The official Dragon Ball material presents him as a decisive threat to the two heroes together, able to withstand Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon. Yet Nappa dismisses him as a “weakling,” and the Saiyans who arrive afterward—especially Vegeta—sit much higher in the story’s threat hierarchy. Gohan’s brief rage surge can also knock Raditz back, although that is not his normal strength.
The safest comparison is therefore qualitative rather than numerical: Raditz is above the early Goku and Piccolo in a fair fight, vulnerable to a rare burst from Gohan’s latent potential, and clearly below Nappa and Vegeta. The official pages consulted do not give Raditz a confirmed Power Level, so any exact number assigned to him should be treated as disputed rather than established canon.

What the official material actually establishes
Raditz arrives during the Saiyan arc as a major early villain. The Dragon Ball Official Site’s “Weekly ☆ Character Showcase #21: Raditz!” (September 28, 2021) says that Goku and Piccolo set out together to defeat him, but Raditz’s power overwhelms them. He also survives Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon, the attack that later becomes central to his defeat.

Nappa cruelly calls him a “weakling,” and the profile explains that Raditz appears to be one of the weaker Saiyan fighters. This is a relative judgment inside the Saiyan group, not a precise numerical ranking.

The official pages reviewed do not state an exact Raditz Power Level. Secondary lists often assign him a number, but they disagree with one another. Presenting one of those figures as settled canon would give a false sense of precision.
Raditz versus Goku and Piccolo
Raditz wins the opening exchange
At the start of the fight, Goku and Piccolo are acting as a team because neither expects to handle Raditz alone. The official summary says Raditz overwhelms them together. That is the clearest direct measure of his strength in the story: the two most capable defenders on Earth at that stage cannot simply overpower him.
Raditz also withstands Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon. The technique is powerful enough to matter even though Piccolo cannot use it as a quick, repeated attack. Surviving the first confrontation shows that Raditz’s durability is a serious part of the threat, not merely his ability to trade punches.
How the heroes win
Goku and Piccolo do not win by proving that either one has become stronger than Raditz. Goku manages to seize Raditz by the tail, exploiting a weakness that leaves him unable to fight normally. Gohan then crashes into Raditz, giving Goku the opening needed to hold him in place while Piccolo fires the killing blow.
That sequence is a coordinated victory built around Raditz’s weakness and a temporary interruption. It should not be read as evidence that early-series Goku or Piccolo could defeat Raditz in a conventional one-on-one battle. The official account supports the opposite conclusion: Raditz is the superior combatant until the heroes create a very specific opening.

Raditz versus Gohan
The 1,307 reading is a temporary spike
During the Raditz battle, Gohan’s anger releases his latent potential. The Dragon Ball Official Site’s “Weekly ☆ Character Showcase #20: The Saiyan Arc’s Son Gohan!” (September 21, 2021) gives that burst a Power Level of 1,307. Gohan uses the surge to headbutt Raditz and knock him backward.
This does not mean ordinary, untrained Gohan was stronger than Raditz throughout the fight. The number appears at a moment of extreme rage and is described as an expression of hidden potential. Gohan cannot maintain it as a normal fighting level, and he does not defeat Raditz by himself.
The incident does establish an important qualification to Raditz’s dominance: a sudden explosion of power from Gohan can hurt him. Raditz is stronger than the heroes’ ordinary forms at this point, but he is not immune to exceptional bursts from a character whose potential has not yet been developed.
Why later Gohan numbers should not be mixed into this comparison
After Piccolo trains Gohan, another anger-driven reading reaches 2,800 during the battle against Nappa. That later figure belongs to a different story stage and follows training. It demonstrates why undated “strongest character” lists can be misleading: Gohan’s 1,307 and 2,800 are spikes under different circumstances, not a single stable progression that can be applied to every scene.
Raditz versus Nappa
Nappa is presented as a clear step above him
The official Raditz profile’s “weakling” remark comes from Nappa, who is a fellow Saiyan rather than an impartial narrator. Even with that qualification, the surrounding story supports Nappa’s judgment. In “The Story of Dragon Ball in 42 Panels – Part Two,” Piccolo—who had helped defeat Raditz—is shocked by Nappa’s power when the next Saiyan invasion begins.

The comparison is therefore stronger than an insult alone. Piccolo has firsthand experience of Raditz, yet Nappa’s arrival makes him realize that a much greater threat has reached Earth. The material establishes a substantial qualitative gap, but it does not provide a reliable Raditz-to-Nappa multiplier.

What cannot be concluded
There is no official number in the cited pages that lets you say Nappa is exactly twice, five times, or any other fixed multiple of Raditz. A precise ratio would be an interpretation drawn from outside the supplied official profiles, not a confirmed Dragon Ball reading.
Raditz versus Vegeta
Vegeta occupies a higher tier of Saiyan power and status
Vegeta arrives with Nappa as the Saiyan prince and an elite warrior. The official “Weekly ☆ Character Showcase #237: Vegeta from the Saiyan Arc!” (December 30, 2025) places him at the center of the invasion’s strongest threat. After Nappa is removed from the fight, Vegeta takes over the confrontation and defeats Goku in the subsequent battle.
That narrative position puts Vegeta far above Raditz in practical terms. Raditz is defeated only after Goku, Piccolo and Gohan combine a trap around his weakness. Vegeta, by contrast, remains the dominant surviving Saiyan after the earlier fighting and personally overcomes Goku when the story reaches its next major showdown.
The official pages do not supply a directly comparable numerical reading for Raditz and Vegeta. The defensible conclusion is a ranking, not a multiplier: Vegeta is decisively stronger and more dangerous than Raditz at this point in the story.

A story-stage comparison
Comparing Dragon Ball characters works best when three variables stay separate: the point in the story, the character’s ordinary strength, and any short-lived power surge. The following summary uses only outcomes and figures established by the official material.
| Character or state | Story stage | Officially established evidence | What it means for the Raditz comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raditz | Opening Saiyan arc | Overwhelms Goku and Piccolo together; withstands Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon; called a “weakling” by Nappa | Dominant over the early Earth defenders, but relatively weak among Saiyans |
| Goku and Piccolo together | Raditz fight | Need a tail-grab, Gohan’s tackle and Piccolo’s finishing attack to win | Cannot establish a normal one-on-one victory over Raditz |
| Gohan, rage surge | Raditz fight | Power Level 1,307; headbutts Raditz | Can injure or stagger Raditz briefly, but is not a sustained superior fighter |
| Gohan, later rage surge | Nappa fight after Piccolo’s training | Power Level 2,800 | A later event that should not be treated as Gohan’s Raditz-arc baseline |
| Nappa | Later Saiyan invasion | Calls Raditz a “weakling”; Piccolo is shocked by Nappa’s power | Clearly above Raditz in the story’s threat progression |
| Vegeta | Later Saiyan invasion | Saiyan prince and elite warrior; takes over the battle and defeats Goku | Far above Raditz in narrative status and demonstrated combat threat |
Why Raditz has no settled official Power Level
Dragon Ball’s early scouter readings encourage numerical comparisons, but not every character receives a confirmed number. The official Raditz profile discusses his battle results and his position among Saiyans without assigning him a Power Level. That omission matters because a number copied from a fan compilation can look authoritative while lacking agreement across sources.
The one famous number associated with Raditz’s opening scene is not Raditz’s own strength. In the 2024 retrospective “Monthly Dragon Ball Report #4: The Fierce Battle Against the Saiyans Who Invaded Earth!”, the manga line is quoted as: “Power Level… only 5. What a planet!” Raditz is speaking about the farmer whose reading is five. It is a joke about Earth’s apparent weakness, not a measurement of Raditz.
For that reason, a sound comparison should use confirmed events: who overwhelms whom, who survives a signature attack, who needs a team or a special condition, and how later characters react to the next threat.

Raditz’s place in the Saiyan arc
He is the first proof that Earth’s heroes have outgrown their old scale
Before Raditz arrives, Goku is the central benchmark for martial strength on Earth. Raditz changes that immediately. His arrival reveals Goku’s extraterrestrial origin and shows that a Saiyan warrior can overpower Goku and Piccolo while treating Earth’s defenders as a minor obstacle.

That makes Raditz extremely strong from the viewpoint of the first Z-era conflict. His “weakling” label only becomes meaningful when the story introduces other Saiyans. Relative to Earth, he is a crisis; relative to Nappa and Vegeta, he is the low end of the invading force.
The escalation is intentional
The arc is structured as a ladder. Raditz defeats the heroes’ expectations, Nappa shocks Piccolo after Raditz’s defeat, and Vegeta becomes the more formidable leader who personally confronts Goku. Treating all three Saiyans as interchangeable erases the escalation that the official summaries emphasize.
Where the Raditz story appears
The official 2024 retrospective connects Raditz’s debut and defeat with Dragon Ball Z manga volume 17. That volume is the natural starting point for readers who want the complete sequence in its original manga context, including the scouter readings, the tail weakness and Gohan’s intervention. Edition availability and listings vary by market, so check the current local edition before buying.

For the specific opening-Saiyan-arc comparisons, the order is straightforward. Raditz is stronger than early Goku or Piccolo in a normal fight, though their teamwork and his tail weakness make a victory possible. Gohan’s 1,307 rage burst can knock him back without making Gohan the stronger sustained combatant. Nappa is clearly above Raditz, and Vegeta is higher still, with the official story presenting him as an elite Saiyan who defeats Goku after taking over the battle.
So the most accurate one-sentence answer is: Raditz is a major threat to Earth’s early heroes, but he is the weakest of the principal Saiyan invaders shown in this stage of Dragon Ball Z.
