.

This level of reporting prevents a result from one GaAs resistance standard, InGaAs-InP wafer, or graphene junction from being mistaken for a universal rule. The central diagnostic is always the same: interpret Hall and longitudinal signals together, identify the field or filling-factor regime, and treat temperature, disorder, and geometry as coupled variables.
