SynthID looks for an embedded, usually imperceptible watermark associated with supported AI-generated content. C2PA Content Credentials validate signed provenance records that describe how an asset was created or edited. A SynthID detection is evidence of a watermark; a valid C2PA credential is evidence that specific claims, signatures and content bindings passed validation. Neither system proves that a file is truthful, safe, wholly AI-generated or made by a human when no signal is found.
Use the method that matches the evidence available. For a suspected Google-generated image, video, audio clip or text passage, check for SynthID with a currently supported Google detector. For an asset carrying Content Credentials, inspect the signer, manifest claims and binding status. When both are available, treat them as complementary signals rather than a single “AI or not” verdict.

The short answer: watermark detection versus provenance validation
SynthID is a watermarking and detection system. During supported AI generation, a signal is embedded in the output or, for text, created by adjusting token-probability choices. A detector then estimates whether that signal is present. C2PA Content Credentials are signed provenance records attached to, embedded in or stored alongside an asset. A validator checks the record’s cryptographic signature, assertions and binding to the presented content.
The distinction matters because the two results have different meanings:

- SynthID detected: the tested material likely contains a SynthID watermark within the detector’s supported scope and confidence level.
- C2PA validated: the credential’s signature and covered content passed defined checks; the signer and the claims still require human interpretation.
- Neither found: the item may be unsupported, stripped of metadata or watermark, transformed beyond detection, or created without either system. That result does not establish human authorship.
Neither technology independently establishes that an image depicts a real event, that an audio recording is accurately captioned, or that every production step was disclosed.
What SynthID does and how its watermark is detected
Images, video and audio
Google describes SynthID as embedding a digital signal when supported AI content is created. In images and video, the signal is placed in the visual data and designed to remain imperceptible. Google says the image and video signal is intended to survive common operations such as cropping, filters, frame-rate changes and lossy compression. For audio associated with Lyria and NotebookLM podcast generation, the signal is designed to withstand ordinary noise, MP3 compression and playback-speed changes.
Those are robustness goals, not a guarantee against every transformation. Google cautions that extreme image manipulation can defeat detection. A file can also be outside SynthID’s supported products, partners or modalities, which change as access expands.
Text works differently
SynthID text does not hide a pixel- or audio-style pattern. During generation, the system adjusts token probability scores so that the resulting sequence has a statistical pattern a detector can evaluate. Google’s 2024 explanation says performance is strongest on longer, more varied passages. Thorough rewriting or translation can greatly reduce confidence, and text is harder to watermark when a factual answer leaves very little freedom to vary token choices. Do not transfer image or video robustness expectations to text.
What detector results mean
Google’s 2023 description of image verification uses three interpretations: watermark detected, watermark not detected and watermark possibly detected. These labels describe the detector’s assessment of the submitted material. They are not universal authorship categories. “Possibly detected” is an uncertain signal, while “not detected” can mean no SynthID was embedded, the file is unsupported, or the signal no longer survives.

Where a person can check
Google says users can submit images, video or audio through Gemini and ask whether Google AI created or edited the item. Its overview also describes checks through Search and Chrome. Google launched the SynthID Detector in 2025 and has been expanding access, so the exact interface, eligible file types, participating partners and regional availability should be confirmed in the product being used on the day of checking.
Google’s May 14, 2024 explanation captures the intended scope: “SynthID isn’t a silver bullet for identifying AI generated content, but is an important building block for developing more reliable AI identification tools and can help millions of people make informed decisions about how they interact with AI-generated content.”

A manifest made of signed claims
C2PA is a technical specification for certifying the source and history, or provenance, of media. In the cited C2PA specification version 2.1, a Content Credential (the preferred reader-facing term for a C2PA manifest) combines assertions, a claim, content bindings and a claim signature. A manifest store can travel inside the asset or be held externally and linked to it.
Assertions can describe creation or editing actions, tools, timestamps or other provenance facts. The credential does not automatically prove that the listed actions were complete, accurately described or substantively truthful. It records what the signer asserted and what the validator could verify.
Hard and soft bindings
A binding connects the manifest to the media that a validator is examining. Hard bindings use cryptographic hashes to identify an asset or a portion of it. If the covered bytes change, validation can reveal a mismatch. Soft bindings use fingerprints or invisible watermarks to help associate a credential with content after certain changes. The specification permits soft bindings in general; that does not mean every C2PA credential uses SynthID.

Why signer identity is central
C2PA’s trust model depends on the identity controlling the cryptographic signing key. The version 2.1 specification states: “The basis of making trust decisions in C2PA, our trust model, is the identity of the signer associated with the cryptographic signing key used to sign the claim(s) in the C2PA Manifest Store.” A green validation status therefore answers a technical question about signature and binding checks. You must still decide whether the signer is a source you trust and whether the claims are relevant to the decision at hand.
AI and machine-learning guidance
The C2PA AI/ML guidance, version 2.3, says Content Credentials can provide provenance and authenticity information for models and outputs. For generative media it describes a digital source type for trained-algorithmic media and recommends that output credentials may include model credentials, input provenance, timestamps and explainability information in addition to a basic claim and data hash. These are capabilities or recommendations, not a promise that every generated file carries all of those fields.
How can I tell if an image was made with AI?
Use a staged check rather than treating one indicator as proof.
- Preserve the original. Save the file you received, including its filename and any sidecar or credential file. Screenshots and re-exports can remove metadata or alter pixels.
- Run a supported SynthID check. Submit the image through the currently available Google verification experience, such as the Gemini flow Google documents, and record the exact result: detected, possibly detected or not detected. Note whether the tool says the item was created or edited with Google AI.
- Inspect for Content Credentials. Open a C2PA-aware viewer or validator and check whether a manifest is present, whether its signature validates, which assertions it contains and which portions of the image are bound.
- Assess the signer and claims. Identify the organization or person associated with the signing key. Read whether the manifest describes generation, editing, a camera capture, an import or only a later action. A valid signature does not make an unknown signer authoritative.
- Check the surrounding evidence. Compare the file with the original source, publication context, timestamps, corroborating photographs or video, and independent reporting. Provenance metadata and a watermark cannot establish whether the depicted event actually happened.
Report the result narrowly: for example, “The submitted file produced a SynthID ‘watermark detected’ result,” or “The C2PA manifest signature and image binding validated; the signer’s claim identifies generative processing.” Avoid converting either statement into “the image is fake” or “the image is authentic.”
SynthID and C2PA compared
| Question | SynthID | C2PA Content Credentials |
|---|---|---|
| What is checked? | Whether a supported SynthID watermark is detected in the submitted content. | Whether a provenance manifest, signature, assertions and content bindings pass validation. |
| Evidence type | An embedded, generally imperceptible signal associated with supported AI generation. | Signed provenance claims associated with an asset and its covered content. |
| What a positive result supports | The tested material likely carries a SynthID watermark; interpret the detector’s modality and status. | The presented credential and covered content passed technical checks; inspect signer identity and claim meaning. |
| If nothing appears | Possible unsupported content, absent signal, damaged signal or inconclusive detection. It does not prove human creation. | Possible missing, stripped, external or unsupported credential. Its absence does not prove human creation. |
| Effect of edits | Some image, video and audio transformations are within the design goal; extreme changes may impair detection. Text confidence can fall after rewriting or translation. | Bindings can reveal that covered content changed. A manifest may also be removed or stored separately. |
| Does it establish truth? | No. It identifies evidence of a watermark, not factual accuracy or intent. | No. It validates signed statements and bindings, not the completeness or truth of every statement. |
What happens when a file is edited, compressed or reposted?
Transformations and SynthID
For visual and audio modalities, SynthID is designed to remain detectable after common platform processing. Cropping, ordinary filters, frame-rate changes, lossy compression, background noise, MP3 conversion and speed changes are specifically described as cases the signal is intended to withstand. Detection can still fail after aggressive retouching, heavy re-generation, severe transcoding or other manipulation. A reposted copy may also be too small, too short or otherwise outside the detector’s supported input conditions.

Changes and C2PA bindings
With C2PA, the validator checks the relationship between the presented bytes and the manifest’s bindings. A hard hash mismatch can show that covered content changed after signing. A soft binding may help locate a credential after content undergoes permitted alterations, but it is not an unlimited identity system. The manifest may be embedded in the file, delivered as a sidecar or referenced through an external store; losing that relationship can make a genuine credential unavailable to the viewer.
Therefore, a failed binding is not automatically evidence of malicious editing, and a surviving credential is not evidence that no unrecorded edit occurred. Read the validator’s status and the manifest’s action history together.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does no SynthID watermark mean an image is real?
No. “Not detected” only describes the tested file and detector. The creator may have used a system that does not add SynthID, a participating product may not be supported in your region, the file may have been transformed, or the signal may be below the detector’s confidence threshold. The same logic applies to a missing Content Credential: metadata can be stripped by a platform, stored externally, omitted by the creating application or unsupported by the viewer.
Absence is consequently an information gap, not a positive human-authorship finding. If the stakes are high, seek the original file and independent context instead of inferring authenticity from a blank result.
Can Content Credentials prove an image is authentic?
They can prove a narrower proposition: that a particular signer made particular claims and that the validator’s signature and content-binding checks passed for the presented asset. They cannot, by themselves, prove that the scene is real, that the signer was honest, that all edits were declared, or that the image is being used in its original context.
Best Value
Evaluate four elements separately:
- Signer: Is the signing identity known and appropriate for the claim?
- Claims: Do the assertions say capture, editing, generation or something more limited?
- Coverage: Which bytes or regions are actually bound to the manifest?
- Status: Did the validator report a valid signature and intact binding, or a warning and failure?
This model prevents a common mistake: treating a valid cryptographic envelope as a guarantee about the world depicted inside it.
Can SynthID and C2PA be used together?
Yes. They can provide different layers of evidence. A generator might embed a SynthID watermark and issue a C2PA credential describing the model, inputs and timestamp. A later validator could inspect the manifest while a SynthID detector checks whether the watermark remains in the copied media. C2PA’s general specification allows soft bindings such as invisible watermarks, so the approaches are technically compatible, but compatibility does not mean a particular credential contains SynthID or that every SynthID output has a C2PA record.
When both checks succeed, report each result independently. If they conflict, preserve the original, verify that the detector supports the modality, check whether the credential is external, and investigate transformations before drawing a conclusion. A disagreement is a reason to gather more evidence, not to select whichever system gives the preferred answer.

Text
Text watermark confidence depends on length, variety and the freedom available during generation. Translation, extensive rewriting, paraphrasing and highly constrained factual answers can weaken the pattern. A detector result should therefore include the passage length and editing history when those facts are known.
Video
Video checks concern both the embedded signal and the sampled material presented to the detector. Frame-rate conversion and compression are within SynthID’s stated design targets, but trimming, compositing or severe re-encoding can change what is detectable. A C2PA manifest may describe a sequence of edits while binding only the asset or portions covered by its assertions.
Audio
Noise, MP3 compression and playback-speed changes are named SynthID robustness targets for relevant generated audio. A clip that has been mixed, clipped, time-stretched beyond ordinary playback changes or shortened may produce an uncertain result. C2PA can document audio provenance when a creating or editing application issues a credential, but the manifest still depends on the signer’s declarations.
A reporting checklist for journalists, moderators and investigators
- Identify the modality, file version and any transformations between the original and the tested copy.
- Record the detector name, date, result wording and confidence or status shown by the interface.
- For C2PA, preserve the manifest or sidecar, signer identity, assertions, timestamps and binding status.
- State exactly what the evidence supports: a watermark, a signed claim, an intact binding or an inconclusive check.
- Do not call content human-made merely because no watermark or credential was found.
- Do not call content false merely because it carries an AI watermark; synthetic content can depict a fictional or clearly labeled scene without being deceptive.
- Corroborate consequential claims with original files, source context and independent evidence.
Bottom line
SynthID is best understood as a detector for a particular embedded AI watermark, while C2PA Content Credentials are a framework for validating signed provenance claims. Their positive results answer different questions, and their negative results are inconclusive. Use both when available, qualify every finding by modality and transformation, and keep the signer, claims and real-world context in view before deciding what an AI-generated-media check actually establishes.
