Many smart glasses use a companion phone app and Bluetooth to connect, but what they can do after pairing depends on the model. Ray-Ban Meta glasses, for example, use the Meta AI app for setup, calls and message alerts, and importing photos and videos. They do not put every phone notification on a lens display; Meta Ray-Ban Display is a separate example designed to show information visually.
Do smart glasses connect to your phone?
For Ray-Ban Meta glasses, setup involves turning on Bluetooth and pairing the glasses through the Meta AI app. The app also supports connected features such as importing captures and communications. Meta notes that some functions can remain available when the glasses are not connected to the app, so a live app connection is not necessarily required for every use. Ray-Ban’s FAQ describes the setup and related functions.

Importing media is a separate step from initial Bluetooth pairing. On iPhone, Ray-Ban’s instructions describe accepting a “Join Wi-Fi Network” request so the glasses can transfer files to the app. That Wi-Fi handoff is part of media transfer, not the method used to initially pair the glasses.

Ray-Ban Meta glasses can alert the wearer to incoming calls and messages from Messenger, WhatsApp, and the paired iPhone or Android phone, according to the Ray-Ban Meta FAQ. The FAQ also describes an “Announce Messages” feature that says the sender’s name. These are documented capabilities for this model; they do not mean that every smart-glasses brand supports the same services or call controls.

How do photos and videos get from the glasses to your phone?
- Capture with the glasses. Ray-Ban Meta uses its built-in camera to take photos and videos.
- Import through the companion app. Connect the glasses to the app and follow the transfer prompt. On iOS, that can include accepting the “Join Wi-Fi Network” request described in Ray-Ban’s transfer instructions.
- Find and share the imported file on your phone. Meta’s July 2026 explainer says imported captures are saved to the phone’s gallery. From there, users can save or share them using the phone’s available options. Meta’s explainer also describes a capture LED.
Capture on the glasses and saving to the phone are distinct parts of the workflow: a photo does not necessarily appear in the phone gallery until it has been imported. At Ray-Ban Meta’s 2023 launch, Meta described taking and directly sharing photos by voice. That launch-era description establishes product context, not that every sharing destination or voice workflow is available in every region or on current software. Meta’s 2023 announcement covers that launch capability.
Do notifications show up on smart glasses?
It depends on how the glasses present information. Ray-Ban Meta’s documented call and message alerts are associated with audio and connected services; they are not evidence that messages appear as text in the wearer’s field of view. Meta Ray-Ban Display, by contrast, has a visual display. Its official FAQ says it can connect Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, and an iPhone or Android phone for calls and messages. That is a model-specific example of visual access, not a feature to assume on camera glasses generally.

What to check when comparing smart glasses
Before relying on a phone feature, confirm it for the exact glasses model, phone, software, and region. Useful questions include:
- Does setup require Bluetooth pairing and a particular companion app?
- Are calls handled through audio, a glasses-camera view, or both?
- Where are captures stored, and what steps move them to the phone?
- Which phone, calling, and messaging apps are supported?
- Are notifications announced aloud, or shown on an in-lens display?
- Are the feature and app available in your country and on your software version?
Smart glasses are not a uniform category. Ray-Ban Meta documents one audio-first, camera-equipped approach; Meta Ray-Ban Display documents a model with a visual display. Check the manufacturer’s current instructions for any other model rather than assuming its pairing or notification behavior matches either one.
