A sportsbook bonus bet is promotional credit, not cash in your account. In the operator examples below, a winning bonus bet pays winnings only: its stake is not returned. A cash bet ordinarily returns the stake plus profit when it wins. Before placing a bonus bet, check its expiry, eligible markets, odds requirements and settlement rules in the live offer terms; these vary by operator and location.
What is a sportsbook bonus bet?
A bonus bet is promotional credit issued by a sportsbook for wagering under specified conditions. It is separate from your cash balance, and the rules attached to it may limit when and how you can use it. UK Gambling Commission consumer guidance says operators should make clear whether a customer is using their own money or restricted bonus funds: UK Gambling Commission guidance on bonuses and free bets.

Do not assume every promotion labelled “bonus” works the same way. A bonus bet or free-bet token may have different rules from bonus cash, which may be subject to wagering requirements. Read the offer terms before accepting it.

How does a bonus bet differ from a cash bet?
| Question | Cash bet | Bonus bet in the cited examples |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the stake come from? | Your cash balance. | Promotional credit held separately from cash, as described in UK Gambling Commission consumer guidance. |
| What is credited after a win? | Ordinarily, the stake plus profit, subject to the sportsbook’s settlement rules. | Winnings only when the bonus stake is excluded. DraftKings US says the stake is not included in potential winnings; Sportsbet Australia illustrates the same payout treatment. |
| Can the stake itself be withdrawn? | It is your money, subject to account and bet settlement rules. | DraftKings US says its bonus bet cannot be withdrawn and must be played once. This is an operator-specific rule, not a universal one. |
| What restrictions apply? | Bet rules and local regulation. | The particular promotion’s terms, which may cover expiry, qualifying wagers and play-through. |

Why is the payout smaller with a bonus bet?
In the cited examples, the sportsbook does not return the promotional stake as part of the winnings. That means a winning bonus bet at the same odds and stake amount produces less credited value than a cash bet whose payout includes its stake.
Sportsbet Australia gives this decimal-odds example: a $20 bonus bet at odds of 10 has a gross return of $200. Subtract the $20 bonus stake, and the winnings credited are $180. The calculation is:

How do you use a bonus bet?
- Read the offer terms before accepting. Confirm that it is a bonus bet or token rather than bonus cash, and note any qualifying deposit or cash bet, expiry, odds threshold and eligible markets.
- Check the account balance and wager funding. Confirm that the promotional credit is available and that the bet slip is using the bonus bet rather than your cash balance.
- Select an eligible wager and apply the credit. Follow the sportsbook’s bet-slip instructions; check whether the whole credit must be used at once or can be split, and whether combining it with other funds is allowed.
- Review the amount and settlement terms before placing the wager. Check what happens to the credit if the wager is void, pushed, settled as a dead heat or canceled, and whether any winnings are subject to further requirements.
- Check the settled account balances. Confirm how the operator credited the result and whether the promotion has any remaining conditions.
These are checks, not universal restrictions. DraftKings US says its bonus bets must be played once and before expiry; other sportsbooks and promotions may differ. Sources: DraftKings Help Center (US) and UK Gambling Commission consumer guidance.
What should you check in the terms?
- Is the offer a bonus bet or free-bet token, or bonus cash with different conditions?
- What is the exact expiry date and time, including the time zone?
- Which sports and markets qualify? Is there a minimum or maximum odds threshold?
- Must the full amount be used in one wager, or can it be split or combined?
- What happens after a void, push, dead heat or canceled event, and how soon is any returned credit available?
- Are winnings cashable immediately, or do they have additional wagering requirements?
- Must you make a qualifying cash bet or deposit? Can you decline the promotion or withdraw from it?
- Do local laws or regulator guidance affect the offer?
These questions identify terms to verify; they are not restrictions that apply to every sportsbook. DraftKings’ published conditions describe that operator’s offer, while UK Gambling Commission guidance advises consumers to check restrictions before accepting bonuses.

What happens if a bonus bet pushes or expires?
There is no universal answer in the cited sources. Check the individual offer’s rules for voids, pushes, dead heats and cancellations, including whether the token is returned and how long that takes. Also check the exact expiry date and time. DraftKings US says its bonus bet must be played before expiry, but that rule should not be assumed to apply to other operators or promotions. What UK bonus-bet rules apply in 2026?
For Great Britain, the UK Gambling Commission’s rewards-and-bonuses code in force from 19 January 2026 requires clear, transparent, fair and accessible terms. It caps applicable wagering requirements at ten times and prohibits mixing multiple gambling product types within an incentive. These are rules within the Commission’s scope, not worldwide sportsbook terms. See the UK Gambling Commission rewards-and-bonuses code.

The ten-times limit is distinct from any individual offer’s other restrictions. In a 2025 explanation, the Commission illustrated that a £10 bonus with a 50-times wagering requirement would mean £500 in wagering; that example explains the arithmetic and is not a current permissible UK offer. The Commission’s 2026 code sets the applicable cap at ten times. See the Commission’s announcement of the changes.
Does a bonus bet make a wager risk-free?
No. Promotional credit does not make the outcome safe or profitable. UK Gambling Commission research reports that promotional offers can confuse consumers about the difference between personal money and bonus funds, and influence how they judge risk and potential value. Treat the credit as restricted and the outcome as uncertain; do not rely on descriptions such as “free money,” “risk-free” or “guaranteed profit.” UK Gambling Commission research on consumer understanding of promotional offers.
