Starlink is a two-way satellite internet service. An outdoor Starlink user terminal communicates with satellites, sends the connection through a supplied cable and power equipment to a Wi-Fi router, and the router connects your phones, computers, televisions and other devices. For a typical Standard 4 X home kit, you need the terminal, cable, power supply, AC cable, kickstand and Router 3; you may need a separate roof, pole or wall mount if the installation site is obstructed.
The most important installation requirement is an unobstructed view of the sky. Trees, roofs, poles and other objects can interrupt the terminal’s view of passing satellites. Starlink’s own guide puts it plainly: “Your Starlink needs a clear view of the sky so it can stay connected with satellites as they move overhead.”

What Starlink does in a home network
At the consumer level, Starlink is best understood as a four-part connection:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Outdoor terminal: The terminal communicates with the Starlink satellite network.
- Starlink cable and power equipment: The cable carries the terminal connection to the indoor equipment, while the power supply and AC cable provide electricity.
- Router: The router turns that incoming connection into a local Wi-Fi network.
- Your devices: Phones, laptops, televisions, game consoles and smart-home devices join the router’s Wi-Fi network.
Starlink’s specifications describe the service as “two-way satellite-based internet” received through a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply and mount. The official consumer material supports this equipment path, but it does not establish a detailed explanation of orbital routing, gateways or inter-satellite traffic for every connection. Those engineering details are not necessary to install or use the service.

When you need a mount
The included kickstand is useful only when the chosen position gives the terminal the required sky view and remains stable. If a yard, balcony or other ground-level position is blocked by trees, a roofline or nearby structures, Starlink’s obstruction guidance suggests raising the terminal on an appropriate roof, pole or wall mount. A tower or pole installation can also be used when appropriate.
Mount compatibility depends on the terminal generation, mounting surface and local building and electrical requirements. Do not assume that a mount designed for one Starlink model fits another. If you cannot safely drill, climb, route the cable or seal a roof penetration, Starlink advises seeking professional assistance. See Starlink’s obstruction guidance before buying an accessory.
Why a clear view of the sky matters
The terminal must see enough open sky to remain connected as satellites move overhead. Obstructions can produce interruptions rather than simply reducing a speed-test number. A location that appears open from one angle may still have a tree canopy, chimney, pole or roof edge in the terminal’s viewing area.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck a proposed site before permanent installation
- Install the Starlink app on your phone or tablet.
- Open the app’s obstruction tool and grant the requested camera permissions.
- Stand where you intend to place the terminal and scan the sky as the app directs.
- Move around the property and compare potential locations, including elevated positions.
- Choose the site with the clearest practical view, then plan a safe cable route and access to power.
Use the app’s result as a placement decision, not as a guarantee of a particular speed. If the scan shows recurring obstructions, relocate the terminal or plan a compatible elevated mount before fixing anything permanently. The Starlink Install Guide also illustrates the clear-sky requirement.

How to install and connect Starlink
The exact connectors and alignment behavior vary by hardware generation, but the Standard 4 X process follows this order.
- Install the app: Download and open the Starlink app before unpacking the terminal so you can check the proposed position and follow the current model-specific instructions.
- Place the terminal: Set it on the supplied kickstand or on a compatible mount in the clearest safe location you identified with the obstruction tool. Keep the terminal stable and protect the cable from sharp bends, crushing and trip hazards.
- Connect the terminal cable: Plug the supplied Starlink cable into the terminal and into the router port marked for the antenna, following the orientation shown in the guide. Do not substitute an unverified cable.
- Connect power: Attach the power supply and AC power cable as shown for your kit, then plug the AC cable into a suitable outlet.
- Open the app and follow setup: The app reports connection status and presents installation or alignment prompts for the terminal model.
- Align when prompted: Standard and Mini users should use the app’s alignment tool. Standard Actuated and Performance (Gen 1) terminals automatically level themselves to search for satellites, so they do not use the same manual alignment instruction.
- Join the temporary Wi-Fi network: On your phone or computer, select the
STARLINKWi-Fi network shown during setup. - Set your network details: In the app, create the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password you want household devices to use.
- Wait for initialization: The connection may take a few minutes, and the system may install software updates after the first connection. Keep power connected while this completes.
- Test from the intended room: Check that the router’s Wi-Fi reaches the areas where you need service. If coverage is weak, improve router placement or use networking equipment supported by your model rather than moving the outdoor terminal into an obstructed position.
The “How do I set up Starlink?” support article contains the current model-specific sequence. Follow the instructions for the terminal you actually own; a universal “the dish always self-aligns” instruction is incorrect.
How fast is Starlink?
Starlink publishes typical land-user ranges of 25–220 Mbps download, 5–20 Mbps upload and 25–60 ms latency. It notes that latency can exceed 100 ms in some remote locations. These are vendor-published expectations, not an independent test or a guarantee for your address.
| Metric | Starlink-published typical range on land | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Download | 25–220 Mbps | Actual results vary by location, time of day, network usage and service-plan priority; speeds can be lower during high usage. |
| Upload | 5–20 Mbps | The range is typical, not guaranteed for a particular household. |
| Latency | 25–60 ms | Some remote locations can exceed 100 ms. |
Think of these figures as a planning range. Your result depends on local demand, the plan available at your address, the terminal’s obstruction level, Wi-Fi conditions inside the home and the time of day. A speed test over Wi-Fi measures the complete local connection, not only the satellite link.

Plan labels, priority policies and availability change by market. Before selecting a plan, verify the current terms for your service address on Starlink’s specifications page and the local order flow. Avoid treating a range published for one region or date as a promise in another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a location, mount and installation method
Use the included stand when the site is open and safe
A clear ground-level site can be the simplest installation: place the terminal on the kickstand, connect the cable, and keep the router indoors. This avoids roof work and makes future relocation easier. The location still needs stable support, a manageable cable route and protection from vehicles, foot traffic and standing water.
Choose an elevated mount when obstructions remain
If the obstruction scan shows trees or structures, raising the terminal can improve its view. Select a roof, pole or wall mount made for the exact terminal generation and the surface being used. Consider wind loading, waterproofing, cable entry, grounding and local permission requirements. An elevated position is not automatically better if it creates an unsafe installation or an excessively long, poorly protected cable run.

Roof access, tall poles, exterior electrical work and sealed cable penetrations can create fall, water-intrusion and electrical risks. Starlink’s obstruction guidance recommends professional assistance when a user cannot safely complete the installation. The appropriate installer depends on your location; confirm that the person understands the terminal model and local requirements.

What can interrupt service?
- Obstructions: Trees, poles, roofs and other objects in the terminal’s view can cause interruptions. Re-scan with the app and relocate or elevate the terminal.
- Incorrect alignment procedure: Standard and Mini use the app’s alignment tool, while Standard Actuated and Performance (Gen 1) automatically level. Follow the model-specific instruction.
- Loose or damaged cabling: Check both ends of the supplied cable and inspect the route for crushing, sharp bends or water exposure. Reconnect only with power handled as the guide directs.
- Power interruption: Confirm that the AC cable and power supply are connected and that the outlet works. Allow time for the system to restart and update.
- High demand or plan priority: Starlink says speeds can fall during high usage and vary with service-plan priority. A slower result is not automatically a hardware fault.
- Weak indoor Wi-Fi: If the terminal is connected but one room has poor service, test close to the router. Improve indoor router placement or use compatible networking equipment instead of changing the outdoor sky position.
The app’s connection status and obstruction information should be your first diagnostic tools. Record whether the problem affects every device, only Wi-Fi range or the satellite link itself before changing hardware.
What to verify before ordering
- Confirm Starlink service availability and the plan terms for your exact address and country.
- Identify the terminal generation and compare the advertised box contents with the relevant setup guide.
- Use the app’s obstruction check before committing to a permanent location.
- Decide whether the included kickstand is adequate or whether a compatible roof, pole or wall mount is required.
- Measure the distance between the proposed terminal and indoor power/router location, allowing for a safe cable route.
- Check whether you can perform the installation safely or need a qualified installer.
- Read the current local terms rather than relying on an old price, speed promise or plan name.
Starlink equipment questions that cause confusion
Do I need a separate modem?
The Standard 4 X equipment list identifies a terminal, cable, power equipment, kickstand and Router 3. It does not describe a separate consumer modem that you must purchase for the basic setup. The router is the supplied indoor network device.
Can I put the terminal indoors?
The setup guidance is built around placing the terminal where it has a clear view of the sky. An indoor position behind a roof, wall or other obstruction is therefore unsuitable for reliable service. Use the obstruction tool to find an outdoor position.
Recommended Free Tools
Does every Starlink terminal move or self-align?
No. Alignment behavior differs by model. Standard and Mini users should use the app’s alignment tool; Standard Actuated and Performance (Gen 1) automatically level to search for satellites.
Will the published maximum speed be available all day?
No. The published ranges are typical expectations, not guarantees. Location, time of day, network usage and plan priority can change the result, and remote locations may have latency above 100 ms.
Are mounts included?
The Standard 4 X guide lists a kickstand, not a universal roof, pole or wall mount. Elevated mounts are conditional accessories for sites that cannot achieve a clear view at ground level, and compatibility must be checked against the terminal and surface.
