Effective protection depends on choosing broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, applying enough to every exposed area, reapplying on schedule, and adding shade and sun-protective clothing.
What sunscreen protects you from
Sunlight contains ultraviolet radiation that reaches the Earth in two forms most relevant to everyday skin protection: UVA and UVB. Both can damage skin and contribute to skin cancer when exposure is excessive, but they affect the skin differently.

UVA: aging and exposure through windows
UVA contributes to premature skin aging, including wrinkles and age spots. It can pass through window glass, so exposure can occur while you are near a sunny window or driving. UVA is not the main cause of the immediate redness associated with sunburn, which is why judging exposure only by whether your skin feels hot or looks red can miss ongoing damage.
UVB: the main cause of sunburn
UVB is the primary cause of sunburn. Ordinary window glass blocks UVB, but outdoor exposure remains substantial, especially when the skin is uncovered for long periods. UVB also contributes to skin cancer.

Because both types of radiation matter, a product that addresses only one does not provide complete UV protection. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) recommends looking for the words broad spectrum, which means the sunscreen is intended to protect against both UVA and UVB.
How sunscreen works on the skin
Sunscreen forms a protective layer over the skin. That layer absorbs UV rays before they can penetrate as deeply into exposed skin; according to the AAD, physical or mineral sunscreens also reflect rays. This protective-layer description explains the practical reason coverage must be even: an uncovered patch has no sunscreen layer to reduce the radiation reaching it.
Labels commonly divide active ingredients into mineral and chemical categories. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are mineral (physical) active ingredients. Chemical sunscreens use other UV-filter ingredients. The AAD says both categories absorb rays, while physical products also reflect them. It does not support the idea that mineral products work only by reflection.
Neither category is automatically more effective. A broad-spectrum, water-resistant product with SPF 30 or higher can protect effectively when it is applied generously and reapplied as directed. The best category is the one you can use consistently and comfortably. Dermatologists commonly recommend mineral sunscreen for people with sensitive skin, but personal tolerance, finish, and the ability to apply enough matter more than the marketing label alone.
What SPF means—and what it does not mean
SPF, or sun protection factor, primarily describes protection against sunburn-causing UVB. It is not a direct measure of UVA protection; broad-spectrum labeling addresses UVA and UVB coverage together.
| Label | AAD UVB figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| SPF 15 | Filters 93% of UVB rays | Provides less UVB filtering than SPF 30 and is below the AAD’s preferred minimum for routine sunscreen selection. |
| SPF 30 | Filters 97% of UVB rays | Meets the AAD recommendation when the product is also broad spectrum and water resistant. |
These percentages do not grant a corresponding number of extra minutes in the sun. They are laboratory-style filtration figures, not a promise that SPF 30 lets you stay outside twice as long as SPF 15. Sweat, swimming, rubbing, uneven application, time of day, location, and the amount applied all change real-world protection.

The AAD recommends SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum coverage, and water resistance for sunscreen used on exposed skin.
How to choose a sunscreen label
Start with broad spectrum
Broad spectrum is the label term that signals UVA and UVB coverage. Do not treat a high SPF number as a substitute for broad-spectrum wording: SPF principally communicates UVB and sunburn protection.
Check the SPF
Choose SPF 30 or higher for routine outdoor use, consistent with AAD guidance. A higher number does not eliminate the need for adequate application, shade, clothing, or reapplication.

Read the water-resistance time
A water-resistance claim states how long the sunscreen is expected to remain effective on wet skin. AAD labels indicate either 40 minutes or 80 minutes of water resistance. Reapply after that period if you are swimming or sweating, following the product directions.

Water resistance does not mean waterproof. Even if your skin stays dry, the AAD advises reapplying every two hours while outdoors because sunscreen can wear away through movement, toweling, clothing, and ordinary contact.
Consider active ingredients and format
Ingredient category, skin sensitivity, cosmetic feel, and format all affect whether you will use enough product repeatedly. Sunscreen is sold as lotions, creams, gels, sticks, and sprays.
- Mineral formulas: contain zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both. They may be a useful choice for sensitive skin.
- Chemical formulas: use chemical UV filters and can offer a texture or finish some users prefer.
- Sticks: can be convenient around the nose, ears, and other small areas, but make enough passes to create full coverage.
- Sprays: must be applied thoroughly and rubbed in for even coverage, rather than left as a visibly thin mist.
- Lotions, creams, and gels: make it easier to measure and spread a generous amount over larger areas.
When tinted sunscreen may help
Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxide can provide protection from visible light in addition to UV protection. That extra coverage may matter for people concerned about dark spots or hyperpigmentation. Tinted protection does not replace broad-spectrum sunscreen; the product should still provide broad-spectrum coverage and an SPF of 30 or higher.
How much sunscreen to apply
For most adults, the AAD says about 1 ounce—roughly a shot glass—is needed to cover skin not covered by clothing. The correct amount varies with body size and how much skin is exposed, so a person wearing long sleeves and trousers needs less than someone in swimwear.
Apply to every exposed area, not only the face or shoulders. Commonly missed sites include the ears and feet. Also check the hairline, neck, backs of hands, tops of feet, and any exposed skin around clothing edges. Sunscreen cannot protect skin that is never covered because no product was applied there.
When and how to apply it
- Apply before going outdoors. Put sunscreen on exposed skin before you leave, rather than waiting until you are already in direct sun.
- Use a generous amount. Work toward the AAD’s approximately 1-ounce amount for most adults, adjusting for your body size and exposed area.
- Spread it evenly. Cover the ears, feet, neck, hands, face, and other areas clothing does not cover. With a spray, rub the product in so the layer is uniform.
- Reapply every two hours outdoors. This schedule applies even when skin remains dry.
- Reapply after swimming or sweating. Follow the package’s 40- or 80-minute water-resistance claim, then reapply. Reapply sooner after toweling or if the product has visibly rubbed off.
Make sunscreen part of the preparation routine for outdoor errands, commuting, sport, gardening, and travel—not just deliberate sunbathing. UVA can reach you through window glass, while UVB is blocked by that glass, so broad-spectrum use may be relevant for prolonged daylight exposure near windows as well as outside.

- Wear clothing that covers more skin and add a hat when practical.
- Use sunscreen on the exposed skin that clothing does not cover.
- Reapply rather than assuming the first application lasts all day.
The AAD estimates that about 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. That figure is a population estimate for the United States, not a prediction for an individual, but it illustrates why relying on a single protective measure is unwise.
Comparing products without being misled by marketing
Use the same decision sequence for any sunscreen you are considering:
- Confirm broad spectrum. This is the check for UVA and UVB coverage.
- Confirm SPF 30 or higher. SPF is principally the UVB and sunburn measure.
- Check water resistance. Note whether the label specifies 40 or 80 minutes and plan reapplication around swimming and sweating.
- Choose ingredients you tolerate. Mineral and chemical categories can both protect effectively. Sensitive skin may favor a mineral option.
- Choose a format you can apply generously. A theoretically suitable product is less useful if its texture makes you apply too little or skip areas.
- Add tint only for a reason. Iron oxide in a tinted formula may help with visible-light-related pigmentation concerns, while broad-spectrum UV protection remains essential.
This framework avoids treating “mineral,” “spray,” “tinted,” or a very high SPF number as a guarantee of superior protection. Consistent, adequate use is the deciding factor.

Skipping broad-spectrum wording
Mistake: Selecting a product by SPF alone.
Correction: Require broad-spectrum labeling so the product is intended to address UVA as well as UVB.
Applying too little
Mistake: Using a small dab on large exposed areas.
Correction: Aim for approximately 1 ounce for most adults, adjusted for body size and exposed skin.
Missing small or shaded-looking areas
Mistake: Leaving ears, feet, neck, or the backs of hands untreated because they are not the center of attention.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Correction: Apply methodically to every area not covered by clothing.
Assuming water resistance is permanent
Mistake: Treating “water resistant” as waterproof or all-day protection.
Correction: Reapply after the stated 40 or 80 minutes in water, after sweating or swimming, and every two hours outdoors even when dry.
Spraying and not rubbing
Mistake: Leaving a spray as a patchy mist.
Correction: Apply thoroughly and rub it in for even coverage, as the AAD advises.

A practical daily routine
Before leaving home, select a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher product and apply it to exposed skin. Use enough to approach the AAD’s approximately 1-ounce guidance for most adults, paying attention to ears, feet, neck, hands, and the face. Add clothing and seek shade when possible. If you remain outdoors, set a two-hour reapplication reminder; restart the timing after swimming or heavy sweating and follow the product’s 40- or 80-minute water-resistance duration. For pigmentation concerns, a tinted product with iron oxide can add visible-light protection, but it still needs the same broad-spectrum and SPF criteria.
