Serializing SVG does not execute JavaScript. The risk begins when untrusted serialized markup is parsed or inserted into a context that activates SVG features—especially when nodes are added to a live web page. If that happens, scripts or event handlers may run with the page’s origin and could expose page data, subject to browser and policy controls.
What makes serialized SVG dangerous?
SVG is markup, not just a picture format. It can contain <script> elements, event-handler attributes such as onclick, resource references, and embedded foreign content. Serializing an SVG DOM into a string preserves its markup; serialization itself does not run that markup.
The security-sensitive transition is later: an application parses, imports, or inserts attacker-controlled SVG in a context where its active features can take effect. A string kept as data is different from markup processed as an active document or added to a live page.
Which SVG handling paths can activate content?
The relevant questions are whether scripts can execute, whether references can load resources, whether interaction is active, and whether content runs in the page’s origin or a more constrained rendering context. The W3C SVG 2 specification distinguishes dynamic interactive processing from secure modes; “SVG is safe as an image” is too broad a rule for every way an application may handle SVG.

| Handling path | Script execution | External references | Interaction and origin context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dynamic interactive SVG | Permitted by the SVG 2 mode | Permitted by the mode | Interactive features can be active; risk depends on how the document is embedded and its origin context. |
| Secure static SVG mode | Disabled | Disabled | Animation and interaction are disabled in this mode. |
SVG parsed by DOMParser as image/svg+xml |
Scripts do not run in the parsed document itself | Parsing is not a security guarantee for later use | The parsed document is effectively inert, but its nodes can become active after insertion into the visible DOM. |
| SVG inserted into a live page | Can be activated depending on the insertion path and browser processing context | Can be relevant depending on markup and policy | Active content may affect the page in which it is inserted. |
The W3C SVG 2 conformance text defines script execution to include SVG <script> elements and scripts in event attributes such as onclick. It says, “When script execution is disabled in an SVG document, no script in the document must be run.” That guarantee applies to the specified disabled-script processing mode; it does not mean arbitrary SVG strings are safe to inject into an active page.
Why parsing with DOMParser is not sanitizing
DOMParser.parseFromString() can parse an SVG string as XML using the image/svg+xml MIME type. MDN describes the returned document as effectively inert: scripts are disabled and event handlers do not run there. But that state is not a cleanup step. MDN warns that scripts and event handlers can run if nodes from the parsed document are inserted into the visible DOM.

Parsing can help an application inspect or transform markup, but it does not remove dangerous elements or attributes. Treat the parsed tree as untrusted until a sanitizer has applied the rules for the features the application actually needs.
How SVG injection can expose data
If malicious SVG becomes active in a page, its code may be able to read sensitive data available to that page and transmit it, subject to the victim page’s origin, browser protections, and content security policy. Possible targets include page content, form inputs, or session-related data accessible to page scripts. This is not the same as SVG serialization accessing browser secrets: the string alone has no such capability.

A GitHub Advisory Database report published March 18, 2026, described malicious SVG content entering through templates in @pdfme/schemas and being inserted with innerHTML. The reported impacts included session or token theft, keylogging of form inputs, phishing by modifying the page, and data exfiltration. The advisory assigned that specific vulnerability a CVSS v3 base score of 6.1 (Moderate); that score is not a general rating of SVG files or SVG injection.
A separate Angular project advisory illustrates another route: user-controlled href or xlink:href bindings on SVG <script> elements could be treated as ordinary strings rather than resource URLs, enabling data:text/javascript or external script payloads. The advisory listed patched versions 19.2.18, 20.3.16, 21.0.7, and 21.1.0-rc.0. Those are the versions listed in that advisory, not a substitute for checking its current guidance for the release line in use.

How to handle untrusted SVG safely
If you only need to show text
Do not interpret the input as HTML or SVG. Use a text-only sink such as textContent, with normal output encoding for the surrounding context. OWASP advises against putting untrusted data into innerHTML and recommends textContent when the update is text.

If the application must accept SVG markup
- Define the required features. Decide which SVG elements, attributes, and references the application actually needs. Use a deliberate allowlist rather than trying to enumerate every dangerous form in a blacklist.
- Sanitize before insertion. Use a maintained sanitizer configured for the required SVG feature set, such as DOMPurify or an equivalent. Remove executable elements and event-handler attributes, and restrict URL-bearing attributes and external references as needed.
- Sanitize parsed trees too. If using
DOMParser, sanitize the resulting tree before importing or appending any nodes to the active document. Parsing and checking that XML is well formed are not security boundaries. - Audit every route into an active DOM. Check
innerHTML,outerHTML,insertAdjacentHTML, document writing, template renderers, framework bindings, SVG script URL attributes, and code that moves nodes from an inert parsed document into a live page. - Use Trusted Types where supported by the application. Enforcing
require-trusted-types-forcan make dangerous DOM injection sinks require a trusted transformation. Trusted Types is an enforcement framework, not a sanitizer; the transformation still has to sanitize correctly. - Use CSP as defense in depth. A restrictive script policy can constrain execution, and request restrictions can limit some exfiltration paths. CSP is not a replacement for input validation and output encoding. Policy coverage matters: the CSP specification notes that omitting
default-srccan leave request types uncovered, while a permissive directive may reopen a route.
What a secure review should verify
- Is the SVG kept as inert data, rendered through a constrained image/resource path, or inserted into a live document?
- Does any path permit SVG scripts, event attributes, resource references, or embedded foreign content?
- Does the sanitizer allow only the elements, attributes, and URL forms needed for the feature?
- Are framework-specific bindings and less obvious DOM sinks included in the review?
- Does the deployed CSP meaningfully constrain scripts and outbound requests without relying on policy as the only safeguard?
