In experiments on polyethylene, researchers detected thousands of molecular formulas among the products. Those counts are not a tally of fully identified substances: a detected formula does not, by itself, reveal a molecule’s structure, concentration or toxicity.
What the polyethylene study found
A 2021 study examined four single-use polyethylene bags from major retailers and a sample of pure polyethylene film. The bags differed in formulation and contained inorganic additives. Under the study’s conditions, exposure to sunlight increased dissolved organic carbon compared with dark leaching, and the amount and composition of the dissolved products varied by sample. The researchers reported a 3- to 80-fold increase in dissolved organic carbon under light across the tested polyethylene samples. Read the study in Environmental Science & Technology.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s summary gives examples of the formula counts: about 5,000 for the tested Target bag, about 15,000 for the tested Walmart bag and about 9,000 for the pure polyethylene film. The products were water-soluble, and their production was observed over weeks. These figures describe those samples and the experimental setup; they are not counts that can be applied to every plastic bag or piece of polyethylene. WHOI’s summary of the study.
What “thousands of compounds” means
The headline count refers to molecular formulas detected using ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry. A formula is a measurement clue, not necessarily a fully identified molecule: it does not automatically establish a compound’s precise structure. Formula counts also do not state how much of each product formed or whether it persists, is toxic or affects organisms.

That distinction matters because one experiment can detect many formulas without providing a complete chemical inventory or a risk assessment of the mixture. The 2021 study establishes that the tested polyethylene samples produced chemically diverse dissolved material under illumination; the counts alone do not establish the effects of that material. Sunlight can change plastic chemically, not only physically
Plastic weathering is often described in terms of fragmentation: larger items break into smaller particles. The polyethylene study also tracked products in polymer, dissolved and gas phases, showing why fragmentation is not the only relevant pathway. In a separate experiment, irradiated polypropylene particles smaller than a millimeter underwent photodissolution without significant fragmentation over one year under that experiment’s conditions. That result shows chemical dissolution can happen without significant particle-size reduction in a particular setup; it does not show that fragmentation never happens outdoors or in the ocean. Results vary by plastic, light and exposure time
A 2023 seawater experiment examined polyethylene, polypropylene and expanded polystyrene microplastics. It reported 319–705 photoproduct formulas under light, compared with 0–12 in dark conditions, for the tested materials. The detected products included oxygen-containing formulas, and their characteristics differed with polymer composition. This supports the conclusion that sunlight can produce diverse dissolved material from more than one tested polymer, but the results remain specific to the samples and conditions studied. A 2025 study reported a 1,000-day outdoor natural-sunlight experiment involving five plastics. Its abstract describes short-term dissolution followed by longer-term oxidation and molecular recombination, with outcomes affected by polymer composition and irradiation duration. The experiment underscores why material type and time matter; it should not be read as a direct prediction of what will happen to every plastic item in the sea. The 2025 study.

What these findings do—and do not—tell us
- Established: Sunlight can transform tested plastics into dissolved organic products, alongside other forms of weathering.
- Sample-specific: The formula counts and dissolved-carbon measurements differ by plastic formulation and experimental conditions.
- Not established by formula counts: The complete identities, concentrations, persistence or toxicity of every detected product.
- Not a universal forecast: Laboratory and outdoor experiments do not by themselves quantify how quickly a particular plastic will change in a natural setting.
As WHOI co-author Collin Ward put it, “It’s astonishing to think that sunlight can break down plastic, which is essentially one compound that typically has some additives mixed in, into tens of thousands of compounds that dissolve in water.” The measured counts give that reaction a precise meaning: researchers detected many molecular formulas, rather than identifying every resulting substance or determining the effects of the entire mixture.
