How SteamVR Works: What You Need to Play PC VR Games

To play SteamVR games, you need a Windows PC that can run the specific game, a compatible VR headset with its required tracking and input hardware, Steam and SteamVR, and a supported wired or wireless connection. The PC renders the game; SteamVR connects it to the headset and controllers. Meeting Steam’s baseline requirements is only a starting point, not a guarantee that every title will run smoothly on every headset.

What SteamVR does—and what it does not do

SteamVR is Steam’s PC virtual-reality software layer. It coordinates a VR application with a headset and its tracking and input devices. It does not replace the PC, headset, or any headset-specific setup software or hardware.

In a typical wired setup, the PC runs the game and sends its video to the headset over the headset’s supported connection. In a wireless setup such as Steam Link, the PC still runs Steam and SteamVR; the headset receives the game as a network stream. Steam Link is a streaming option, not a way to run PC VR games without a capable PC.

What you need to play

  • A compatible PC: Check SteamVR’s published baseline, then compare your computer with the requirements for the game and headset you plan to use.
  • A compatible headset: Confirm support for the exact model and connection method. Depending on the headset, you may also need controllers, base stations, or other tracking hardware.
  • Steam and SteamVR: Install Steam, then install SteamVR through Steam.
  • A supported connection: This may be a direct cable connection or wireless streaming, depending on the headset and setup.
  • A safe play area: Seated and standing setups need less room than room-scale play. Clear the area of obstacles before moving around in VR.

These parts are not interchangeable across all headsets. For example, Valve Index uses DisplayPort, USB and power connections, plus base stations; another headset may use different cables, tracking, software or setup steps. Use the current manual for your exact headset.

How to check whether your PC and game are compatible

Check compatibility at three levels: the PC, the headset and the individual game. Steam’s SteamVR requirements provide a general baseline. Each game’s Steam store page gives title-specific requirements and VR compatibility information. The headset maker’s documentation identifies supported PC connections and any additional hardware or setup software.

Steam’s published SteamVR baseline lists an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent processor, 4 GB RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent graphics card; GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 480 equivalent graphics is listed as recommended. The page also lists broadband internet and USB 2.0 or newer, plus HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 or newer. These are Steam’s general SteamVR figures, not a promise of smooth performance for every game, headset resolution or refresh rate.

For practical Windows use, note the same support page’s qualification that the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024. Its older SteamVR operating-system list includes legacy Windows versions, but that wording should not be taken to mean the current Steam Client supports those versions.

Before choosing a setup, verify the exact game and headset combination, your graphics performance against the game’s requirements, whether you will connect by cable or stream over a network, and whether you have enough safe space for your preferred play style.

Wired setup: install, connect and configure

Exact steps vary by headset. Valve’s Index guide illustrates one wired setup rather than a universal procedure: update graphics drivers, install SteamVR, connect the headset’s DisplayPort to the graphics card, connect USB 3.0 to the computer and power to an outlet, then launch SteamVR and complete Room Setup.

  1. Check that the PC meets the headset and game requirements, and update its graphics drivers as advised by the headset maker.
  2. Install Steam and install SteamVR through Steam.
  3. Choose a safe location for play and connect any required tracking hardware.
  4. Connect the headset using the ports and sequence specified in its manual.
  5. Launch SteamVR and check that the headset and other required devices are recognized and ready.
  6. Complete the headset’s room or play-area setup, if required, following its on-screen instructions.

If SteamVR does not recognize a device, check that its required cables are connected to the correct PC ports and that any headset-specific software or tracking hardware is set up. For model-specific troubleshooting, follow the headset maker’s current support guidance rather than assuming all headsets share the Index connection layout.

Choose seated, standing or room-scale play

Room-scale play requires clear floor space; seated and standing play do not require the same area. For Valve Index, Valve specifies at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) of free space for room-scale VR. Standing-only or seated setups need less. Clear obstacles from the space you intend to use and follow the play-area guidance for your headset.

Steam lists Windows 10 or newer and an NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD RX 570 as Steam Link minimums, with RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT identified as exceptions. It recommends 16 GB memory and an NVIDIA RTX 2070 or better. These are Steam Link specifications, not universal SteamVR requirements.

For the network, Steam lists a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router as the minimum and recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. Wireless streaming adds network and headset compatibility requirements; a wired headset setup does not require a Wi-Fi 6 router.

Linux: check the desktop and driver setup first

Steam’s Linux SteamVR guidance describes additional constraints beyond the general PC requirements. It says to use the native Steam package rather than unsupported Snap or Flatpak packages, and notes that SteamVR requires DRM leasing. Not all Wayland compositors support DRM leasing; the guidance identifies Gnome Wayland as unsupported. Verify your distribution, graphics driver, compositor and headset combination before relying on Linux for a particular setup.
