In the U.S. Starbucks Rewards program, Green members’ unredeemed Stars expire six months after they are earned. A qualifying action in the calendar month before an expiring batch’s original deadline can extend those Stars by one month. Maintained Gold and Reserve members’ Stars do not expire. Starbucks publishes six redemption levels—25, 60, 100, 200, 300 and 400 Stars—with different eligible categories and spending caps. Redeeming Stars uses your balance but does not reduce the Stars you have earned toward Gold or Reserve status.
What changed in Starbucks Rewards in 2026?
Starbucks launched its reworked U.S. Rewards structure on March 10, 2026. It has three levels—Green, Gold and Reserve—and calculates earning and status progress separately from the balance you can spend on Rewards.

Starbucks said its program had 35.5 million 90-day active members in the company’s first quarter of fiscal 2026. That is Starbucks’ figure for that stated quarter, not a current October 2026 membership count.

How Stars are earned and how the three levels work
Your level determines the published base rate at which qualifying spending earns Stars:
| Level | Stars earned per dollar | Stars needed for qualification | Qualification period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green | 1 Star | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| Gold | 1.2 Stars | 500 Stars | 12 months |
| Reserve | 1.7 Stars | 2,500 Stars | 12 months |
Gold qualification requires 500 Stars earned during the relevant 12-month period. Reserve qualification requires 2,500 Stars earned during that period. Starbucks’ FAQ says the status counter includes all Stars earned in the period, including Bonus Stars.
Balance versus status progress
There are two different numbers to understand:
- Redeemable balance: Stars currently available to exchange for a Reward.
- Status progress: Stars earned during the applicable qualification period toward Gold or Reserve.
When you redeem a Reward, the Stars leave your redeemable balance, but the redemption does not subtract from your status progress. For example, if you earned 520 Stars in a qualification period and then spent 200 on a Reward, the status calculation still reflects the 520 earned Stars, subject to the program’s period and terms.

Bonus Stars and reload bonuses
Starbucks describes qualifying digital Starbucks Card reload bonuses of 10 Bonus Stars for a reload of $30 or more and 25 Bonus Stars for a reload of $50 or more, subject to the program terms. Because Bonus Stars count toward status qualification, a qualifying bonus can affect the status counter as well as the balance available for redemption. Check the offer’s terms before relying on a reload bonus.

Reusable-cup earning
Starbucks says Rewards members earn double Stars on their transaction when they use a clean personal cup at participating cafés. The offer is a program rule, not a guarantee that every café or transaction qualifies; confirm eligibility at the café and in current terms.
When do Starbucks Stars expire?
Green members
For Green members, unredeemed Stars expire six months after they are earned. Expiration applies to the individual batch of Stars, so different earning dates can produce different deadlines.
Gold and Reserve members
Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire while you maintain the applicable status. If your level changes, the expiration rules associated with your current status and the applicable terms matter, so rely on the date displayed in your account rather than assuming a past level continues indefinitely.
Use the account date, not a guess
Starbucks’ public FAQ does not describe every account-specific edge case or exactly how every extension is displayed. Open your Starbucks account and use the expiration information shown there, along with the current U.S. Rewards terms, when deciding whether to redeem or extend Stars.

How to extend expiring Green Stars by one month
A Green member can extend Stars that are approaching their original expiration by one month. The action must happen during the calendar month immediately before the batch’s original deadline. Starbucks’ FAQ says this extension can be repeated.
Qualifying actions
During that preceding calendar month, complete one of these at a participating café or through the specified digital channel:
- Make a qualifying Star-earning purchase at a participating café.
- Redeem a Reward at a participating café.
- Digitally reload at least $30 to a Starbucks Card through Starbucks’ digital channels. The FAQ’s footnote specifies the app for the reload route; check the live terms for the currently accepted channel.
Calendar example
Starbucks gives this example: if a batch is due to expire on April 1, qualifying activity in March can extend it to May 1. The relevant window is the calendar month before the original date; activity after the original deadline is not a way to revive already expired Stars.
Transactions that do not qualify for the purchase route
The FAQ excludes Starbucks Card purchases, alcohol and delivery services from the qualifying-purchase route. Do not assume that any charge connected with Starbucks creates an extension. The transaction must meet the program’s definition of qualifying activity.

A practical extension checklist
- Confirm that you are Green and identify the batch’s original expiration date.
- Mark the preceding calendar month as the action window.
- Choose a qualifying café purchase, an eligible in-café Reward redemption or the required digital reload.
- Keep the receipt or digital record until the account reflects the activity.
- Recheck the expiration displayed in your account; account-specific handling is not fully described in the public FAQ.
What can you get with Starbucks Stars?
Starbucks publishes six U.S. redemption tiers. Each tier specifies a category and, for most tiers, a maximum dollar value. The cap is the maximum value covered by the Reward, not a promise that every item, café or location will qualify.
| Stars required | Published Reward category | Maximum value or condition |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | Drink customization, such as an added espresso shot, syrup or cold foam | Up to $1 |
| 60 | Discount on an item | $2 off an item; gift cards excluded |
| 100 | Eligible brewed coffee or tea, bakery item, packaged snack and other listed choices | Up to $6 |
| 200 | Eligible handcrafted beverage or hot breakfast | Up to $10 |
| 300 | Eligible sandwich, protein box or packaged coffee | Up to $16 |
| 400 | Select Starbucks merchandise | Up to $20 |
Paying above a tier’s cap
Starbucks says you may pay the difference when the order costs more than the tier’s dollar cap and you still want to redeem the Reward. For instance, a qualifying item priced above the applicable cap can require an additional payment rather than being automatically excluded. The item must still fit the tier’s category and all other restrictions.
Why there is no single cash value for a Star
A Star does not have one guaranteed cash equivalent. The result depends on the tier, the item selected, its price, the cap, whether the location participates and whether exclusions apply. Starbucks’ published materials provide thresholds and caps, not an independent, universal cents-per-Star valuation. Treat the table as a description of what each Reward can cover, not as a promise of a fixed return on every Star.

Rewards are limited to participating cafés, and eligible items can vary. The 60-Star discount excludes gift cards. Other category, product, location and offer restrictions can apply. Check the item and redemption eligibility in the Starbucks app or the current Rewards terms before placing an order, particularly for merchandise, packaged products and limited-time offers.

How to decide whether to redeem or save Stars
Redeem before a Green expiration date
If you are Green and a batch is nearing its six-month deadline, compare the available Reward with the effort and restrictions of an extension. Redeeming uses Stars but does not harm status progress. If you do not need a Reward, a qualifying action in the preceding calendar month can move the original deadline by one month, and Starbucks says that process can be repeated.
Choose the tier that matches your purchase
Use the product category and cap together. A 25-Star customization Reward is designed for an add-on, while a 200-Star Reward applies to an eligible handcrafted beverage or hot breakfast. A 400-Star Reward is for select merchandise, not a general-purpose discount. Spending more than the cap can be sensible only when the item is one you already want and the additional payment is acceptable.
Do not spend solely to protect status
Because redemption does not reduce qualification progress, you do not need to hold a balance of unredeemed Stars to preserve progress toward Gold or Reserve. The relevant status measure is what you earned during the qualification period.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing six months with the end of a calendar year: Green expiration is tied to when Stars were earned, not a universal annual reset.
- Acting in the wrong month: The one-month extension action belongs in the calendar month before the original expiration date.
- Assuming every purchase qualifies: Starbucks Card purchases, alcohol and delivery services are excluded from the qualifying-purchase route in the FAQ.
- Expecting redemption to lower status progress: Redeemed Stars still count as earned Stars for the qualification period under the published FAQ.
- Treating a cap as a guaranteed item price: The cap is the maximum covered value; participating locations and eligible products still apply.
- Using a partner or linked account as a substitute for Starbucks terms: Starbucks names Delta SkyMiles and Marriott Bonvoy as eligible linked loyalty programs, but the cited announcement does not establish current conversion rates, detailed linking rules or affiliate availability. Verify live terms with Starbucks and the partner before relying on a linked-account benefit.
Key takeaways for U.S. members
- Green Stars expire six months after earning.
- Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire while the applicable status is maintained.
- A qualifying action in the calendar month before a Green batch’s original expiration can extend it by one month; Starbucks says extensions can repeat.
- The six published redemption levels are 25, 60, 100, 200, 300 and 400 Stars.
- Redemption categories and maximum covered values differ by tier, and you may pay above a cap when the Reward and location qualify.
- Green earns 1 Star per dollar, Gold 1.2 and Reserve 1.7; Gold requires 500 earned Stars and Reserve 2,500 in a 12-month qualification period.
- Redeeming Stars reduces the redeemable balance, not status progress.
These rules describe the U.S. program as documented on October 13, 2026. Starbucks can change mechanics, offers, participating cafés, eligible products and partner terms, so confirm the live terms and the expiration shown in your account before acting.
