How SpaceX’s Launch Tower Catches the Super Heavy Booster

SpaceX catches the Super Heavy booster by guiding it back to Starbase, slowing it with a final landing burn, and holding it beside the launch tower while two giant arms—nicknamed the “chopsticks”—close around the vehicle. If flight controllers declare both the booster and tower ready, the arms grip Super Heavy above the pad instead of letting it touch down on legs.

The method is designed to return the booster directly to the launch site for rapid reuse. It demands a precise, low-speed hover next to the tower, and the catch is attempted only after a real-time go/no-go decision.

What the Super Heavy catch system is

Super Heavy is the first stage of SpaceX’s Starship vehicle. The booster is powered by 33 Raptor engines burning sub-cooled liquid methane and liquid oxygen. Rather than landing on deployable legs, it is designed to fly back to the launch area and be captured by the launch tower.

The tower hardware is formally part of the Mechazilla system. Its two large movable arms are commonly called “chopsticks.” They extend from the tower, move around the returning booster and close until the vehicle is held above the ground. The arms then support the booster while it remains suspended beside the launch mount.

Reported caught-booster height 232 feet (71 meters), as reported by the Associated Press in 2024

How a tower catch works, step by step

A catch is not a single maneuver. It is the final part of a planned return flight that combines stage-separation timing, boost-back guidance, a controlled approach and a last-second decision by the flight director.

1. Super Heavy separates from Starship

After the launch phase, the upper-stage Starship spacecraft separates from Super Heavy. The booster is still traveling away from the launch site, so it must reverse its horizontal motion and shed altitude and speed before it can reach the tower.

2. The booster performs a boost-back

Super Heavy fires its engines to execute a boost-back and return flight toward Starbase. This maneuver redirects the booster toward the launch complex rather than sending it to a distant landing zone. The exact timing and engine pattern can vary with the flight profile; public descriptions do not provide a complete control-law specification.

3. A landing burn removes vertical speed

Near the pad, Super Heavy performs a landing burn. The burn reduces its downward velocity and places the vehicle on a trajectory alongside the tower. The objective is not to settle onto a concrete pad. It is to arrive in a narrow capture area with enough control authority to hover while the arms move into position.

4. Flight controllers make a go/no-go decision

The flight director checks the condition of both the booster and the tower in real time. The catch is authorized only when both are stable enough for the operation. This check matters because the arms are large, moving structures close to a fueled rocket; closing them around a vehicle that is not correctly aligned could damage the booster or the tower.

5. Super Heavy hovers beside the tower

With a go decision, the returning booster holds its position in the capture area. The public accounts describe the vehicle as hovering beside the tower while the chopsticks move toward it. That hover gives the arms time to align with the booster rather than trying to intercept it at high speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. The chopsticks close and support the booster

The two arms close around Super Heavy and tightly grip it above the pad. Once the arms carry the load, the booster is suspended from the tower instead of resting on landing legs. This is the successful end state of the catch sequence: the vehicle is held at the launch site in a position from which ground crews can prepare the next operation.

Why SpaceX catches the booster at the launch tower

It keeps recovery at the launch site

A tower catch brings the booster back to the place where it launches. That can eliminate the need to send a recovery team to a separate landing site and then transport a large first stage back to the pad. The Associated Press notes that Falcon 9 boosters normally land on ocean platforms or concrete pads several miles from their launch pads, whereas Super Heavy is designed for a tower catch.

It supports rapid reuse

SpaceX explicitly links the catch concept with full reuse and rapid reuse. Holding the booster on the tower allows the launch infrastructure to position it for subsequent processing and launch operations without the separate recovery-and-transport cycle required when a booster lands away from the pad.

It replaces landing legs with launch-site hardware

A conventional landing system must carry, deploy and support legs or another touchdown structure. Super Heavy instead relies on the tower’s arms to perform the final support function. The trade is a lighter or simpler vehicle-side landing arrangement in exchange for a much more demanding tower, guidance and operations system. The public sources do not quantify the mass saved by omitting legs.

How a tower catch differs from a conventional booster landing

Comparison point Super Heavy tower catch Conventional booster landing
Recovery location At the launch tower and pad complex At a separate concrete pad or ocean platform; Falcon 9 examples normally land several miles from their launch pads
Final support hardware Two moving tower arms, the “chopsticks,” grip the booster above the ground Landing legs and a prepared landing surface support the booster after touchdown
Final flight condition A controlled hover beside the tower followed by arm closure A propulsive descent that ends with contact on a pad or deck
Ground operations The captured vehicle is already at the launch site and suspended for follow-on operations The recovered vehicle must be secured and may require transport back to the launch site
Abort or no-go consequence The catch is attempted only after a go decision; public descriptions do not publish the complete alternate trajectory if the decision is no-go The landing plan and its contingencies depend on the booster, mission and designated landing site

The comparison is about the recovery architecture, not a claim that one system is universally safer or cheaper. A tower catch moves more of the complexity into the pad: the tower, arms, sensors, software and flight-control coordination all have to work together during the final seconds.

The milestones that proved the concept

Flight 5: 13 October 2024

Starship Flight 5 produced the first successful Super Heavy tower catch. The Associated Press reported that the booster was 232 feet (71 meters) tall and that the arms caught and tightly gripped it above the pad.

After the event, SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk wrote, “The tower has caught the rocket!!” SpaceX engineering manager Kate Tice called it “a day for the engineering history books,” and SpaceX spokesman Dan Huot said, “Even in this day and age, what we just saw is magic.” Those comments describe the significance of the demonstration; they do not supply a catch-force measurement or a guaranteed operational cadence.

Flight 7: 16 January 2025

Flight 7 delivered the second successful Super Heavy catch, according to SpaceX’s update and the Associated Press. The booster was captured even though the Starship spacecraft was later lost during ascent. That outcome separates the two parts of the mission: the upper-stage result was unsuccessful, while the booster-return and tower-catch sequence succeeded.

What is known about the chopsticks—and what is not

The arms have been shortened

SpaceX’s reusability update says the chopsticks were shortened to permit faster motion and better tracking of the vehicle during catch operations. That change illustrates why the visible hardware should not be treated as permanently fixed. Arm length, motion profiles and tracking software can be revised between flights.

No public catch-force or speed figure is established

Authoritative descriptions of the demonstrated catches do not publish the force applied to the booster, the closing speed of the arms or a complete set of control-law parameters. Those values should not be filled in with estimates presented as specifications. The available evidence establishes the sequence and the outcome, not a full engineering data sheet.

The arms do more than “grab” the rocket

Calling them chopsticks is useful shorthand, but the operation involves a coordinated mechanical and flight-control system. The booster must arrive at the correct location and attitude, maintain a hover, and remain stable while the arms move. The tower must also be in a condition that the flight director considers safe for capture. A successful catch therefore demonstrates coordination among propulsion, guidance, sensing, tower mechanisms and human decision-making.

Why Super Heavy does not land on legs like Falcon 9

Falcon 9’s established recovery method ends with the booster touching down on legs at a concrete pad or an ocean platform. Super Heavy’s design objective is different: return to the launch site and be caught by the tower. That approach can avoid moving a landed booster from a remote site and can leave it already integrated with the launch infrastructure.

The price of that advantage is precision. A legged landing has to control the vehicle to a touchdown point and tolerate contact with a deck or pad. A tower catch must control the vehicle to a capture corridor beside a tall structure and keep it there while moving arms close around it. The tower therefore becomes an active part of the landing system rather than merely a launch support structure.

What happens if conditions are not right

The documented procedure includes a real-time go/no-go decision before the arms close. If the flight director does not approve the catch, the arms are not committed to the capture maneuver. Public accounts of Flights 5 and 7 do not provide a complete, general-purpose description of every no-go trajectory or fallback outcome, and those details can depend on the mission profile and vehicle condition.

This limitation is important when interpreting videos of the system. Seeing the chopsticks move is not, by itself, proof that the booster was already captured; the defining event is the arms closing around and supporting the vehicle above the pad. Likewise, a successful booster catch does not mean every part of a Starship flight succeeded, as Flight 7 demonstrated.

What the catch means for Starship’s reuse plan

The tower catch is intended to make the booster part of a repeatable launch cycle: ascent, separation, return, capture and preparation for another flight at the same complex. The concept is broader than a landing trick. It treats the launch tower as both a launch structure and a recovery machine.

Whether that vision produces a particular launch rate, refurbishment interval or cost remains dependent on operational data that has not been publicly established in the reports describing the first two catches. The demonstrated facts are narrower but significant: Super Heavy can return to the tower, hover in the capture area and be held by the arms, and that sequence was achieved on both Flights 5 and 7.
