Tailscale separates three jobs that are often mistaken for one: an identity provider authenticates the user, each device proves its own identity with locally held cryptographic keys, and a control plane coordinates policy and connectivity. The data plane then carries packets between approved devices, normally over a direct encrypted connection.
That separation answers the common privacy questions. The coordination service is not the normal path for application traffic. If a direct path cannot be established, a DERP relay may forward the packets, but the payload remains WireGuard-encrypted. A subnet router and an exit node are also different: one exposes selected private networks, while the other carries a client’s general internet traffic through a chosen tailnet device.

User identity and device identity are different
Tailscale’s model begins with an identity provider rather than a Tailscale-owned password system. A native or custom OpenID Connect (OIDC) provider authenticates the person or workload. Tailscale then associates that authenticated entity with a particular tailnet and device. The distinction is important: signing in establishes who authenticated; node identity establishes which cryptographic device is participating.
The official identity explanation describes this relationship in detail: Tailscale identity. A user account by itself does not grant unrestricted access. Tailnet policy determines which peers, routes, and services that authenticated device may use.

What the device keys do
Each node has machine and node key pairs. The private portions stay on the device; they are not uploaded to the control plane. Public keys can be distributed to other nodes when policy permits communication. A peer uses those keys to verify the other endpoint and establish the cryptographic session used for data transfer.
This creates two checks before traffic is useful:
- The identity provider and tailnet membership establish the authenticated principal.
- The node’s local keys establish that a specific enrolled device is the endpoint making the connection.
Revoking a device, changing policy, or removing a user therefore affects authorization without requiring the private key to be copied to a central server.
The control plane coordinates; the data plane carries packets
Tailscale documents two complementary planes. The control plane handles device discovery, connection coordination, public-key distribution, network configuration, and policy distribution. The data plane runs on the participating devices and performs packet encryption, decryption, forwarding, and connection-health work. See the architecture overview in Control and data planes.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The coordination server therefore is not the ordinary route for your application payload. It tells nodes how to find one another and what they are allowed to do; the nodes exchange the traffic. This is why the answer to “Does Tailscale route everything through its servers?” is not a simple yes or no. Coordination is centralized, while packet transport is normally peer-to-peer or uses a relay only when necessary.
What the control plane can change
Because the control plane distributes configuration and policy, it can affect whether a connection is authorized, which public keys a node learns, and which advertised routes are accepted. Those decisions shape the data-plane path, but they do not turn the coordination service into a decryption endpoint for WireGuard payloads.

How a connection is established
A typical connection follows this sequence, although the final path depends on network conditions and policy:
- Authentication: The user or workload signs in through the configured OIDC identity provider.
- Enrollment: Tailscale associates the authenticated principal with the device and its tailnet membership.
- Key exchange information: The control plane distributes the public keys and permitted network configuration needed for authorized peers.
- Path discovery: The nodes attempt to establish a direct path. DERP can assist with coordination while that path is being negotiated.
- Encrypted transport: The data plane sends packets using WireGuard. If a direct path is unavailable, a DERP relay can forward the already-encrypted packets.
At every stage, authorization remains policy-dependent. Discovery does not automatically mean reachability, and being in the same tailnet does not imply that every device can communicate with every other device.
WireGuard protects the data plane
Tailscale uses WireGuard as its primary data-plane mechanism. Nodes authenticate peers with their key material and derive a symmetric session key for encrypting and decrypting exchanged packets. The encryption description is in Tailscale encryption.
Encryption applies whether packets take a direct route or pass through a relay. The endpoint devices perform the cryptographic operations; an intermediate forwarding service does not receive the node private keys needed to decrypt the WireGuard payload.
Direct connections are preferred
When network conditions allow, two nodes communicate directly. This generally avoids sending the payload through an intermediary and lets the endpoints handle the packet path themselves. The control plane still supplied discovery and policy information, but it is not carrying the application stream.

What a DERP relay does
DERP is Tailscale’s relay system. It can help coordinate setup and can forward traffic when direct connectivity, or an available peer-relay path, fails. The DERP server documentation describes this fallback role.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn relay mode, DERP sees packets that are already WireGuard-encrypted and forwards them to the other endpoint. Tailscale states that device private keys remain on the devices, so DERP cannot decrypt the relayed WireGuard payload. That is a narrower and more accurate claim than saying a relay sees nothing: forwarding infrastructure can still be involved in connection metadata and endpoint addressing, while the protected payload remains unreadable to the relay.
Can Tailscale see your traffic?
For the WireGuard payload itself, the documented design prevents the control plane or DERP from decrypting traffic because the private keys stay on the nodes and encryption occurs between endpoints. A DERP relay can carry the encrypted packets when needed, but it is not the endpoint that decrypts them.
This does not mean every piece of information is invisible to every component. Connection setup requires coordination, and forwarding requires enough addressing and state to deliver packets. The official claims are specifically about the encrypted WireGuard payload and the location of private keys; they should not be expanded into an assertion that no metadata, timing, endpoint information, or operational records can exist anywhere.
Subnet routers and exit nodes solve different problems
Both features extend traffic beyond a device-to-device connection, but they target different destinations and require separate authorization.

| Feature | Traffic it carries | Typical purpose | Required controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subnet router | Routes advertised private-network prefixes | Reach a printer, server, or other resource on a network where installing Tailscale on every endpoint is impractical | Route advertisement, administrative approval where required, and tailnet policy |
| Exit node | The client’s non-Tailscale internet traffic, by default | Send general internet-bound traffic through a selected tailnet device | Device advertisement, administrator or auto-approver permission, client opt-in, and policy permitting autogroup:internet |
The distinction is operationally important. A subnet router is selective: it makes named private routes available. An exit node is broad: it becomes the egress point for the client’s ordinary internet traffic unless routing rules exclude particular destinations.
Using a subnet router
A subnet router is useful when only some devices run Tailscale. For example, a laptop can reach a printer or internal server on a protected LAN through a device that advertises that LAN’s route.
- Choose a tailnet device that can reach the target private network.
- Configure that device to advertise the relevant private-network route.
- In the Tailscale web interface, have an administrator review and approve the advertised route when approval is required.
- Use tailnet policy to permit the intended users or devices to reach that route.
- Connect from the client; only traffic matching the approved private prefix uses the subnet router.
Devices on the destination LAN do not need their own Tailscale installation for this model, because the subnet router forwards traffic between the tailnet and that private network. The available route and its consumers remain constrained by policy.
Using an exit node
An exit node is selected by a client when it wants another tailnet device to carry its non-Tailscale internet traffic. The selected device must first advertise itself as an exit node. An administrator, or a configured auto-approver, must permit that use, and policy must allow access through autogroup:internet.

- Approve the advertisement in the web interface, or rely on an explicitly configured auto-approver.
- Ensure the tailnet policy permits the client to use the exit node and includes the required
autogroup:internetpermission. - On the client, opt in by selecting the approved exit node.
- Review local-network-access settings if the client must continue reaching devices on its immediate LAN while the exit node is active.
By default, traffic already directed to a subnet router or app connector is not captured by the exit node. Local-network access while using an exit node is configurable, so the resulting path depends on the client setting as well as policy. The official guidance is available in Exit nodes.

Policy and approval determine reachability
Cryptographic identity proves which node is presenting a key; policy decides what that node may reach. Route advertisements are not an automatic bypass of access rules. Administrators can require approval before a subnet route or exit-node advertisement becomes usable, and policy can limit access to particular users, devices, or destinations.
The syntax and concepts for these controls are documented in Policy syntax. When diagnosing an unexpected path, check both sides of the decision: whether the route or exit node was approved, and whether the client’s identity is authorized for that destination.
Traffic paths in common situations
| Situation | Coordination role | Packet path | Encryption result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two approved tailnet devices with reachable networks | Shares identity, keys, discovery data, and policy | Direct device-to-device path is attempted | WireGuard protects the endpoint-to-endpoint payload |
| Direct connectivity fails | Helps establish the fallback path | DERP forwards packets between endpoints | Packets remain WireGuard-encrypted while relayed |
| Client reaches a private LAN through a subnet router | Distributes the approved route and policy | Client to subnet-router device, then into the advertised private network | Tailnet leg uses WireGuard; authorization still follows policy |
| Client opts into an exit node | Distributes approval and permitted internet access | Client’s non-Tailscale internet traffic exits through the selected tailnet device | Tailnet transport is protected; local-network and route exceptions depend on configuration |
How to reason about a surprising route
If traffic does not follow the path you expected, work through these checks in order:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Identity: Confirm that the client is signed in to the intended tailnet and that the participating device is the one you expect.
- Device keys: Check that the node is enrolled and has not been removed or otherwise invalidated.
- Policy: Verify that the destination, subnet route, or
autogroup:internetaccess is allowed for that identity. - Approval: Confirm that an administrator approved the advertised subnet route or exit node, unless an explicit auto-approval rule applies.
- Path type: Determine whether the connection is direct or being relayed by DERP; a relay indicates a connectivity fallback, not unencrypted traffic.
- Routing scope: Check whether the destination is a private prefix, ordinary internet traffic, or a route excluded from exit-node capture.
- Local-network setting: If an exit node is active, verify whether local LAN access is enabled or disabled as intended.
This sequence separates authorization problems from transport problems. A denied route needs policy or approval work; a relayed route may simply reflect firewall, NAT, or reachability conditions while retaining encrypted payload protection.
The practical security boundary
Tailscale’s architecture places the strongest confidentiality boundary between endpoint devices and intermediate services. User authentication, device enrollment, public-key distribution, and policy are coordinated centrally, while private keys and WireGuard packet processing remain on the nodes. DERP adds a transport fallback without becoming the decryption endpoint.
That boundary does not eliminate the need to manage identities, approve routes carefully, or review policy. A compromised or misconfigured endpoint can still access whatever its authorized identity and routes permit. The safest interpretation is therefore precise: Tailscale separates who a user is, which device is acting, what policy allows, and how encrypted packets travel. Understanding those four questions is more useful than labeling every connection simply “direct” or “through Tailscale.”
The identity documentation was validated on February 11, 2026, and the DERP documentation on January 21, 2026. Operational labels, relay regions, platform support, and policy controls can change, so consult the linked official pages when implementing a deployment.
