How soybean oil becomes biodiesel and renewable diesel

How does soybean oil become biodiesel or renewable diesel? It depends on the conversion route. Transesterification reacts soybean oil with a short-chain alcohol, usually methanol, and a catalyst to make oxygen-containing biodiesel plus glycerin. Hydrotreating reacts the oil with hydrogen over a catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, removes its oxygen, and produces hydrocarbon renewable diesel.

The two fuels may start with the same soybean oil, but they are not interchangeable products. In the United States, biodiesel is specified by ASTM D6751 and is generally blended with petroleum diesel; renewable diesel is specified by ASTM D975 and can substitute for or blend with petroleum diesel when it meets that specification.

The two conversion routes at a glance

Soybean oil is primarily a lipid feedstock. A processing plant can convert those lipids into either an ester fuel or a hydrocarbon fuel. The route determines the chemistry, coproducts, equipment, fuel specification and how the finished fuel is used.

Route Main transformation Inputs Product U.S. specification and typical use
Biodiesel Transesterification of triglycerides Soybean oil, usually methanol, and usually a sodium- or potassium-based catalyst Mono-alkyl ester biodiesel plus glycerin ASTM D6751; generally blended with petroleum diesel
Renewable diesel Hydrotreating; hydrogen treatment removes oxygen and upgrades the lipids Soybean oil or other lipids, hydrogen, a catalyst, elevated temperature and elevated pressure Hydrocarbon renewable diesel ASTM D975; can substitute for or blend with petroleum diesel

The key distinction is chemical. Biodiesel remains an ester and contains oxygen in its molecules. Renewable diesel is processed into hydrocarbons that are chemically the same type of molecules found in petroleum diesel.

Why raw soybean oil cannot simply go into a diesel engine

Vegetable oil is not the same fuel as either biodiesel or renewable diesel. Raw soybean oil has a different viscosity from diesel fuel. Its behavior during injection and combustion can lead to long-term deposits, lubrication problems and other maintenance issues. Filtering or heating cooking oil does not perform the chemical conversion required for a fuel that meets a recognized diesel specification.

Fuel production therefore changes the oil’s molecular structure. Transesterification lowers the effective size and viscosity of the oil-derived molecules by converting triglycerides into smaller esters. Hydrotreating removes oxygen and rearranges the feedstock into hydrocarbons suitable for diesel-fuel service. Neither route should be confused with using untreated oil as a drop-in fuel.

How soybean oil becomes biodiesel

1. Prepare the oil and alcohol

A biodiesel plant starts with soybean oil and a short-chain alcohol, usually methanol. The oil must be suitable for the reaction, and the plant controls water and other contaminants because they can interfere with catalyst performance and downstream separation. The alcohol is measured into the process rather than added as an informal cooking ingredient.

2. Carry out transesterification

Soybean oil is made largely of triglycerides: glycerol backbones attached to fatty-acid chains. In transesterification, the triglycerides react with methanol in the presence of a catalyst, usually based on sodium or potassium. The methanol supplies the alkyl group that becomes part of the fuel molecule. The triglyceride is split into mono-alkyl esters and glycerol.

The U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center describes the reaction directly: the fuel is produced by transesterification, a process that converts fats and oils into biodiesel and glycerin, a coproduct. In practical terms, the ester fraction is the biodiesel, while the glycerin-rich fraction is separated for further handling or processing.

3. Separate the biodiesel and glycerin

After the reaction, the plant separates the ester-rich biodiesel phase from the glycerin-rich phase. Unreacted alcohol and catalyst residues are managed in subsequent recovery and purification steps. The biodiesel must be cleaned and dried enough to satisfy its applicable fuel specification; simply allowing the two liquid phases to settle does not prove that the fuel is finished.

4. Understand the mass balance correctly

DOE gives an approximate explanatory example: about 100 pounds of oil or fat plus 10 pounds of alcohol yields about 100 pounds of biodiesel and 10 pounds of glycerin. This is a simplified mass illustration, not a guaranteed plant yield. Actual output depends on feedstock composition, conversion, recovery, purification and how coproduct streams are counted.

5. Check the finished fuel against ASTM D6751

In the United States, neat biodiesel is covered by ASTM D6751. That specification is the quality gate for the biodiesel component before it is blended with petroleum diesel. The appropriate blend level and expected performance depend on the fuel specification, storage conditions, climate, vehicle and engine guidance. A label saying that a liquid came from soybean oil is not evidence that it meets ASTM D6751.

How soybean oil becomes renewable diesel

1. Feed the lipid to a hydrotreating unit

Renewable diesel production uses a different reaction family. Commercial facilities currently use hydrotreating: soybean oil or another lipid feedstock is contacted with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure.

2. Remove oxygen with hydrogen treatment

The feedstock’s oxygen-containing groups are removed during the hydrogen-treatment reactions. The process also upgrades the lipid molecules so the resulting carbon chains fall within the range required for diesel fuel. This is not transesterification: there is no ester-fuel product and no glycerin coproduct serving as the defining output.

3. Produce a hydrocarbon diesel fuel

The resulting renewable diesel is a hydrocarbon. Because it is chemically the same type of fuel as petroleum diesel, a product meeting ASTM D975 can substitute for petroleum diesel or be blended with it. Engine and storage decisions still depend on the exact commercial product, applicable regulations and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

Hydrotreating requires industrial hydrogen handling, high-pressure equipment, heat management and catalyst control. Those requirements are why renewable diesel is produced in refinery-scale or similarly engineered facilities rather than by a simple batch conversion of household oil.

What the production numbers show

The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2025 Biomass report, which reports data for 2022 rather than for 2025 or 2026, records 1.62 billion gallons of U.S. biodiesel production and 1.5 billion gallons of U.S. renewable diesel production. The report attributes the underlying figures to the Energy Information Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The same 2022 data show different soybean-oil flows into the two routes: 3.6 million tons of soybean oil were used in biodiesel production, while 1.7 million tons were used in renewable-diesel plants. These figures describe that year’s reported U.S. use; they should not be read as current annual totals or as a fixed conversion ratio between soybean-oil consumption and fuel output.

How policy counts the fuels

The federal Renewable Fuel Standard tracks qualifying renewable fuels with Renewable Identification Numbers, commonly called RINs. The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center identifies both biodiesel and non-ester renewable diesel within the biomass-based diesel category.

For that category, the federal framework uses a 50 percent lifecycle greenhouse-gas-reduction threshold. Eligibility and credit treatment can depend on the specific feedstock, production pathway and other compliance details, so the category label alone does not establish that every possible soybean-oil process receives identical treatment.

Can soybean oil be converted at small scale?

Why a household setup is not equivalent to a fuel plant

A small vessel, a bottle of methanol and an improvised catalyst do not provide the controls needed to demonstrate specification-grade biodiesel. Methanol is hazardous, catalyst solutions are corrosive, and the process requires controlled mixing, separation, alcohol management, drying and quality testing. Renewable diesel is even less suitable for casual production because hydrotreating requires hydrogen at elevated pressure and temperature with engineered catalysts and safety systems.

What a legitimate fuel producer must control

  • Feedstock quality and consistent composition.
  • Alcohol-to-oil ratio and catalyst concentration for transesterification.
  • Water, impurities and reaction temperature.
  • Phase separation, residual alcohol and purification.
  • Finished-fuel testing against the applicable ASTM specification.
  • For renewable diesel, hydrogen purity and flow, pressure, temperature, catalyst condition and product upgrading.

Retail cooking oil has not been established here as a validated practical input for consumer-scale fuel production. Industrial equipment and process controls, not a particular brand of cooking oil, determine whether the output is a compliant fuel.

Choosing the right term when describing soybean-based diesel

Use biodiesel when the product is an ester

If the process uses methanol and a catalyst to convert triglycerides into mono-alkyl esters and glycerin, call the fuel biodiesel. Explain that it contains oxygen and is covered by ASTM D6751 in the United States.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use renewable diesel when the product is a hydrocarbon

If the process uses hydrogen, a catalyst, elevated temperature and elevated pressure to remove oxygen and upgrade the lipid, call the fuel renewable diesel. Explain that a qualifying product meets ASTM D975 and can be used as a petroleum-diesel substitute or blend component.

Do not use the terms as synonyms

Calling hydrotreating transesterification, or calling ester biodiesel renewable diesel, hides the differences that determine storage, blending, engine compatibility, standards and policy treatment. The shared soybean-oil feedstock does not make the finished fuels chemically identical.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Mistake: treating raw soybean oil as biodiesel. Raw oil has different viscosity and can cause deposits and maintenance problems. Fix: identify the conversion process and verify the applicable fuel specification.
  • Mistake: saying renewable diesel is made by transesterification. Commercial renewable diesel is made through hydrotreating. Fix: reserve transesterification for the ester-biodiesel route.
  • Mistake: assuming all soybean-derived fuels have the same blend rules. Biodiesel and renewable diesel use different ASTM standards. Fix: check D6751 for biodiesel and D975 for renewable diesel.
  • Mistake: presenting 2022 production as a current figure. The DOE report was published in 2025 but reports 2022 data. Fix: carry the year and source date with every statistic.
  • Mistake: treating the DOE mass example as a guaranteed yield. The 100-pound oil, 10-pound alcohol, 100-pound biodiesel and 10-pound glycerin example is simplified. Fix: describe it as an approximate explanatory ratio.
