Smartphone cooling is a system for moving heat away from concentrated sources such as the application processor, graphics hardware, camera circuitry and charging components, then spreading that heat through the phone so it can reach the enclosure and surrounding air. Heat pipes and vapor chambers perform the transport stage with a sealed working fluid; graphite, copper and interface layers conduct heat between parts. Active systems add powered hardware such as a fan or thermoelectric element. None of these components makes heat disappear: sustained performance ultimately depends on how well the entire phone can release energy to its environment.
Why phones need a thermal system
A modern phone converts electrical power into useful work and heat. Gaming, high-resolution video recording, cellular data transfers, navigation, fast charging and camera processing can all place sustained loads on the application processor (AP), graphics processor, memory, modem and power-management circuitry. These parts occupy small areas, so heat can become concentrated even when the rest of the chassis feels relatively cool.

Temperature affects both performance and handling. When a component approaches a control limit, the operating system can reduce clock speed, voltage or power. Samsung Principle Engineer Kyungha Koo describes the behavior this way: “When the temperature reaches a certain point, the application processor (AP) decreases clock rates to prevent excessive heat build-up.” This protective response is commonly called thermal throttling. Samsung also says software heat-control algorithms work alongside physical spreaders; a larger heat spreader cannot compensate for every limitation imposed by a thin enclosure, a small battery area or a warm environment.

The complete heat path inside a phone
- Generation: A processor, modem, image processor, charging circuit or another powered part produces heat during operation.
- Pickup: A thermal interface layer, copper plate, graphite sheet, heat pipe or vapor chamber contacts or sits close to the hot component.
- Transport and spreading: Conductive solids carry heat through the stack, while a heat pipe moves it mainly along one route and a vapor chamber distributes it over a broad plane.
- Distribution: Heat reaches larger areas such as the frame, rear cover, display-side layers or internal shields. Designers balance this spreading against the need to keep touch surfaces comfortable.
- Release: The enclosure transfers energy to surrounding air by conduction, convection and radiation. A fan can force more air across a surface, but passive phones rely on the natural heat capacity and airflow around their chassis.
- Control: Sensors and software adjust clocks, voltage, charging power or application behavior if temperatures continue to rise.
This distinction matters because a heat pipe or chamber is a transport device, not a refrigerator. It can move a hotspot to a larger area, but the phone still has to reject the same energy into its surroundings.
How a sealed heat pipe works
The evaporation-and-condensation cycle
A heat pipe is a narrow, sealed enclosure containing a small amount of working fluid and a porous wick or return structure. At the hot end, heat causes some liquid to evaporate. The vapor travels toward a cooler section, where it condenses and releases its latent heat. Capillary forces in the wick then draw the liquid back toward the hot region, allowing the cycle to repeat without a pump.
Samsung’s explanation of the Galaxy S7 describes this as a water-to-steam-to-water cycle inside a porous thermal spreader. Samsung says that particular implementation measured 0.4 millimetres in diameter and that its engineer described its conductivity as generally more than 50 times that of copper. Those figures describe Samsung’s Galaxy S7 component, not a universal heat-pipe size or performance specification.

What a heat pipe is good at
Because vapor travels efficiently along the pipe, a heat pipe can move energy from a processor to a cooler location where a larger spreader or frame can absorb it. Its geometry is useful when a designer has a narrow route around a battery, camera module or structural reinforcement. The trade-off is directional behavior: a pipe primarily transports heat along its length rather than distributing it equally across an entire phone.
How a planar vapor chamber works
A flat two-phase spreader
A vapor chamber is a flat, sealed cavity containing a working fluid and a wick. Heat entering near the processor evaporates the fluid. Vapor spreads through the chamber in multiple directions, condenses in cooler regions and releases heat over a wider footprint. The wick returns liquid to the hot area so the cycle can continue.

OPPO describes the Find X5 Pro’s vapor chamber as an ultra-thin copper cavity containing a small amount of liquid. Xiaomi’s support explanation contrasts a vapor-chamber (VC) heat sink with a separate loop-and-pump design: a VC is a sealed liquid-filled chamber, not automatically a conventional circulating liquid loop. Xiaomi also explains that a VC spreads heat in all directions over a plane, while a heat pipe primarily circulates along one line.
Why a chamber does not make a phone cold
The chamber redistributes energy; it does not store an unlimited amount of “cold.” Its result depends on contact resistance at the processor, the chamber’s area and thickness, the surrounding graphite or copper layers, and how much of the enclosure can act as a heat sink. In a passive phone, the heat eventually reaches the exterior and the air. If the outside air is already hot or airflow is poor, the phone’s average temperature can still rise even when the chamber is working normally.

Phase-change devices are only one part of a phone’s thermal stack. Copper plates and foils conduct heat; graphite and graphene films spread it laterally across large areas; thermal interface materials fill microscopic gaps between a chip and its spreader. These layers can be placed above, below or around a vapor chamber or heat pipe.
- OPPO Find X5 Pro: OPPO documents copper and graphite near the display and graphene film in other hot zones.
- Samsung Galaxy Note9: Samsung describes carbon-fiber interface material and an added copper layer in its cooling stack.
- ASUS ROG Phone 7: ASUS describes graphite sheets used alongside the phone’s vapor chamber.
The examples show why a specification such as “has a vapor chamber” is incomplete. Thickness, contact area, interface quality, graphite coverage, frame construction and software limits all affect the final result.
What “active cooling” adds
Built-in fans
Active cooling supplies power to move heat more aggressively. OPPO says the K13 Turbo series integrates a variable-speed centrifugal fan inside the phone and combines it with a vapor chamber and graphite. Because the fan is internal, this is a model-specific architecture rather than a standard smartphone feature.

External fan and thermoelectric accessories
ASUS describes the ROG Phone 7’s AeroActive Cooler 7 as an external accessory that combines a fan with a thermoelectric Peltier element. The fan moves air, while the Peltier device uses electrical power to create a temperature difference across its surfaces. The accessory is designed for that phone family; compatibility should not be assumed for another handset.

Heat pipe, vapor chamber, spreader or active cooler?
| Approach | Where it picks up and spreads heat | Physical form | Power requirement | Typical design role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heat pipe | Moves heat mainly along a line from a hot area to a cooler area | Narrow sealed tube or strip with fluid and wick | Passive; no pump or fan | Routes heat around constrained internal layouts |
| Vapor chamber | Spreads heat across a plane in multiple directions | Flat sealed cavity with fluid and wick | Passive; no pump or fan | Reduces concentrated hotspots beneath a processor or across a broad mid-frame |
| Solid spreaders | Conduct or spread heat through adjoining layers | Copper, graphite, graphene and interface films | Passive | Bridges gaps and enlarges the area receiving heat; often paired with a chamber or pipe |
| Active cooling | Uses forced airflow or a thermoelectric stage in addition to passive parts | Built-in fan or external powered attachment; some designs include a Peltier element | Requires electrical power | Raises heat-transfer potential during sustained workloads in specific models |
There is no evidence here for a single architecture that wins in every phone. The relevant comparison is conditional: available thickness and area, the location of the processor, the surface temperature the designer permits, whether an external attachment is practical, and how the software manages sustained load.
How cooling affects sustained performance
Cooling changes the temperature curve, not just the first few seconds of a benchmark. A large chamber may delay the point at which the processor reaches its control limit by spreading heat into more material. A fan may increase heat rejection when the surrounding air is cooler than the phone. Software may still lower clocks if sensors detect that a component, battery, display layer or touch surface has reached its own limit.
“Temperature” can refer to several different measurements:

- Chassis or back-cover temperature: how warm an external surface becomes.
- Touch-panel temperature: the display-side surface felt by a user’s finger.
- Sustained performance: how much speed or power the phone maintains over a long workload.
A design can lower a back cover’s temperature by spreading heat broadly while leaving the processor at a similar level, or it can protect processor performance while making a larger area of the chassis feel warm. A claim about one measurement should not be presented as proof about the others.
What published improvement figures actually mean
The following numbers are manufacturer-reported comparisons for named products and conditions. They are not independent, cross-device test results.
| Source and model | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| OPPO, Find X5 Pro (2022) | Vapor chamber 75% larger than the prior generation | OPPO’s comparison with the previous generation |
| OPPO, Find X5 Pro (2022) | 50% improvement in graphene-film thermal conductivity | Compared with OPPO’s first-generation process |
| OPPO, Find X5 Pro (2022) | 2–3°C lower phone temperature while gaming with the Ice-skin case attached | OPPO report; the case was available in China at the time |
| Samsung, Galaxy Note9 (2018) | Thermal spreader volume of 350 mm³ versus 95 mm³ in the Galaxy S9 | Samsung’s comparison of those models |
| Samsung, Galaxy Note9 (2018) | Three times the heat absorption and 3.5 times the thermal conductivity versus Galaxy Note8 | Samsung’s comparison of its upgraded Note9 cooling system |
| OPPO India, K13 Turbo Series (2025) | 2–4°C cooler gaming in BGMI | Product and workload claim for BGMI |
| ASUS, ROG Phone 7 | Up to 10% improved overall thermal efficiency and up to 168% improved thermal-cycle efficiency | ASUS product-page claims; comparison details are not established in the page text |
| ASUS, AeroActive Cooler 7 | Up to 25°C lower back-cover temperature and up to 8°C lower touch-panel temperature | “Up to” claims for the accessory; not typical-result guarantees |
Because the vendors use different phones, workloads, ambient conditions, software versions and measurement points, these percentages and temperature differences cannot be combined into a universal ranking.

Look beyond the component name
“Liquid cooling” may indicate a sealed vapor chamber, not a pump, reservoir or radiator. Ask whether the specification names a heat pipe, a planar chamber, a graphite layer, a fan or a thermoelectric element. Also check whether the part is built into the phone or supplied as an external accessory.

Check the heat path
A chamber’s stated area is meaningful only when it covers the hot component and connects to the layers that can absorb and release heat. A large nominal chamber with poor interface contact may perform differently from a smaller chamber integrated into a better-conducted stack.

Separate comfort from speed
Look for the measurement point and workload behind any claim. A lower back-cover reading, a lower touch-panel reading and higher sustained frame rate are different outcomes. Do not treat one as a substitute for the others.
Expect software to participate
Thermal algorithms can change clock rates, charging behavior and application performance. Samsung Senior Engineer Haejin Lee summarizes the relationship succinctly: “The cooling system continues to work while the smartphone is in use.” Hardware and software operate together throughout a long session rather than only during a brief peak.
Common misconceptions
“Liquid cooling means a pumped loop.”
Not necessarily. In many phones, the term refers to a sealed two-phase heat spreader. Fluid evaporates and condenses inside the chamber, while a wick returns the liquid. That is different from a pump-driven loop with tubing and a separate radiator.
“A vapor chamber removes heat from the phone.”
It moves heat away from a concentrated source and distributes it. The phone still has to transfer the energy through its enclosure to the surrounding air.
“A larger chamber guarantees higher performance.”
Area is only one variable. Contact resistance, chamber thickness, graphite coverage, enclosure materials, ambient temperature and software limits determine how much sustained performance a particular design can deliver.
“A cooler temperature claim applies to every game and phone.”
Vendor figures are tied to a model, workload and test setup. The reported K13 Turbo result, for example, is specifically for BGMI, while the ASUS figures are product-page claims for the ROG Phone 7 and its accessory.
Bottom line
Smartphone cooling is a coordinated thermal path. Heat pipes move energy along narrow routes; vapor chambers spread it across a plane; copper, graphite, graphene and interface materials connect those devices to larger parts of the chassis; and active fans or Peltier accessories add powered heat transfer in selected designs. The final result is determined by the entire assembly and by software thermal controls. Treat “liquid cooling,” temperature reductions and efficiency percentages as descriptions of a particular implementation, not guarantees that one cooling label will outperform every other phone.
