Solana’s shared global state allows programs to call one another inside a single atomic transaction, so an application can sometimes combine a swap with a deposit or borrowing action. The transaction either succeeds as a unit or fails as a unit; that composability does not guarantee a good price, solvency, or safety.
The practical differences between protocols matter. Pool design, available liquidity, route selection, fees, collateral rules, interest rates, and liquidation parameters are set by each market and can change. Treat every quote and lending parameter as current only for the transaction and market you are examining.

What the three building blocks do
Liquidity pools provide the inventory
A liquidity pool is a smart-contract-controlled set of token reserves. Instead of waiting for a matching buyer and seller, a trader exchanges against the pool. Liquidity providers deposit assets into the pool under its rules, making those assets available to other users. The pool’s design determines how much liquidity is available at different prices and how a trade is quoted.

A swap is the transaction that gives one token to a pool or route of pools and receives another token. A router can inspect multiple pools and select a path. The resulting quote depends on the route, the amount being traded, the liquidity available at that moment, estimated price impact, and transaction-level fees.

Lending creates credit markets
A lending protocol maintains markets in which users supply assets, use assets as collateral, or borrow available assets. The market sets its own supported tokens, collateral requirements, borrowing capacity, interest-rate behavior, and liquidation rules. Lending is therefore not just another kind of swap: it is a credit position that can remain open after the original transaction.
Why Solana transactions can combine DeFi actions
Solana’s developer documentation describes a shared global state and cross-program invocations (CPIs). A program can invoke another program while processing the same transaction, allowing applications to coordinate operations that would otherwise be separate steps. For example, an application could be designed to swap a token, deposit the result into a lending market, and update the user’s position in one transaction.
Atomic execution means the combined transaction succeeds or fails as a unit. If one required instruction fails, the transaction does not leave a partially completed sequence of those instructions. Atomicity does not lock in a favorable exchange rate, prevent a pool from having insufficient liquidity, or remove smart-contract, market, wallet, or liquidation risk. Whether a particular application supports a combined workflow is an implementation detail; do not assume that every protocol can be composed in the same way.
How Solana liquidity pools set swap prices
Pool-specific automated market makers
Automated market makers (AMMs) use rules encoded by the pool to quote an exchange without a conventional order book. The rule uses the pool’s current reserves and the requested trade size. A larger order relative to available liquidity generally receives a less favorable effective price, which is reported as price impact by many interfaces. The exact formula, fee, and accounting model vary by pool and are not interchangeable.
Concentrated-liquidity pools
In a concentrated-liquidity design, providers allocate liquidity within selected price ranges rather than across every possible price. This can place more usable liquidity near the current market, but a position can become inactive when the market moves outside its chosen range. The position mechanics, fees, and provider outcomes depend on the protocol’s rules; a pool label alone does not establish that providing liquidity will be profitable.

Orca’s compliance disclosure says its router evaluates liquidity across Orca concentrated-liquidity market-maker (CLMM) pools and estimates price impact using the AMM formula. That describes how its interface evaluates routes, not a universal formula for every Solana pool.
What determines the quote you see
- Trade size: the same pool can quote a different effective price for a small and a large order.
- Available liquidity: inactive concentrated ranges or thin reserves can increase price impact.
- Route: a direct pool may not be the best path if an intermediate token and another pool produce more output.
- Pool and transaction fees: the applicable amounts depend on the selected venues and the transaction.
- State at execution: another transaction can change reserves before yours is processed, so a displayed quote is not a permanent guarantee.
How a Solana swap is routed and executed
- Connect a self-custodial wallet. The interface displays the wallet address that will sign and pay for the transaction. Orca describes its interface as non-custodial: users execute transactions through their own wallets.
- Select the input and output tokens. Check the token identity and mint details rather than relying only on a ticker symbol. Confirm that the wallet holds enough of the input asset and any required transaction balance.
- Review the route and quote. Note the expected output, the pools or venues used, estimated price impact, and every fee shown by the interface. A route selected by an aggregator is transaction-specific, not a permanent ranking of protocols.
- Check execution limits. If the interface offers a minimum-output or price-protection setting, understand what it does before signing. A tighter limit can cause a transaction to fail rather than execute at a worse price; the exact control and terminology differ by application.
- Approve and sign. Read the wallet prompt, verify the program and token accounts involved, and sign only when the details match your intended trade.
- Verify the result on-chain. Confirm the final token balance and transaction status in the wallet or a Solana explorer. A failed atomic transaction should not be treated as a completed swap, although network fees or an application-specific fee may still be charged according to the transaction’s rules.
Aggregators and native routers
Solana’s official developer overview lists the Jupiter Swap API for routing across Solana liquidity. Orca documents a native router that evaluates its own CLMM pools. These are different scopes: an aggregator can search across supported sources, while a protocol router may focus on that protocol’s pools. Compare the actual quoted output, route, price impact, and fees for the transaction you are about to sign instead of assuming one router is always superior.
How lending markets work on Solana
Supplying assets
A supplier deposits an accepted asset into a lending market. The protocol records the position and exposes reserve information according to its design. In return, the user may earn a market-defined rate or receive a representation of the supplied position; the exact mechanism and rate are protocol-specific.
Borrowing against collateral
A borrower supplies collateral and requests an available asset. The market determines how much can be borrowed relative to the collateral, which assets qualify, and how the position’s interest changes over time. A borrowed position remains exposed to asset-price movements and to changes in the market’s parameters.
Liquidation exposure
If collateral value or another health measure crosses a market’s liquidation threshold, the protocol may allow liquidators to repay part or all of the debt and claim collateral under that market’s rules. Thresholds, penalties, close factors, and interest-rate mechanics differ. The retrieved official overview names lending integrations but does not establish current values for those parameters, so read the specific market documentation immediately before supplying or borrowing.

A cautious lending workflow
- Identify the exact market. Confirm the protocol, reserve, supported collateral, borrowable asset, and whether the market is isolated or shared, if the interface presents that distinction.
- Read the live parameters. Record the displayed supply rate, borrow rate, collateral factor, liquidation threshold, and any penalty or reserve fee. Treat them as changeable market data.
- Supply only an amount you can leave at risk. Test the deposit transaction and verify the resulting position before adding more.
- Borrow conservatively. Keep substantial distance from the displayed liquidation threshold; a small price move or rate change can reduce that distance.
- Monitor the position. Watch collateral prices, debt growth, health indicators, and governance or parameter changes. Repay or add collateral before the market reaches its liquidation condition.
- Close deliberately. Repay the outstanding debt, account for accrued interest and any fees, and withdraw collateral only after the interface shows that the debt is cleared.

Swap first, then supply
A user holding one token may swap into an asset accepted by a lending market and then supply it. These can be two transactions, or an application may compose them through CPIs into one atomic transaction if its programs and account handling support that path. Combining them reduces coordination between steps, but it does not eliminate the price impact of the swap or the risks of the lending market.
Supply collateral, then borrow
Another common sequence is to supply a collateral asset and borrow a different asset. The borrowed token can later be swapped through a router, but that creates both a debt obligation and market exposure. A favorable swap does not make the collateral position safe, and a rising borrow rate or falling collateral price can still trigger liquidation.
Why composability can fail
- A required account, token approval, or program instruction may be missing.
- The quote can become invalid when pool reserves change.
- The lending market may have insufficient borrow liquidity.
- The combined transaction may exceed available compute or transaction-size limits.
- A protocol may intentionally block a particular CPI or route.
When a composed transaction fails atomically, inspect the wallet’s error and the transaction simulation details rather than repeating the same signature blindly.

Network figures and what they do—and do not—prove
A Solana Foundation developer page published the following dated figures: $76 billion in decentralized-exchange volume during the 30 days ending October 8, 2026; $16 billion in U.S.-dollar stablecoins on Solana as of October 8, 2026; and 100 million compute units per block since July 29, 2026. The same page states a 4,096-byte maximum v1 transaction size, without stating an effective date for that limit in the retrieved material.
These are figures published by the Solana Foundation, not independently audited measurements presented here. High volume, stablecoin supply, compute capacity, or a transaction-size limit does not establish that a particular pool is deep, a route is cheap, a lending market is solvent, or a protocol is safe.
Risks and safeguards
Smart-contract and integration risk
A bug, faulty upgrade, compromised dependency, or malicious token can cause loss even when a transaction is atomic. Atomicity protects the sequence of instructions, not the code that executes them.
Market and liquidity risk
Prices can move while a transaction is pending. Thin liquidity, a large order, or a concentrated position outside its active range can increase price impact. Check the quote immediately before signing and avoid treating a displayed estimate as guaranteed execution.
Borrowing and liquidation risk
Debt grows according to the market’s rate rules, while collateral value can fall. Maintain a buffer below liquidation thresholds and keep a repayment plan; never rely on a threshold remaining unchanged.
Wallet and phishing risk
Use the official application address you have independently verified, inspect wallet prompts, and avoid signing requests that do not match the intended action. A hardware wallet such as a compatible Ledger device can keep private keys on a dedicated signing device, but it does not prevent smart-contract exploits, bad prices, phishing, or liquidation. Compatibility must be checked for the exact wallet and application workflow.
Pre-signing checklist
- Correct token mint, network, and destination account
- Current quote, route, estimated price impact, and fees
- Enough balance for the trade and transaction costs
- For lending: supported asset, collateral factor, liquidation threshold, rates, and available borrow liquidity
- Wallet prompt matches the action you intended
- Plan for failure, repayment, withdrawal, or collateral top-up
Bottom line
Solana DeFi’s distinctive feature is composability: pools supply liquidity, routers use that liquidity for swaps, and lending markets turn supplied assets into collateralized credit. Shared state and atomic transactions can connect those functions, but every pool and market still has its own pricing, fees, liquidity, collateral, and liquidation rules. Evaluate the live transaction and the exact protocol terms rather than inferring safety or value from Solana-wide statistics or a protocol’s category.
