Fortnite account theft is a real security risk, but the available reporting does not establish how large the market is today or what sellers typically earn. Reported routes include password reuse exploited through credential stuffing and phishing pages that imitate Epic Games sign-in screens. Epic recommends using a unique password, enabling two-factor authentication (2FA), securing linked accounts and avoiding suspicious external offers that ask for login details.
How are Fortnite accounts stolen?
Password reuse and credential stuffing
Night Lion Security describes attackers trying username-and-password combinations exposed in other data breaches against Epic accounts. This is called credential stuffing: criminals exploit the fact that some people reuse passwords across services. It is a reported attack route, not proof of how any particular account was compromised. Night Lion also described public proxies being used to vary apparent IP addresses during account checking. Its account of those tactics and Epic’s response is the security firm’s retrospective, not independently verified telemetry. Night Lion Security’s case study

Fake rewards and locker-value pages
Phishing is a separate route. A July 31, 2026 report by Malwarebytes described fake Fortnite reward and locker-value sites that imitate Epic sign-in pages. If someone enters Epic credentials on a lookalike page, the page operator can capture them. Epic’s policy warns players not to trust suspicious external offers—particularly free titles or V-Bucks offers—that ask for login details. Malwarebytes’ report and Epic’s Safety and Security Center

No. The headline’s dark-web framing should not be taken to mean every account changes hands through a dark-web marketplace. Night Lion discussed stolen-account sales in the market it examined, while a December 2025 PC Gamer report on Epic’s allegations against Isaac Strock described hundreds of accounts allegedly sold through Telegram. That report concerns one individual case; it does not show how common Telegram sales or account theft are overall. PC Gamer’s report

A 2019 class-action complaint alleged that compromised accounts could expose payment details and that accounts with in-game purchases were resold. Those are allegations in a legal pleading, not findings established by a court in the cited source. Payment information is not necessarily exposed in every account compromise. The complaint
How much do sellers make?
Night Lion Security said high-profile vendors in the market it examined were clearing tens of thousands of dollars per month. The case-study page does not provide audited revenue figures or a sample and method that would support a market-wide estimate. Its account of market conditions is explicitly framed as of January 2021, so the figure is not a current 2026 estimate, a typical seller’s income or a measure of total market revenue. The cited reporting does not establish the current number of stolen Fortnite accounts for sale, aggregate revenue or a typical account price. The alleged Telegram sales in the later PC Gamer report are an individual case, not a basis for estimating the whole market.
How to secure your Epic account
- Change reused passwords. Give your Epic Games account a strong password you do not use elsewhere. Epic recommends a unique password and suggests using password-manager software to generate and store unique passwords. Epic’s account-security guidance
- Turn on 2FA. Epic supports authentication by authenticator app, SMS or email, and says, “Using an authenticator app provides the strongest protection.”
- Protect linked accounts. Enable 2FA on linked console and social accounts too; Epic notes that linked services can be used to access an Epic account.
- Reject suspicious login requests. Do not enter Epic credentials on third-party sites offering free V-Bucks, rewards or locker valuations. Epic specifically warns against suspicious external offers that ask for login details.
- Contact Epic if you cannot sign in. Epic directs users with account or password problems to customer service. Its guidance does not guarantee that every account can be restored or specify a recovery timeline. Epic Games customer service
Epic says it monitors financial transactions and gifting for fraudulent behavior. These safeguards and account-protection steps reduce risk, but no security measure makes compromise impossible. Epic’s Safety and Security Center
