A Steam Frame reservation is not a completed preorder or purchase. Valve first places eligible applicants into a randomized queue for either the 256GB or 1TB model. If your status email says you have a reservation, Steam will later send a purchase invitation; you then have 72 hours to pay or the reservation is canceled. A waitlist email means you are behind the initial reservation queue and will be invited only if cancellations or later production create capacity.
The original queue randomization took place on September 17, 2026, at 10 a.m. Pacific. That date has passed, so anyone signing up afterward is placed at the back of the waitlist rather than entering the randomized launch queue. Availability, queue movement and shipping terms can change; check Valve’s current Steam Frame page for your account-specific status before treating an invitation or shipping claim as current.

What a Steam Frame reservation actually gives you
A reservation is a place in Valve’s purchasing process, not proof that money has been charged or that a headset has shipped. Valve’s reservation email means the company has set aside an opportunity to buy a Steam Frame for you. A later email contains the purchase option, and the reservation remains conditional until you complete checkout within the stated 72-hour window.

Where the queue stands after the September 2026 randomization
Valve randomized each launch list on September 17, 2026, at 10 a.m. Pacific. The initial sign-up period was designed to avoid a first-come rush. After that one-time randomization, new sign-ups go to the back of the waitlist. The original launch queue therefore cannot be joined by signing up late.
The date is already past as of October 2026. Valve’s FAQ does not establish how many units remain, whether invitations are currently being sent, an individual’s position, a final shipping date or the availability of any retailer listing. Those details must be checked on the live official page and in the account email tied to the sign-up.
Who could sign up
Account and purchase requirements
Valve required an eligible Steam account in good standing and at least one Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026. The cutoff is a qualification rule for the sign-up system, not a statement that buying another item now will create eligibility.
One entry per household
Valve limited participation to one sign-up per household. It says it uses the payment method, shipping address and other information to identify and remove multiple entries. Creating additional accounts or changing payment details does not provide a legitimate way to obtain extra queue positions.

Model selection at sign-up
Applicants selected either the 256GB or 1TB Steam Frame. Each capacity has its own list. The FAQ does not establish a price difference, performance difference or better odds for either model, so capacity is the only comparison supported by the published reservation information.
Shipping region
Steam automatically assigns an applicant to the list for the shipping region associated with the order. Valve separates lists for North America, the United Kingdom and European Union, and Australia. A position or invitation in one region should not be used to infer availability in another.
How the process works, step by step
- Confirm account eligibility. Use a Steam account in good standing with a qualifying purchase made before April 27, 2026.
- Submit one household sign-up. Valve’s system checks payment, address and related information for duplicate entries.
- Choose one capacity. Select 256GB or 1TB. The choice is assigned to that model’s list.
- Wait for the status email. The message identifies whether you received a reservation position or were placed on the waitlist.
- If reserved, watch for the purchase email. Complete the checkout offered by Valve within 72 hours of that invitation.
- If waitlisted, remain eligible and monitor messages. Cancellations can move people from the waitlist into the reservation queue. Valve also says future production runs will be offered in waitlist order.

How a reservation position can disappear
Missing the 72-hour purchase deadline causes Valve to cancel the reservation and proceed to the next person. Canceling your own reservation has the same practical result: the spot is released. If you no longer want the product, leaving the waitlist also releases your place.
Why a waitlist email is not a rejection
A waitlist status means the initial allocation was already filled ahead of your randomized position. It does not guarantee a later invitation, but it preserves an ordered place behind the reservation queue. Valve says it will exhaust the reservation queue for a particular list before sending purchase emails to that list’s waitlist. An invitation that appears to reach someone earlier may belong to a different capacity or region.

Why Valve randomized sign-ups
Valve says the system was intended to make launch access less dependent on speed and timing. Its FAQ states: “We wanted to create a system that would be less frustrating and more fair for everyone. A launch that starts at a specific day and time tends to reward bots, people with fast internet connections, talented gaming fingers for quick F5/refresh reactions, and those who can schedule their life around that moment.” This is Valve’s explanation for the mechanism, not a published probability study or guarantee of equal availability across models and regions.
Model lists and changes after randomization
The 256GB and 1TB versions are separate queues. After randomization and receipt of a status email, Valve says the selected model cannot be changed. Joining one list therefore does not create an option to switch to the other capacity when a purchase invitation arrives.
Queue places are also tied to the shipping region. Canceling a reservation or leaving the waitlist releases the place rather than preserving it for a different model, address or region.

These regional arrangements mean that reports of invitations, cancellations or stock in another market are not reliable evidence of what a buyer can order at their own address.

What “preorder availability” does and does not mean
It does mean a staged purchase invitation
For a customer in the reservation queue, preorder availability means Valve has reached that position and sent a time-limited opportunity to buy. The purchase is completed only after checkout succeeds. Until then, the customer has a reservation, not a paid order.
It does not establish live inventory
The published FAQ does not report a current unit count, remaining allocation, queue odds or a guaranteed delivery date. It also does not verify stock at independent retailers. Do not treat a search result, social-media post or another region’s email as confirmation that your model is available.
Future production is a separate source of invitations
If the initial reservation queue does not cover everyone, Valve says future production runs will be offered in waitlist order. That statement explains the ordering principle but does not promise a production quantity or date.
Accessories offered during checkout
Valve’s FAQ says its first-party power supply, Accessories Replacement Kit and Ergonomic Accessories Kit are available only to customers purchasing Steam Frame as part of the add-to-cart process. The FAQ does not establish that these items are independently orderable through other retailers, so they should be considered purchase-context options rather than separate availability promises.

Practical checklist for each status
If your email says “reservation queue”
- Keep access to the Steam account and email address used for the sign-up.
- Read the purchase invitation for its exact expiration time.
- Complete payment and shipping details before the 72-hour deadline.
- Do not assume the reservation is an order until checkout confirms the purchase.
If your email says “waitlist”
- Keep the account and contact details current.
- Do not cancel or leave the waitlist unless you want to release the position.
- Understand that cancellations may move you forward, while future production is offered in waitlist order.
- Compare any reported invitation with your own region and selected capacity before drawing conclusions.
If you signed up after September 17
- Expect the sign-up to be placed at the back of the waitlist, subject to the current live terms.
- Do not expect late registration to recreate the randomized launch position.
Common misunderstandings
“I received an email, so I bought one.”
Not necessarily. A reservation or waitlist email reports queue status. Only a completed checkout creates the purchase.
“I can switch from 256GB to 1TB when invited.”
Valve says the model cannot be changed after randomization and the status email. The two capacities use separate lists.
“Someone in another country got an invitation, so mine is coming next.”
Lists are separated by region, and Valve handles Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong through Komodo while South Korean shipping is deferred. Another market’s activity does not reveal your queue position.

It means your randomized position was outside the initial reservation allocation. Cancellations and future production can still lead to an invitation, but timing is not established by the FAQ.
Bottom line
Steam Frame’s system has three distinct stages: an eligibility-checked sign-up, a randomized reservation or waitlist position, and a later purchase invitation. A reservation is conditional for 72 hours; a waitlist position is behind the initial queue; neither status proves a completed purchase. Because the launch randomization has passed and Valve does not publish a live queue position, inventory total or final shipping date in the FAQ, use the current official Steam page and your own account email as the authority for availability.
