Starfield mods are optional additions that change or extend the game. For the official, in-game route, Bethesda calls these additions Creations. They can add missions, gear, skins, weapons and other content through Starfield’s Creations menu. Before installing one, check its current requirements, platform and game-version notes, and whether its listing is marked Achievement Friendly. Bethesda says ordinary Creations disable achievements, and removing a Creation does not guarantee that every change to a save will be reversed.
What “mods” mean in Starfield
In everyday conversation, “Starfield mods” can mean any player-made or third-party change to the game. Bethesda’s official in-game channel is named Creations. A Creation is not one fixed kind of modification: Bethesda’s June 9, 2024 Starfield update describes a range of optional content available from the game’s menu.

This distinction matters because you should not assume that every Creation has the same installation behavior, achievement effect or compatibility. The catalog is made up of individual entries, and those entries can change as Bethesda updates the game or a creator updates an item.
How the official Creations route works
Find content in Starfield
Bethesda’s June 2024 update says Creations are available through Starfield’s in-game menu. Start the game, open the Creations menu, and browse or search the catalog. Open an item’s detail page before selecting it. Read the description rather than treating the title or screenshots as a complete specification.

The listing is the place to establish what the Creation actually changes. Look for its content description, stated requirements, supported platform and any achievement-related label. Availability and labels are not permanent guarantees: a catalog entry can be revised, and a game update can alter compatibility.
Install only after checking the item
- Open the item’s detail page. Confirm that it is the Creation you intended to use and identify whether it adds a mission, equipment, a cosmetic change or another type of content.
- Read the requirements. Note any required game content, other Creations or specific game-build information stated by the creator or Bethesda.
- Check the achievement label. Bethesda Support currently states that Creations disable achievements unless they are tagged Achievement Friendly.
- Decide which save should receive it. If the save is important, consider whether optional content and the possibility of achievement restrictions are acceptable for that playthrough.
- Use the catalog’s install control. Follow the current on-screen prompt. The exact wording and availability can vary by platform and game version.
- Load the intended character only after installation completes. If the item’s description gives a specific activation step, follow that instruction instead of assuming the content appears immediately.
The official route does not require the Creation Kit. Bethesda describes the Creation Kit as a separate Steam download for people who want to make Starfield content. It is a creator tool, not a prerequisite for a player who is downloading a Creation from the in-game catalog.
Achievements: the check that can change your decision
What Bethesda’s current rule says
Bethesda Support’s guidance is direct: “Creations will disable achievements in Starfield unless they are tagged as ‘Achievement Friendly.’” Treat that as an item-level check. Installing one Creation without that tag can affect the achievement status of the playthrough, even if another Creation in the same library has a different status.

Do not infer the status from a creator’s reputation, the item’s price or its category. Open the current listing and look for the exact Achievement Friendly designation before installing.
What changed with Verified Creator releases
Bethesda’s November 19, 2024 update introduced an achievement-friendly option for certain Creations released through its Verified Creators program. That announcement does not make every Creation achievement friendly; it describes an eligibility path for some releases. The label on the specific item remains the deciding evidence.

Why an old save may not recover achievements
Bethesda also states: “Achievements will not retroactively unlock on previous game saves with Creations, even if those Creations are now achievement friendly.” In practical terms, a later label change should not be treated as a reset button for a save that already used Creations. If achievements are a priority, check the status before the first installation on the save you plan to use.
How to disable or uninstall a Creation
Use the in-game Library
Bethesda’s support procedure for removing a Creation is an in-game menu flow:
- Open Starfield’s Creations menu.
- Open your Library and locate the Creation.
- Select the item and choose Delete.
Bethesda’s support page also says you can disable the Creation instead of deleting it. Disabling is useful when you want to test whether an item is involved in a problem without immediately removing its files. Use the option presented in the current Library interface.
Return to an original save when necessary
Bethesda warns that Creations are used at the player’s own risk. Its support guidance describes returning to an original save by using Select Character in the Load menu after disabling Creations. This is a recovery route, not a promise that every effect of a Creation will disappear from every save.
A mission already started, an item already placed in a container, or another change already written to a save may not behave exactly as it did before installation. The official documentation does not promise universal reversal. If a save matters, keep a separate unmodified save before experimenting and avoid overwriting it with the modified playthrough.

Risks, compatibility and what the official guidance does not promise
Compatibility is specific, not universal
There is no single rule that proves every Creation works on every platform, edition or game build. Compatibility can depend on the individual item, the platform, the source and the installed game version. The official material available for this guide does not provide a complete, current platform-by-platform matrix.

For each item, check the current listing for supported platform information, requirements and version notes. If those details are absent or ambiguous, treat that as a reason to postpone installation or ask the creator for clarification rather than assuming compatibility.
Do not assume a safe load order
The official support pages reviewed here do not establish a universal load-order procedure, a guaranteed backup method or a rule that makes every combination of Creations safe. Avoid presenting a generic order as an official fix. If a specific Creation documents an order or dependency, follow that item’s current instructions.
Understand the risk notice
Bethesda’s support documentation says players use Creations at their own risk. That warning covers more than a failed download. A Creation can affect the behavior or contents of a save, and disabling or deleting it may not undo changes that have already been recorded. The safest interpretation is to test optional content on a separate character or a copy of a valuable save, while preserving the original.

Use this checklist for every Creation, even if you have installed other items successfully:

- Purpose: Can you state exactly what the item adds or changes?
- Requirements: Have you read every requirement in the current listing?
- Achievement status: Is the listing explicitly marked Achievement Friendly, or are you willing to play without achievements on this save?
- Platform and build: Does the item identify support for your platform and current Starfield build?
- Save choice: Are you installing on a disposable test character, a dedicated modded character or a valuable main save?
- Removal plan: Do you know how to find the item in Creations > Library if you need to disable or delete it?
- Recovery point: Can you return to an original save if the item causes a problem?
If any answer is unclear, do not treat installation as routine. The catalog’s description and current Bethesda guidance are more reliable than assumptions based on another Creation.

The Creation does not appear in the game
Reopen the item’s listing and check whether it requires another Creation, a particular game version or a manual activation step. Confirm that the item is enabled in your Library. If the listing does not explain the behavior, use its current support information rather than guessing at a universal fix.
The game behaves differently after installation
Record which Creation was installed most recently, then disable that item from Creations > Library and test with an original save through Load > Select Character, following Bethesda’s documented recovery route. Do not overwrite the original save while diagnosing the issue. If disabling one item does not resolve the problem, the official documentation does not provide a universal diagnosis; review each installed item’s requirements and contact the relevant support channel.
Achievements are no longer available
Check the current achievement label on every Creation used by the save. Bethesda’s rule applies unless the item is tagged Achievement Friendly. If the save previously used a Creation, do not expect achievements to unlock later merely because that item has since received the label; Bethesda specifically rules out retroactive unlocking on previous saves with Creations.

Use the Library’s Delete command after disabling the Creation if that is the sequence shown by your interface. Keep in mind that deletion removes the catalog item from the installed list; it is not a guarantee that changes already written into a save are undone. Return to an original save when the issue requires a clean state.
Official Creations versus creator tools
Players and creators often use the word “mod” for different activities. Downloading a Creation from Starfield’s in-game menu is a player action. Building content is a separate activity. Bethesda’s June 9, 2024 update identifies the Starfield Creation Kit as a separate Steam download for people interested in making content. You do not need that kit merely to install a Creation through the game’s official menu.
This distinction also explains why a tutorial that discusses authoring tools may not answer a player’s installation question. For downloading, start with the in-game Creations menu and the item’s own requirements. For authoring, consult the current Creation Kit documentation and workflow instead.
What to check when catalog information changes
The Starfield Creations catalog is live and can change. Names, descriptions, achievement labels and availability may be updated, while a Starfield game update may alter support. Recheck the item immediately before installing rather than relying on an old video, screenshot or forum post. The current listing should be your authority for that item’s requirements; Bethesda’s current support pages should be your authority for achievement and removal behavior.

Bottom line for a safe first installation
Use the in-game Creations menu, inspect the individual listing, and decide first whether the save can accept the achievement and compatibility trade-offs. Bethesda’s official rule is that Creations disable achievements unless they carry the Achievement Friendly tag; a later tag change does not retroactively unlock achievements on an earlier save that used Creations. Keep an original save, know the Creations > Library path for disabling or deleting an item, and treat removal as a recovery option rather than a guarantee that every saved change will be reversed.
