Solar-wind switchbacks are short-lived bends in the magnetic field carried by the solar wind. During a switchback, the field can swing sharply and point almost back toward the Sun instead of continuing in its usual outward direction. NASA’s Parker Solar Probe measures these events directly with electric- and magnetic-field sensors, plasma-wave instruments, and particle detectors. Those measurements have narrowed down where at least some switchbacks originate, but they have not established one formation mechanism.
The central distinction is between where a switchback comes from and how it is made. Parker observations have connected some switchback patches with magnetic funnels near the visible solar surface. Competing explanations still include magnetic reconnection, flux-rope structures, expansion of the solar wind, turbulence and waves, and shear between fast and slow streams.

What a solar-wind switchback is
A localized bend or reversal in the magnetic field
The solar wind is a flowing plasma of electrons, protons, alpha particles and other ions escaping the Sun. It carries the Sun’s magnetic field outward through the corona and interplanetary space. A switchback is a localized interval in that flow when the magnetic-field direction changes abruptly, often producing a large bend. In the most striking cases, the field vector turns far enough that it points nearly back toward the Sun relative to the surrounding outward-flowing field.

Parker Solar Probe does not see a switchback as a photograph of a distant structure. It flies through the plasma and records the field and particles at its own position. A rapid, coherent change in the measured field direction, together with the accompanying particle and wave behavior, is the in-situ signature of an encounter.

How long events last
NASA’s early Parker reports in 2019 described switchbacks lasting from a few seconds to several minutes as they flowed over the spacecraft. That duration is the time measured at Parker, not a universal physical size for every switchback. A structure’s apparent duration depends on its spatial scale, the solar-wind speed, and the spacecraft’s path through it.
What Parker Solar Probe measures
FIELDS: electric fields, magnetic fields and waves
The FIELDS instrument suite measures the electric and magnetic fields around the spacecraft. It also detects plasma waves in the nearby solar-wind environment. The magnetic-field record shows the direction and strength of a possible switchback, while electric-field and wave measurements reveal disturbances that may accompany the bend.
These measurements are essential because a field reversal can have several geometrical interpretations. A simple kink, a folded sheet, a helical flux rope, or a wave packet can produce different relationships between field components and plasma motion. FIELDS supplies the high-time-resolution field and wave data needed to distinguish those possibilities.

SWEAP stands for Solar Wind Electrons Alphas and Protons. Its sensors measure the principal particle populations in the solar wind, including their speeds, densities and energy distributions. Those observations show how the plasma moves through a field deflection and whether particles behave as expected for an Alfvénic disturbance, a reconnection exhaust, a compressed structure or another candidate.
Why the two suites are used together
NASA teams identify clusters of switchbacks by combining FIELDS and SWEAP data. The field direction alone says that the magnetic geometry changed; particle measurements provide the local flow and plasma context. Together they allow scientists to test whether the field and velocity changes are correlated, to identify waves, and to compare the event’s properties with predictions from different formation models.
Why close-in measurements change the picture
As solar wind travels away from the Sun, its magnetic structures can expand, interact and evolve. Parker samples the wind much closer to its source than spacecraft in near-Earth space, where some of the original structure may have been altered. Measurements near the corona therefore help researchers ask whether a switchback was already present when the wind was launched or developed later during outward propagation.

Parker’s first reported crossing of the Alfvén critical surface occurred on April 28, 2021, at 18.8 solar radii, approximately 8.1 million miles above the solar surface, according to NASA’s December 2021 announcement. Inside this critical boundary, disturbances cannot readily travel back toward the Sun through the solar-wind flow. The crossing is a dated observation of one encounter, not a universal switchback boundary or a claim that all switchbacks form at exactly that distance.

How scientists think switchbacks may form
No single mechanism has been confirmed. The main proposals differ in where they generate the structure, what physical process drives it, and whether the result should look like a kink, a wave packet or a more organized flux rope.
Interchange reconnection at the Sun
In interchange reconnection, an open magnetic-field line that extends into the solar wind interacts with a closed magnetic loop rooted at both ends in the Sun. Reconnection changes the connectivity of those fields. NASA’s 2021 explanation describes how the rearrangement could eject plasma and send an S-shaped kink outward along an otherwise open field line.
This picture naturally places the source in the low corona, where open and closed magnetic regions meet. It can also account for a sharp field deflection launched with plasma. However, the reconnection scenario is a candidate mechanism, not an established cause for every observed switchback. A reconnection event might produce a kink, while a different interpretation of similar data treats the structure as a flux rope with more internal organization.
Flux-rope-like structures
A flux rope is a bundle of magnetic field lines wound around a central axis. If Parker crosses such a structure at an angle, the measured field can rotate through a large angle and briefly point sunward. Flux-rope interpretations are related to reconnection models because reconnection can create twisted magnetic structures, but the terms are not interchangeable: one describes a production process and the other describes the resulting geometry.

Testing this idea requires more than finding a field reversal. Scientists look for an orderly rotation of field components, consistent particle behavior and a spatial profile that differs from a simple kink or wave. Existing Parker observations have not selected a universal structure for all switchbacks.
Formation during solar-wind expansion
Another model proposes that switchbacks can arise naturally as the solar wind expands away from the Sun. In NASA’s 2021 explainer, a testable expectation was that regions expanding more rapidly should contain more switchbacks. This is a model prediction reported at that time, not a settled observational law.
Expansion changes the balance among magnetic tension, plasma pressure and wave activity. A small deflection near the Sun could grow as the flow expands, or an expanding parcel could generate a nonlinear bend without requiring a single reconnection event at the photosphere. Parker measurements of field strength, velocity and density at different distances are used to test whether the predicted relationships hold.

Shear between fast and slow streams
Solar wind does not leave the Sun at one speed. NASA’s 2021 explainer used approximate background values of around 430 miles per second for fast wind and around 220 miles per second for slow wind. These figures describe representative fast and slow flows in that explanation; they are not fixed universal speeds or new Parker measurements.
Where faster and slower streams meet, velocity shear can generate swirls and distort magnetic-field lines. One version of this idea places the main formation farther from the Sun, while related models combine near-Sun processes with later evolution in the wind. The prediction is that switchback properties should correlate with stream boundaries and shear, rather than only with magnetic features at the solar surface.
Waves, turbulence and instabilities
Alfvénic turbulence is another candidate. Alfvén waves carry correlated magnetic and velocity fluctuations through a magnetized plasma. Large-amplitude waves can steepen, fold or interact to produce temporary field reversals. The NASA Technical Reports Server record titled Observation of a Magnetic Switchback in the Solar Corona, listed in 2023, summarizes a field that also considers Kelvin–Helmholtz instability and Parker-spiral geometry among possible explanations.

Kelvin–Helmholtz instability can develop where adjacent flows move at different speeds, rolling the interface into vortices. Parker-spiral geometry, meanwhile, describes the large-scale winding of the interplanetary magnetic field caused by solar rotation and outward flow. Either effect could influence the observed direction, but neither has been demonstrated as the universal source of switchbacks.
How the formation hypotheses compare
| Hypothesis | Likely generation region | Proposed driver | Expected structure | What measurements must test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Interchange reconnection | Solar surface or low corona where open and closed fields meet | Magnetic reconnection and plasma release | Outward-moving kink; potentially a twisted structure | Field topology, plasma outflows, heating and connectivity changes |
| Flux-rope interpretation | Near the Sun, potentially produced by reconnection | Organized magnetic twist | Coherent rotation around a magnetic axis | Orderly field rotation and particle behavior across the crossing |
| Expansion model | Developing in the expanding solar wind | Nonlinear evolution as the flow expands | Large-amplitude bend or reversal that grows with expansion | Occurrence and amplitude versus expansion rate and heliocentric distance |
| Fast/slow stream shear | Interfaces in the outflow, near the Sun or farther out | Velocity shear and stream interaction | Swirls that curl field lines | Relations among switchbacks, stream boundaries and velocity gradients |
| Alfvénic turbulence or instability | Corona and expanding wind | Wave interactions, turbulence or Kelvin–Helmholtz growth | Wave-like, folded or vortical field signatures | Field–velocity correlations, wave spectra and instability geometry |
The comparison does not identify a winner. A switchback population could contain structures made by more than one process, and a structure launched near the Sun can continue changing as it travels outward.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the photospheric-funnel evidence shows
NASA reported that switchback patches observed during a Parker encounter aligned with magnetic funnels emerging near the photosphere between supergranular cells. Supergranular cells are large convective patterns on the visible solar surface; their boundaries can concentrate magnetic fields and channel plasma upward.
This alignment is important because it localizes at least some switchback activity to a specific type of solar magnetic environment. It supports the idea that the structures are connected to the Sun rather than being created only by interplanetary evolution. It does not, by itself, reveal whether reconnection, plasma waves, turbulence or another process made the bend inside those funnels.
NASA explicitly noted that the observations had not confirmed whether plasma waves or magnetic reconnection produced the structures. A source region is therefore not a mechanism. The same funnel could host multiple processes, and the spacecraft samples the result after it has propagated through the corona.

The open problem has two parts. First, scientists must determine the magnetic topology of an individual event: is it a kink, a flux rope, a wave packet, a vortex or a combination? Second, they must establish where the decisive transformation occurred. A structure may be seeded near the photosphere and then amplified by expansion or stream shear.
Best Value
The 2023 NASA Technical Reports Server summary is useful context because it describes candidate mechanisms using Solar Orbiter coronal observations, not a direct Parker measurement. Its list of Alfvénic turbulence, Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, interchange reconnection and Parker-spiral geometry illustrates why the mechanism remains unresolved across missions.
Kelly Korreck, a NASA Headquarters heliophysics program scientist, summarized the state of the field this way: “There are a variety of theories, and as we get more and more data to test those theories, we get closer to figuring out switchbacks and their role in the solar wind.”
How Parker data can discriminate among models
- Measure the field rotation. FIELDS records the three-dimensional magnetic direction and strength as Parker enters and leaves an event. A smooth, organized rotation would support a different geometry than an abrupt kink or a turbulent cascade.
- Compare field and plasma velocity. SWEAP provides particle-flow measurements that can be compared with magnetic fluctuations. Strong Alfvénic correlations favor wave-related interpretations, while distinct flow boundaries may support reconnection or stream-shear scenarios.
- Check electric fields and waves. Wave spectra and electric-field signatures can show whether energy is carried by propagating disturbances or deposited locally in a reconnection region.
- Relate events to solar magnetic maps. When a switchback patch can be traced back to a magnetic funnel, pseudostreamer or another coronal structure, the source-location question becomes more constrained.
- Compare encounters at different distances. If the same type of event changes systematically with heliocentric distance, that pattern can test expansion and outward-evolution models. A single encounter cannot establish such a trend.

Why switchbacks matter for solar physics
Switchbacks are clues to how the corona transfers energy into the solar wind. Their magnetic bends, associated waves and particle responses may reveal how coronal plasma is heated and how the outflow is accelerated to high speed. They also provide a way to study magnetic connectivity between the photosphere and the heliosphere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHowever, current observations do not show that switchbacks alone explain coronal heating or solar-wind acceleration. They may be one part of a larger chain: magnetic energy could be released near the Sun, reorganized into a kink or flux rope, and then modified by waves, expansion and stream interactions. Parker’s close-in measurements are designed to separate those stages rather than assign every effect to one phenomenon.
Bottom line
Parker Solar Probe detects switchbacks as brief, sometimes dramatic reversals or bends in the local solar-wind magnetic field. FIELDS measures the fields and waves; SWEAP measures electrons, alpha particles and protons. Parker observations have linked some switchback patches to magnetic funnels between supergranular cells, improving knowledge of where they originate. The physical formation process remains under investigation, with reconnection, flux ropes, expansion, stream shear, turbulence and instabilities all still considered candidate explanations.
