Creative director Jan Theysen describes their strength as elite units whose survival, upgrades and equipment choices matter—and whose limited numbers make resource control a real trade-off. The interview is accompanied by Space Marine screenshots.
What makes Space Marines different?
Theysen calls the Space Marines the “most elite faction.” In the interview, he describes relatively few, expensive units that are effective but valuable to preserve and upgrade. That is a description of the faction’s intended play, not a post-release balance assessment.

The defining constraint is breadth. A Space Marine force may be strong where it is fighting, but it has fewer units available to defend multiple locations or capture distant resource points at the same time. As Theysen puts it: “Because again, as a Space Marine, you have the problem that you can’t be everywhere at once, right?”
That trade-off distinguishes elite strength from an all-purpose advantage. A costly squad committed to one engagement is not simultaneously securing another part of the map; expanding too quickly may leave valuable units exposed, while keeping the force together can concede ground elsewhere.

How the interview frames Space Marine tactics
Choose when to split the force
The interview describes a choice between moving quickly to capture resource points and preserving a smaller force. Scattering units can improve map presence, but reduces the concentration of strength available for a fight. Keeping units together protects that strength, but can leave objectives uncontested.
Use durability to buy time, not to ignore risk
Theysen’s description allows for aggressive deployments and units that can hold out while reinforcements arrive. That makes timing and support important: a unit surviving an initial attack may still be in danger if help cannot reach it. The interview presents this as a tactical possibility, not a guarantee that Space Marines can safely hold any position.

Establish production near the front
The interview says Space Marines can call buildings down from orbit rather than depending on a builder unit. This offers a way to establish production closer to the action, according to the developer’s account. It does not remove the faction’s small-force limitation: production and reinforcements still have to support decisions about where to fight and what to defend.

Theysen describes equipment and weapon choices as a way to tailor units to a task. Examples in the interview include Intercessor weapon options and Dreadnought configurations for different targets. Specialization gives a player reasons to consider what a force is expected to face, but the interview does not establish which configuration is strongest or how those choices will balance in competitive play.
