Technology can help manufacturers and energy providers see problems sooner, coordinate complex operations and expand access to services—but those gains depend on reliable infrastructure, skilled workers, responsible deployment and access to critical materials. World Economic Forum (WEF) reporting offers a framework for connecting these issues. The available material does not verify an event or session with the exact title “Technology As Power to Empower, Renewable Growth, and Global Supply Chains at Economic Forum,” so this is a thematic analysis, not a recap of a confirmed panel.

How can technology support renewable growth and more resilient supply chains?

Digital tools can improve the information available to people making decisions across manufacturing and energy systems. Better visibility can help organizations coordinate production, identify disruptions and adjust operations. In energy projects, technology can support planning and operations; across supply chains, it can help decision-makers understand dependencies and respond when conditions change. These are potential mechanisms, not guaranteed outcomes: benefits depend on the quality of implementation, infrastructure, skills and governance.

The WEF’s Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains organizes its work around four connected priorities:

  • Resilient value chains: understanding dependencies and improving the capacity to adapt to disruption.
  • Technology and innovation: adopting tools that can change industrial operations and production.
  • People-centric transformation: preparing workers and considering who can participate in, and benefit from, change.
  • Sustainable systems: connecting industrial decisions to environmental outcomes.

The value of this framework is that it does not treat technology adoption as an end in itself. A more visible supply chain may still rely on concentrated sources of materials; a more automated factory may still lack workers with the necessary skills; and a renewable project may have environmental or community impacts that need to be addressed.

What changes when manufacturing and energy systems go digital?

Operations and supply-chain decisions

Digital systems can help organizations collect and use information about operations and dependencies. That may support faster coordination, but resilience is not the same as digitization: organizations also need to understand where critical inputs come from and how they would respond to disruption. The WEF’s 2024–2025 annual report describes the launch of Beyond Cost: Country Readiness for the Future of Manufacturing and Supply Chains, which includes a Global Readiness Index intended to inform decisions about value chains and production footprints. It is a decision-support initiative, not proof that any particular footprint is resilient.

The WEF also reported that 36 sites joined its Global Lighthouse Network during the 2024–2025 reporting period, bringing the network total to 189. This is the Forum’s count of sites in its network; it should not be read as a census of advanced manufacturing worldwide or as evidence that every factory can reproduce the same results.

Energy deployment and environmental costs

Digital infrastructure itself uses energy and materials, and devices have environmental impacts over their life cycles. The Internet Governance Forum’s IGF 2023 Reports archive discusses digitalization’s environmental effects, including device impacts, energy use and sustainable manufacturing. It also cites a figure of 730 million tonnes of CO₂, or 1.4% of global emissions, attributing it to an Ericsson report. That figure is a secondary attribution on the IGF page; the underlying Ericsson publication is not independently verified here, so it should not be treated as a fresh measurement or as a figure independently established by the IGF.

Renewable infrastructure also depends on materials and project decisions. The WEF annual report describes Five Principles for Responsible Deployment of Renewables Infrastructure, developed by public-private leaders to guide projects toward benefits for people and the planet. Those principles state an intended direction; their existence does not establish that every project delivers those benefits. The European Commission’s 2023 document C(2023) 2178 likewise identifies strategic dependencies in critical raw materials and digital technologies as concerns for the EU’s green and digital transitions. Together, these points make access, environmental effects and supply security part of the technology conversation—not issues that can be left until after deployment.

Who gains access to the benefits, and what happens to workers?

Technology is empowering only when people can access the infrastructure and skills needed to use it and when the resulting changes create meaningful opportunity. The WEF’s 2024–2025 annual report says its EDISON Alliance connected more than one billion people in over 100 countries to essential digital services in healthcare, education and finance. This is the Forum’s reported initiative reach across those service areas; it is not a measure of the quality of access or of individual outcomes.

Workforce preparation is another part of industrial change. The same WEF report says an Industry 4.0 career-path initiative was announced to address a projected shortfall of two million workers in US manufacturing. That number is a projection reported by the Forum, not a current count of vacancies. The report also says the Reskilling Revolution had “reached” over 750 million people as of June 2025. “Reached” is the initiative’s reported measure; it should not be equated with independently verified job placements or durable employment outcomes.

These figures point to distinct questions for employers and policymakers: which skills are needed, who can access training, whether new roles offer good work, and how workers can adapt as production changes. A headline figure for people reached or for projected labor needs cannot answer those questions on its own.

How should governments and businesses weigh innovation against dependency?

A useful evaluation starts with five tests. They are an editorial framework for examining trade-offs, not a ranking published by the WEF, IGF or European Commission.

  • Resilience: Can decision-makers see important supply dependencies and respond to disruption?
  • Energy and climate: Does deployment support clean-energy growth while accounting for the energy and materials used by the technology itself?
  • Access and inclusion: Who can use the infrastructure and services, and who is left out?
  • Workforce: Are training, job quality and projected labor needs addressed alongside equipment and software adoption?
  • Governance: Are impacts and dependencies transparent, and are responsibilities for managing them clear?

This approach avoids treating digital adoption, renewable construction or supply-chain redesign as isolated projects. It asks whether the systems work together and whether people and environmental costs are included in the decisions.

What does the Economic Forum connection establish?

The WEF annual report describes the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains as bringing together business, government, academia and civil society. Its reported work spans technology adoption, resilient value chains, workforce transformation and sustainable systems. The report also covers Forum initiatives on clean power, industrial decarbonization, renewable infrastructure and critical minerals for the energy transition.

However, the available information does not establish an official agenda, date, venue or speaker roster for an event matching the exact title in this article. It would therefore be misleading to attribute specific remarks or conclusions to an unidentified panel. WEF Managing Director Kiva Allgood described the centre’s purpose as driving “actionable solutions” and examining the “how,” not just the “why,” of responsible industry transformation amid geopolitical uncertainty. That statement describes the centre’s stated purpose; it is not evidence that its initiatives have achieved every intended outcome.
