How SmartThings, Matter, and Smart Home Hubs Work Together

SmartThings is the platform and app, Matter is the device-communication standard, and a compatible hub normally supplies the controller that manages Matter devices. During setup, the SmartThings mobile app can act as the Matter commissioner: it scans the device QR code or accepts its setup code. After commissioning, the hub/controller manages the device. If the device uses Matter over Thread rather than Wi-Fi or Ethernet, your home also needs access to a Thread Border Router. That router may already be built into a compatible hub or another home device.

Understanding those separate jobs prevents the most common buying and setup mistakes. A Matter badge alone does not tell you whether your exact SmartThings hub, device category, firmware, region, or Thread network is supported.

The four layers in a SmartThings Matter setup

A reliable installation has four distinct layers. Keeping them separate makes compatibility problems much easier to diagnose.

1. The device

The endpoint is the light, plug, sensor, lock, thermostat, appliance or bridge you want to control. It may use Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave or a manufacturer integration. A Matter-certified device still has a specific category and transport, and those details determine what your SmartThings installation can do with it.

  • Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
  • Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings

2. The network transport

Matter is an application standard that can run over Wi-Fi, Ethernet/IP or Thread. Wi-Fi and Ethernet devices join the home IP network directly. Thread is a low-power mesh network; Thread endpoints reach the IP network through a Thread Border Router.

3. Commissioner and controller

The commissioner performs onboarding: it securely transfers the device’s credentials and adds the device to a Matter fabric. SmartThings documents its mobile app as the commissioner in this flow. The controller is the system that sends commands and maintains the device after setup; a supported SmartThings hub provides that controller role.

4. The SmartThings platform

SmartThings supplies the account, app interface, automations and capability model. For hub-connected devices, SmartThings Edge drivers translate protocols such as Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread, Zigbee and Z-Wave into SmartThings capabilities. Those hub-connected integrations can run locally on the hub when the relevant driver and device support local execution.

What Matter changes—and what it does not

Matter gives participating ecosystems a common way to discover, commission and control supported device types. It does not replace every part of a smart home. You still need a network, a controller, compatible software and the correct device category support.

SmartThings’ partner guidance states that Matter devices must connect to a compatible hub. Compatible options include standalone SmartThings hubs and hubs integrated into selected Samsung products, such as certain TVs, Smart Monitors, Family Hub refrigerators, SmartThings Station units and recent soundbars. The exact model and regional feature set matter; a product family name is not enough evidence of support.

(Tapo H100 cannot directly connect to Tapo smart plugs or smart lighting, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi is required.)
  • All Devices in One Hub- Each Tapo Hub can connect up to 64 Tapo devices throughout your home. Build and manage your smart home ecosystem with ease.
  • Protect Your Home Day and Night- By integrating with Tapo motion sensors, door/window sensors, and other devices, the Tapo Hub can activate a high-decibel siren (up to 90 dB) to alert of potential hazards or discourage intruders.

SmartThings says its ecosystem has more than 380 million global users. That is a company-published audience claim, not an independently audited measurement, and it does not guarantee that a particular Matter product works in every country.

Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Thread: choose the correct path

Device transport What the device needs Typical SmartThings requirement
Matter over Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi as specified by the device, plus local IP connectivity A compatible Matter controller/hub online during commissioning and operation
Matter over Ethernet Wired local network connection A compatible controller with access to the same IP network
Matter over Thread Thread mesh coverage and a Thread Border Router A compatible SmartThings hub or another compatible border router; the controller must also support the device category

Do not buy a Thread Border Router automatically. First check whether an existing SmartThings hub, smart speaker, display or other home device already provides one. Conversely, a Wi-Fi-capable hub does not become a Thread router merely because it supports Matter.

Do you need a SmartThings hub?

For the documented SmartThings Matter flow, yes: the device must be associated with a compatible controller, normally a supported hub. The phone running the SmartThings app helps commission the device but is not described as the permanent Matter controller.

SmartThings lists examples such as the Aeotec Smart Home Hub and SmartThings Hub 2018. Older compatibility information says the SmartThings 2015 Hub can control Matter devices using Wi-Fi or LAN, but it does not contain a Thread router. A separate compatible Thread Border Router is therefore required for Matter-over-Thread devices with that hub.

Model support, firmware requirements and regional availability change. Check the exact model in current SmartThings support information before purchasing, especially when you need Thread, Zigbee or Z-Wave in addition to Matter.

Adding a Matter device to SmartThings

The labels can change between app releases, but the documented sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare the network. Power the device, place it within radio range and confirm that the intended SmartThings hub is online. For Thread products, confirm that a compatible Thread Border Router is available and that the Thread network reaches the installation location.
  2. Open SmartThings. In the mobile app, choose Add device and select the Matter option or the device’s category when prompted.
  3. Scan or enter the setup code. Scan the Matter QR code printed on the product or packaging, or enter the numeric setup code manually. Keep the code private; it is used to authorize commissioning.
  4. Choose the controller and room. Select the compatible SmartThings hub when the app asks where the device should be added, then assign a room and name that make automations understandable.
  5. Select the network if prompted. A Wi-Fi Matter device may ask for the home Wi-Fi network and password. A Thread device may ask you to select an available Thread network. Do not substitute a Wi-Fi network for Thread credentials.
  6. Wait for commissioning to finish. Keep the phone nearby, leave the device powered and do not reset the hub during the transfer. The device should appear with the capabilities supported by its Matter category.
  7. Test the actual functions. Turn a light on and off, trigger a sensor, or lock and unlock a test door while watching the app. A successful pairing does not prove that every advanced feature is exposed.

Minimum app and firmware versions are volatile. The support article describing this flow contains older details, so verify current requirements in SmartThings support for your model and region before troubleshooting a version mismatch.

Sharing one Matter device with another platform

Matter multi-admin lets one device belong to more than one ecosystem. You can commission the device into SmartThings first, then share it with another Matter-compatible platform without removing it from SmartThings.

  1. Open the device in SmartThings and choose the sharing or multi-admin option.
  2. Generate the sharing QR code or setup code shown by the app.
  3. Open the second platform’s app and start its Matter commissioning flow.
  4. Scan or enter the shared code, then complete room and network choices in that app.
  5. Test the functions that platform supports.

SmartThings support states that a Matter device can connect to up to five services. Treat that as a reported operational limit, not a permanent guarantee. Each platform must support the relevant Matter device category and commands; sharing does not promise identical controls, names or automation features everywhere.

Thread Border Routers and the 2025 network-unification update

A Thread Border Router connects the Thread mesh to the home’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet/IP network. It does not replace the Matter controller. In a typical setup, the border router provides network reachability while the SmartThings hub/controller manages the Matter device.

On October 1, 2025, SmartThings announced two-way Thread network unification. The company said supported SmartThings hubs could join an existing Thread network created by another ecosystem, and a border router from another ecosystem could join the Thread network already used by SmartThings. The announced prerequisites were hub firmware 0.58.x, SmartThings iOS app 1.7.37.x or Android app 1.8.37.x.

This is implementation-dependent, not a universal promise. Third-party border-router vendors control their own Thread 1.4 compatibility updates, so two homes with apparently similar hardware may not have the same result. Update the hub and app, then verify the other vendor’s current Thread support before relying on network unification.

How to choose the right hub and accessories

Decision question Why it matters
Does the exact hub support Matter? The app alone is not the documented permanent controller; the hub must support Matter and your device category.
Is the device Wi-Fi/Ethernet or Thread? Transport determines whether you need only IP connectivity or also Thread infrastructure.
Is a Thread Border Router already present? If yes, another accessory may be unnecessary. If no, a Thread device cannot reach the controller.
Do you also use Zigbee or Z-Wave? Choose a hub with radios and software support for those protocols if they are part of your household.
Will you share the device? Confirm that the second ecosystem supports the same category and desired functions.
Are software and regional requirements current? Firmware, app versions, supported categories and availability change over time and by country.

A practical rule is conditional: add or retain a SmartThings-compatible hub when you need SmartThings Matter controller functions, hub-connected automations, Zigbee or Z-Wave. Add a separate Thread Border Router only when you are deploying Matter-over-Thread and no existing compatible equipment supplies that role.

Local operation, cloud operation and realistic expectations

SmartThings developer documentation says Edge drivers enable hub-connected devices to run locally on the hub, with benefits including speed, reliability and enhanced functionality. That statement applies to supported hub-connected integrations and drivers. It is not a guarantee that every Matter device, cloud integration, account feature or automation in a mixed setup will continue working without internet access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local execution also depends on the device’s capabilities and the automation’s design. Test critical routines, such as locks or leak alerts, under the conditions you expect to encounter rather than assuming that a Matter label automatically means local control.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The QR code will not scan

  • Increase the phone’s screen brightness or use manual numeric entry.
  • Check that you are adding the device through the Matter flow, not a manufacturer-specific flow.
  • Confirm the device has not already been commissioned to another fabric; reset it only when you understand the manufacturer’s reset procedure.

The app finds the device but cannot finish setup

  • Confirm the selected SmartThings hub is online and running current supported firmware.
  • For Wi-Fi devices, verify local network access and the correct Wi-Fi credentials.
  • For Thread devices, verify a reachable Thread Border Router and the selected Thread network.
  • Move the device closer to the hub or border router during commissioning, then return it to its final location.

The device pairs but some controls are missing

  • Check the Matter device category and the capabilities SmartThings supports for that category.
  • Update the device, hub and app where updates are available.
  • When using multi-admin, compare the second platform’s supported functions rather than assuming feature parity.

A Thread device works intermittently

  • Check Thread coverage and the placement of mains-powered Thread routers.
  • Make sure only compatible, current border-router implementations are being used.
  • After a network-unification change, allow the Thread network time to converge and re-test before factory-resetting the endpoint.

A concise compatibility checklist

  • Identify the device’s Matter category and transport: Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread.
  • Identify the exact SmartThings hub model and country or region.
  • Confirm the hub supports Matter and the required category.
  • For Thread, locate an existing compatible Thread Border Router or plan for one.
  • Update SmartThings, the hub and the device to supported software versions.
  • Keep the Matter QR/setup code available for first commissioning and any later multi-admin share.
  • Decide whether Zigbee, Z-Wave or local Edge execution are requirements in addition to Matter.
  • Test the specific controls and automations you actually need.

The central idea is simple: SmartThings is the service and interface, Matter is the common device standard, the commissioner handles onboarding, the controller manages the device, and Thread equipment supplies an additional network path when required. Once those roles are matched to the exact hub model, transport and software versions, you can tell whether a new device needs only the existing setup or an additional hub or border router.
