In the tested systems, a Ryzen 7 5800X3D delivered broadly similar gaming performance on an X370 motherboard and a newer X570 board. That does not mean every X370 board supports the processor, or that every game and configuration will perform identically: compatibility depends on the exact board and BIOS, and older multi-board testing found a few game-specific differences.
What the X370-versus-X570 comparison found
Club386 reported on an August 2026 comparison by Linus Tech Tips that paired a 2017-era X370 motherboard with an X570 board. Both systems used a Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. The reported gaming and synthetic benchmark differences were negligible in that setup. The report does not provide a dependable set of numerical benchmark deltas, so it supports a broad finding of similar results—not a precise percentage or a guarantee for every build. One important limitation was that the two systems’ RAM could not be run at the same speed. Memory speed and board-level differences therefore complicate a direct comparison. The result is useful evidence that the older chipset need not impose an obvious gaming penalty with this CPU, but it is not a perfectly controlled test proving that chipset age never matters.
What earlier testing says about motherboard variation
In a separate 2022 test, TechSpot compared the 5800X3D across multiple AM4 motherboards using four DDR4-3200 modules in a dual-rank, dual-channel CL14 configuration and a Radeon RX 6900 XT with Smart Access Memory enabled. Results were close across many boards, but not identical in every workload. TechSpot’s multi-board testing
#1 Best Overall
- Powerful Gaming Performance
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 3" architecture
- 4.8 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 36 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the AMD Socket AM4 platform, with PCIe 4.0 support
- AMD Wraith Prism Cooler with RGB LED included
- Multi-core Cinebench scores showed a 5% difference between the lowest- and highest-scoring boards in that test.
- Photoshop scores were within 1% across the tested boards.
- One Gigabyte board trailed the Asus X370 boards by about 8% in Factorio.
- Watch Dogs: Legion varied by up to 4% among the tested AM4 motherboards.
- Death Stranding was GPU-limited in the tested setup, and the boards delivered the same performance.
These findings are specific to the boards, components, settings, and workloads TechSpot tested. They show why “X370 versus X570” is not the only variable: individual board design, firmware, memory settings, and whether a game is CPU- or GPU-limited can affect the outcome.
Does an X370 motherboard support the 5800X3D?
Some X370 motherboards do, but the chipset name alone cannot confirm compatibility. Check the CPU support list for your exact motherboard model and hardware revision, then follow that board’s BIOS update instructions and prerequisites.

For example, ASRock says its X370, B350, and A320 motherboards support Ryzen 5000 and 4000 series processors, including the 5800X3D, with the specified AGESA firmware. That statement applies to ASRock’s listed product families, not every manufacturer’s X370 boards. ASRock’s 300-series CPU support guidance

Tom’s Hardware noted in its 2022 review that older 300-series platforms needed BIOS with AGESA 1.2.0.6b or newer for 5800X3D support. Treat that as general historical context, not a substitute for the motherboard maker’s current support page: required versions and update paths vary by board. Tom’s Hardware’s 5800X3D review
Before installing the processor
- Read the model name and hardware revision printed on the motherboard or shown in its documentation.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model and revision, and check its CPU support list for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
- Read the BIOS release notes and update prerequisites. Some boards require an intermediate BIOS, a particular update method, or a compatible older CPU before the 5800X3D can boot.
- Confirm how you can perform the update. If the board cannot update BIOS without a working CPU, make sure you have access to a supported processor or another method specified by its manufacturer.
- Install the 5800X3D only after the board is on a supported BIOS. The CPU is an eight-core, 16-thread AM4 processor with 96 MB of L3 cache and a 105 W TDP; Tom’s Hardware says it does not include a cooler. Tom’s Hardware’s specifications and review
What X570 adds beyond gaming frame rates
The reported comparison distinguishes chipset I/O from game performance. It describes X370 as offering PCIe Gen 3 and X570 as offering PCIe Gen 4, which can matter for compatible graphics cards and storage devices, including potential SSD transfer speeds. That platform difference does not itself establish a frame-rate loss in the cited gaming comparison. Club386’s X370/X570 comparison

- AMD's fastest 8 core processor for mainstream desktop, with 16 procesing threads. OS Support-Windows 10 64-Bit Edition
- Can deliver elite 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- Cooler not included, high-performance cooler recommended
- 4.7 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 36 MB of cache, DDR-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on X570 and B550 motherboards
If your X370 board is supported, stable, and has the connections you need, keeping it for a CPU upgrade may avoid replacing a working motherboard. Moving to X570 can make sense if you specifically need its newer I/O features, but a board swap adds compatibility checks and cost; no current motherboard prices were established in the cited material.

How to decide whether to keep your X370 board
- Keep it if the exact board revision lists the 5800X3D, you can complete the required BIOS update, and its PCIe and storage options meet your needs.
- Plan for a board change if the manufacturer does not list CPU support, the required BIOS cannot be installed with the resources available to you, or you need platform features the board lacks.
- Judge performance in context if you are troubleshooting a specific game. Confirm memory settings, firmware, GPU limits, and board-specific results before attributing a difference to the chipset alone.
