SparkLend’s documented governance attack surface centers on the PoolAddressesProvider: it controls the Pool’s implementation pathway and connects the market’s key components. Configuration and emergency controls are privileged, even though ordinary lending actions are permissionless. Spark’s documentation describes who is intended to hold these powers and how they work; it does not establish the current on-chain owners, implementations, or role holders.
What is the SparkLend governance attack surface?
For a lending protocol, the governance attack surface is the set of authorities and contract pathways that can change how the system operates. In SparkLend’s documented architecture, that includes upgrading the Pool, changing component addresses or market settings, managing privileged roles, and freezing or pausing markets. These powers matter because an unauthorized or mistaken change could affect users even if the lending contracts themselves continue to operate as designed.

Spark describes the Pool as the main entry point for lending operations and an upgradeable proxy. The PoolAddressesProvider manages the Pool’s implementation pointer and serves as a central registry for the Pool, configurator, price oracle, ACL manager, and other components. Spark’s documentation says the provider controls proxy implementations and market configuration. Pool documentation · PoolAddressesProvider documentation

Who can upgrade or configure SparkLend?
The documented upgrade route runs through the PoolAddressesProvider: updating the Pool’s implementation pointer changes which implementation the proxy uses. The provider’s central registry role also makes changes to critical component addresses and market configuration important governance-sensitive actions. Spark’s Pool documentation describes privileged checks for PoolConfigurator operations and Pool admin functions; ordinary users do not gain those powers merely by being able to use the Pool. Pool documentation · PoolAddressesProvider documentation
- Implementation changes: Review who can change the Pool implementation pointer through the provider.
- Component addresses: Review who can update registry entries such as the configurator, oracle, and ACL manager.
- Market settings and roles: Review the privileged paths for changing parameters and access-control assignments.
- Authority over the provider: Establish who can change the provider’s owner or otherwise exercise its authority in the deployed contracts.
The cited architecture pages do not establish the current values for those owners, pointers, component addresses, or role assignments. A live assessment therefore needs to inspect the Ethereum contracts and their current configuration rather than infer deployed control from documentation alone.
Which SparkLend actions are permissionless?
Spark documents ordinary supply, withdrawal, borrowing, repayment, liquidation, and flash-loan operations as permissionless. This means users do not need a governance role to perform those standard market actions, subject to the protocol’s applicable rules and limits. It does not make upgrades, configuration changes, or administrative functions permissionless: the Pool documentation describes access checks for PoolConfigurator operations, Pool admin functions, and bridge functions. How can markets be frozen or paused?
Spark’s Freezer repository describes emergency controls for freezing or pausing all markets or an individual market. It documents two execution routes, but the repository’s description of an intended setup should not be treated as verification of the roles or wiring on a live deployment. SparkLend Freezer repository
Governance-spell route
Token-based governance can vote for a pre-deployed spell to become the Chief’s hat; once that happens, the spell can be executed. The repository presents this as one route for invoking the Freezer controls. SparkLend Freezer repository
Authorized multisig route
An authorized multisig ward can call the Freezer functions directly after meeting its quorum. The repository describes an expected configuration in which the Spark SubDAO Proxy is the owner, MCD Chief is the authority, and no more than one SAFE multisig is a ward. Those are repository-described assumptions, not independently verified current deployment facts. SparkLend Freezer repository

Overrides and recovery authority
The repository says MKR holders can override and de-authorize the multisig without a GSM delay. It also describes the SubDAO Proxy, behind a delay, as able to override a non-delay vote and the multisig. This provides a documented governance recovery path, while making the actual role configuration and authority wiring central questions for any assessment of practical checks and balances. What risk controls shape the consequences of governance decisions?
Spark’s product documentation describes several controls that can bound particular exposures or response scenarios. They are not proof that every governance, oracle, implementation, or operational failure is prevented. SparkLend documentation
- Per-asset caps: Supply caps and borrow caps limit specified asset exposures.
- Rate limits: Limits on specified flows can constrain how quickly certain exposures change.
- Borrowing-power reductions: Spark describes the ability to reduce borrowing power to zero without making forced liquidation the first response.
- Peg-deviation killswitch: For listed pegged collateral, a configured threshold breach halts new borrowing.
These controls do not replace review of who can set or change parameters, how the controls are configured, or how their triggers behave in the deployed system.

How does SparkLend’s documented oracle aggregation work?
Spark documents an aggregation design using RedStone, Chainlink, and Chronicle. When all three values are valid and fresh, the design uses the median; with two valid values, it uses the average; and it includes a single-feed fallback. SparkLend documentation
Using multiple sources can reduce reliance on any one feed when the multi-source aggregation conditions are met. The single-feed fallback means that a reviewer should also establish what triggers fallback, which feed can be used, and what the live configuration is. The documented design does not establish that one compromised oracle can never affect prices.

Spark documents a variable liquidation close factor. When a borrower’s health factor is below 1 but above 0.95, up to 50% of the debt may be covered; at or below 0.95, up to 100% may be covered. These are described protocol parameters, not governance safeguards. They matter because oracle and parameter changes can affect a borrower’s health factor and therefore the portion of debt that may be covered in liquidation. SparkLend documentation
What should an on-chain governance review verify?
The architecture points to a focused set of checks. Before describing any authority as active, verify the deployed contracts and current role holders on the relevant chain.
- Read the current PoolAddressesProvider owner and determine who can change that authority.
- Check the Pool implementation pointer and identify who can update it.
- Inspect the provider’s current component addresses, including the configurator, oracle, and ACL manager.
- Inspect current access-control roles and identify who can change market parameters or perform Pool admin operations.
- Verify whether the Freezer contract is deployed and wired as described, including its owner, authority, wards, quorum, and override paths.
- Check the live risk-control and oracle configuration rather than assuming the documented thresholds and fallback behavior are unchanged.
This article covers SparkLend’s documented Ethereum architecture. Spark’s product documentation says its Gnosis Chain deployment was deprecated in September 2026, while suppliers could still withdraw. The chain and deployment therefore need to be specified when assessing current controls. SparkLend documentation
