Super Heavy returns toward Starbase with a boostback burn, coasts, then uses a landing burn to approach the launch tower. If vehicle and tower checks allow, the tower’s two “chopstick” arms catch and hold the booster. That catch is one possible recovery outcome—not the plan for every test flight.
How the booster returns after separation
- Stage separation: Starship continues its flight while Super Heavy begins its return sequence. SpaceX’s Flight 5 description lists separation before the boostback burn.
- Boostback burn: The booster fires its engines to turn back toward the launch site. SpaceX described the Flight 6 burn as beginning the return to launch site in its Flight 6 account.
- Coast and descend: After boostback, Super Heavy coasts before its landing burn, according to SpaceX’s Flight 5 description. The FAA’s environmental review describes a controlled descent using atmospheric resistance and identifies a return to the tower as an option. It does not provide a full guidance algorithm or exact steering commands.
- Landing burn and catch approach: For a tower recovery, the booster uses a landing burn to make a controlled approach. The tower’s two mechanical arms—often called “chopsticks”—are designed to catch and hold it at the launch site. SpaceX says thousands of distinct vehicle and pad criteria had to be met before the Flight 5 catch attempt.
Why a tower catch is conditional
Reaching the launch site does not automatically authorize a catch. Vehicle and tower conditions must be acceptable, and the flight director can call it off. The Associated Press reported that the flight director assessed the booster and tower before Flight 5’s attempt. In Flight 6, SpaceX said automated tower-hardware health checks triggered an abort, so the catch did not proceed.

Catch return and splashdown are different test profiles
A launch-tower recovery tests the return-to-site and catch sequence. A splashdown profile sends the booster to water instead, allowing a flight to focus on other performance objectives. The destination and recovery plan depend on the mission; a tower catch is not attempted on every Starship test.
That distinction was clear on Flight 14, on September 28, 2026. SpaceX said the boostback burn was intentionally designed to consume the remaining liquid oxygen to test performance ahead of future return-to-launch-site missions. The booster was not slated to return to Starbase and instead splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico, as reported by the Associated Press. See SpaceX’s Flight 14 update and the Associated Press report.

What Flight 5 demonstrated
On October 13, 2024, Flight 5 completed a successful Super Heavy catch at Starbase. The Associated Press reported that the booster returned to the launch pad about seven minutes after liftoff; that timing describes Flight 5, not a guaranteed duration for future returns. The catch showed how the tower can receive and hold the returning booster as part of SpaceX’s reusability approach, described on its reusability page.
