Steam reviews are useful for narrowing an RPG shortlist, but a score is only a summary of player sentiment—not a prediction that you will enjoy the game. Use the overall rating for long-term reception, recent reviews to assess the game’s current state, and detailed comments to check whether its strengths and problems matter to the way you play.
What Steam’s Review Score tells you
Steam’s Review Score is a category based on the percentage of positive reviews. It can quickly show whether players have generally recommended a game, but it does not tell you what they praised or criticized. A favorable score could reflect storytelling, combat, or value; the reviews themselves help establish whether those are the parts you care about. Steam’s review guidance explains how the system works.

Steam’s August 18, 2025 announcement says the overall Review Score needs 10 reviews. That is a much lower threshold than the one for a language-specific score, so a score based on a small pool deserves more caution than a large, detailed set of reviews.

Check whether the RPG’s current state matches its overall rating
An RPG’s launch reception may not describe its present condition. Updates can change performance, balance, or features, while a long Early Access period or changes in ongoing support can also shape what players experience over time. Use the overall score as a broad view of reception and check recent reviews for evidence about the game as it stands now.
#1 Best Overall
- Total Warfare Edition includes additional playable characters, mini-games, and content previously available as DLC
- Combines roguelike-style deckbuilding with turn-based SRPGs for a brand-new experience
- Over 100 cards to collect and build a deck with, all with unique designs
Steam selects prominent reviews from recently written reviews. It may also display a recent review score when a game has enough recent reviews and is more than 45 days past release. Steam’s historic explanation defines the recent-review window as the preceding 30 days; availability and display rules can change, so check the game’s current store page rather than assuming every RPG will show a recent score. See Steam’s review guidance.
Check which language’s score you are seeing
Steam’s August 18, 2025 announcement says that, for some games, it calculates a score for a particular language and displays the score associated with the viewer’s primary language. This applies when a game has more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews and at least 200 reviews in at least one language. If the option appears, select “See language breakdown” to see how sentiment differs across languages.
Rank #2
- Asdivine Hearts II- Power, feelings, and wishes cross each other. A journey that would determinate the world’s fate begins!
- Revenant Dogma- Transform to get your victory in dynamic turn-based battles!
- Fernz Gate - Support your allies or unleash powerful magic in tag-team during battles!
- Alvastia Chronicles - More than 100 companions with up to 13 party members! Sound composed by Ryuji Sasai
- Languages - Subtitles in English and Japanese.
Language-specific scores can be useful when translation quality, cultural references, or network conditions affect the experience. They also mean two players may not see the same score. Steam’s announcement, “Updates to User Review Scores Based on Language,” states: “When there are enough reviews written in a particular language, Steam will calculate a review score for that language.”

Read several positive and negative reviews that explain their recommendations. Look for concrete observations about the parts of an RPG you care about: narrative, combat, exploration, character progression, bugs, performance, translation, online requirements, or value. Steam describes informative reviews as ones that help prospective players judge whether they are likely to enjoy a game, including by discussing issues such as bugs and value.

Review ordering can help you find more useful explanations. Steam’s August 14, 2024 announcement says its helpfulness system sorts some low-information reviews—such as one-word reviews, ASCII art, and primarily playful memes—behind other reviews. This changes display order, not the game’s Review Score. As Steam put it, “This change doesn’t impact how review scores are generated for each game; it is simply changing the order that reviews appear on each store page.” See “Update to User Reviews: New Helpfulness System.”
Steam also allows reviews from users who registered an external game key or played a free game, not only from people who bought the game on Steam. Steam displays playtime with a review. Consider that context alongside the review’s reasoning; it is not, on its own, evidence that a particular review is unreliable. Details are in Steam’s review guidance.

A practical way to use Steam reviews when choosing an RPG
- Shortlist by overall reception. Use the Review Score to find games with broadly favorable feedback, not to rank them as if the number measured your personal fit.
- Check the game’s current reception. If Steam shows a recent score, compare it with the overall score. Read recent written reviews as well, especially for games with long Early Access or post-launch histories.
- Check the language breakdown. Confirm which language-specific score Steam is showing, if any, and inspect “See language breakdown” when available.
- Match review details to your priorities. Look for comments about the gameplay, story, stability, performance, translation, connectivity, and price/value that matter to you.
- Compare relevant experiences. A complaint about multiplayer servers may matter less if you plan to play offline; a translation complaint may be central if you intend to play in that language. Consider whether the reviewer’s circumstances resemble yours.
- Be cautious with thin evidence. A small review pool or a score near a category boundary gives you less context than a large set of detailed reviews. Language-specific scores also have higher display thresholds than overall scores.
