Steam Machine runs SteamOS 3, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. Windows games can run through Proton, a compatibility layer shipped with SteamOS, but Proton does not make every Steam title compatible. Compatibility is evaluated game by game, and the Steam Machine badge is the most relevant indicator for this hardware.
Valve’s review distinguishes four outcomes: Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown. Those labels reflect controller access, launcher usability, text entry, Proton or hardware problems, and a default review target of 30 frames per second at 1080p—not a promise that every player will get identical settings or performance.

What SteamOS and Steam Machine are
SteamOS is a Linux-based operating system built around the Steam client. Valve presents it as an open Linux platform in which users can install software and content, while the Steam Client itself remains proprietary and some third-party drivers are included. Steam Machine is a PC designed to run SteamOS 3, which Valve describes as Arch-based.
The practical result is a console-style Steam interface backed by a conventional PC operating system. You can launch games from the gaming interface, then switch to desktop mode for other software and launchers. That flexibility is useful, but it does not turn every Windows game or third-party application into a supported SteamOS title.

How Proton runs Windows games
Most PC games are built for Windows. Proton supplies the translation and compatibility components that let many of those Windows builds run on Linux without the developer shipping a separate Linux port. Valve’s SteamOS page says Proton supported “over 18,000 titles last we checked.” Because the page gives no measurement date, that wording should not be treated as a current 2026 count or as a guarantee for your library.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Proton is a work in progress. A game can fail because of a Proton-specific bug, an anti-cheat or launcher problem, a graphics issue, an input limitation, or a hardware-specific fault. Valve’s review documentation explicitly allows those problems to produce an Unsupported rating. A native Linux build can also be considered: if it fails compatibility checks or has significant issues, Valve tests the Windows build under Proton and submits whichever result is more favorable.
Do all Steam games work on Steam Machine?
No. Steam compatibility is title-specific. Two games from the same publisher can receive different ratings because they use different launchers, anti-cheat systems, controller layouts, graphics features or dependencies. A game that starts successfully may still require a manual setup step, fail to expose all content through a controller, or perform below the review target.
The store and library show a Steam Machine rating when Valve has reviewed the title. Read that rating for the computer you intend to use instead of inferring compatibility from the fact that a game is sold on Steam.

What each badge means
| Badge | Valve’s meaning | What you should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Passes the compatibility checks without configuration work needed to access the game’s functionality. | The reviewed experience should be usable with the expected controller and interface without first changing settings. |
| Playable | Functions, but may require a manual adjustment. | You might need to select a community controller configuration or operate a launcher before playing. |
| Unsupported | Does not function on the device because of Proton incompatibility or a specific hardware issue. | Do not treat it as a minor warning; Valve has identified a blocker in the reviewed configuration. |
| Unknown | The compatibility review is incomplete. | There is not enough Valve review information to classify the customer experience. Unknown is not the same as confirmed incompatibility. |
These labels describe a reviewed experience, not a permanent promise. Game updates, SteamOS updates, Proton changes and launcher revisions can alter behavior after a review.

Valve’s current Steam Deck and Steam Machine Compatibility Review documentation sets criteria beyond whether a game opens.
Controller access and button prompts
A reviewed game should let users reach all content without first changing in-game settings. Button glyphs should match the controller being used, so on-screen prompts do not tell you to press a key that is absent from your pad. Text entry must also be workable. These checks matter for a living-room PC because a title that technically launches can still be impractical if it requires a keyboard for routine actions.
Launchers and unsupported-system warnings
If a game requires a launcher, that launcher must be navigable with a controller. The game should not warn that the device’s hardware or Linux distribution is unsupported. A launcher that opens only after awkward mouse-and-keyboard interaction can therefore prevent a Verified result even when the underlying game engine runs.
Performance review target
The Machine checklist uses a default configuration target of 30 frames per second at 1080p. This is a threshold for the compatibility review, not a benchmark for every title or a promise that your chosen quality settings will produce 30 fps. The documentation does not publish per-game results for every resolution, visual preset or player configuration. If frame rate, resolution or image quality is critical to you, look for title-specific evidence in addition to the badge.

How native Linux builds and Proton are handled
Developers can ship a native Linux build, but a native build is not automatically the version Valve will use for the final rating. Valve’s process considers whether that build passes the required checks. If it fails or has significant issues, Valve tests the Windows build under Proton and submits whichever test results are more favorable.

- Dedicated buttons for quick access to Steam menus
- Capacitive Touch Thumbsticks, gyro sensor, programmable buttons, & more

- Compatible with Steam and Steam Deck
This explains why “Linux version available” and “Machine Verified” are not interchangeable statements. A native build may have missing features, while the Windows build may work better through Proton; the rating reflects the tested customer experience rather than the marketing label attached to the executable.
Is Steam Deck Verified the same as Steam Machine Verified?
No. Valve describes Steam Deck and Steam Machine ratings as independent programs with their own review context. The important one-way relationship in Valve’s documentation is that a Steam Deck Verified title is also Steam Machine Verified. You should still inspect the Machine badge in the store or library for the game you plan to play.
Do not reverse that relationship or assume that a rating earned on one device predicts identical controls, performance or launcher behavior on the other. The Machine checklist has its own hardware and default-performance context, and a game can be affected differently by each device’s input and graphics environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to check a game before installing it
- Open the game’s Steam store page or library entry. Look for the compatibility information associated with Steam Machine, not only a general “works on PC” description.
- Read the exact badge. Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown imply different levels of confidence and different next steps.
- For Playable titles, identify the required action. Valve may indicate a controller configuration or launcher interaction. Plan to perform that step with a mouse, keyboard or community layout if needed.
- Check your own priorities. A game can be technically functional while missing the hands-off, controller-only experience you want in a living room.
- Recheck after major updates. Compatibility is not frozen: game patches, launcher changes, Proton releases and SteamOS updates can improve or degrade behavior.
If a title is Unknown, the honest conclusion is that Valve has not completed its review. Community reports may help you decide whether to experiment, but they do not turn an Unknown badge into an official guarantee.

Playable: prepare for a small setup task
Playable means the core experience functions under review, but a manual adjustment is part of the expected path. Examples in Valve’s definition include selecting a community controller configuration or operating a launcher. Make that adjustment before judging the game: a title that seems broken at first launch may simply be waiting for the required input layout or launcher step.
Unsupported: treat the blocker as substantive
Unsupported indicates that Valve found a Proton incompatibility or a device-specific hardware issue that prevents the game from functioning on the reviewed system. It is not merely a warning that settings need tuning. A future game, Proton or driver update could change the result, but the badge itself does not promise that an immediate workaround exists.

Unknown: separate uncertainty from failure
Unknown means the review is incomplete. It should trigger caution rather than a definitive yes or no. If the game is important to you, wait for a completed rating or verify current, title-specific reports before buying solely for Steam Machine use.
Can you install other launchers and software on SteamOS?
Yes. Valve says SteamOS users can switch to desktop mode and install other launchers and software. That makes SteamOS more flexible than a closed console interface: it is still a Linux PC with access to a desktop environment and installable applications.
Desktop-mode access does not validate every third-party launcher or game. Each launcher can have its own login flow, update mechanism, controller behavior, anti-cheat requirements and Proton compatibility. A title absent from the Steam catalog also will not automatically receive the same Machine review or badge. Consider external software an individual compatibility project, not an extension of the Verified list.
How to interpret performance and hardware claims
The listed Zen 4 processor, RDNA 3 graphics processor, 16 GB of DDR5 memory and 8 GB of GDDR6 video memory describe the planned Steam Machine configuration, but Valve warns that specifications may change before availability. Avoid making purchase or upgrade decisions that depend on an unconfirmed final component.
Likewise, the 30-fps-at-1080p figure belongs to Valve’s review checklist. It does not say that every game runs at 1080p, that every graphics preset reaches 30 fps, or that variable frame rates are impossible. Resolution scaling, visual quality, patches, background software and the game’s own engine can all affect an individual result. Use the badge to understand compatibility and seek game-specific testing when you need a performance guarantee.

A practical decision framework for a Steam library
| Question | Evidence to use | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|
| Will my main games launch? | The Steam Machine badge for each title. | Prioritize Machine Verified games; investigate Playable and Unknown titles individually. |
| Can I play from the couch? | Controller, glyph, text-entry and launcher criteria. | Verified is the strongest signal for a controller-first setup; Playable may require preparation. |
| Will performance meet my target? | The review threshold plus title-specific benchmarks. | Do not convert the 30-fps/1080p criterion into a universal performance promise. |
| Can I use non-Steam software? | Desktop-mode availability and app-specific reports. | Installation is possible, but compatibility must be established separately for each launcher or game. |
| Are the specifications final? | Valve’s current hardware page and its change warning. | Wait for confirmed final specifications if a particular component is decisive. |
The most reliable buying rule is simple: make a list of the games you actually play, check each Machine rating, then investigate any title whose badge or required setup conflicts with how you intend to use the PC. SteamOS and Proton open a large Windows game catalog to Linux, but the rating system exists precisely because “runs on Steam” and “works on this Steam Machine” are different questions.
