Don’t rely on simply sizing up: test the shoe on a slope, and choose a different width, volume, or shape if adjustment cannot fix slipping or pressure.
How much room should trail-running shoes have?
REI’s Trail-Running Shoes Buying Guide, updated November 11, 2025, suggests about a thumbnail’s length of space at the toe and enough room to wiggle. The Washington Trails Association (WTA) recommends at least a half-inch, especially for downhill hiking, in its guide to choosing hiking footwear. These are practical recommendations, not a single universal measurement; toe-box shape and the rest of the shoe’s fit matter too.

Your toes should not touch the front when you walk downhill. Extra length alone is not the answer if it makes the heel slip or leaves the shoe rubbing elsewhere. A wider toe box can help toes spread, but REI notes that excess room may cause rubbing or hot spots on narrower feet.

- Try both shoes. Fit the larger foot, and try shoes late in the day, when feet tend to be largest. Wear the socks and insoles you expect to use, including orthotics if applicable, as REI advises.
- Check the heel, midfoot, and toe box. The heel should sit securely and the midfoot should feel held, not squeezed. Make sure toes can move; check for pressure across the top of the foot and along the sides.
- Walk, then test an incline. Move around in the shoes and, if possible, walk on a sloped surface. REI’s hiking footwear fitting advice recommends moving around and watching for toe impact on an incline; WTA likewise advises testing footwear on slopes.
- Adjust before changing size. Snug lacing can help secure the foot without overtightening. A runner’s loop may help with heel slip. If the heel still lifts, toes hit the front, or the shoe pinches or rubs, try a different size, width, volume, or brand shape.
Brands use different lasts, which can vary in midfoot width, heel width, and overall volume. If you are unsure whether the issue is width, arch length, or volume, a fit specialist can help assess it.

How should they feel on downhill trails?
On a descent, your foot tends to move forward inside the shoe. The fit passes the test when your toes do not strike the front and your heel remains secure. If your toes hit, first check lacing and heel hold; if the problem persists, try another shoe shape or size. A longer shoe that lets your foot slide may trade toe impact for heel slip rather than solve the fit.

Yes, trail-running shoes can work for hiking, but the right choice depends on the route, pack weight, and how accustomed your feet are to the terrain. REI’s guide to trail-running shoes describes rugged-trail shoes as designed for hiking trails and suggests considering off-trail models for hiking, backpacking, or thru-hiking when added durability and support are priorities.
Rank #2
- Rugged outsole: Grippy lugs on the outsole are made with carbon rubber for rock-solid footing.
- Versatile cushioning: A moderate stack VERSARUN cushioning packs plenty of underfoot comfort no matter the destination.
- Durable protection: The trail-specific mesh with supportive overlays locks your foot into place and protects from debris without looking or feeling bulky.
- Lighter footprint: This style contains recycled materials.
Match the outsole to the ground as well as the fit. REI describes shallower, closely spaced lugs as suited to hard-packed, even surfaces, while deeper, widely spaced lugs are aimed at loose, wet, or muddy terrain. Those deeper lugs may feel less comfortable on hard, even ground.

What to compare when choosing between shoes
- Toe-box shape and width: enough space for movement without excess that allows rubbing.
- Heel hold: secure on level ground and on a slope, with lacing adjustments that do not create pressure.
- Overall volume: the shoe should accommodate your foot and usual socks or orthotics without pinching or letting the foot slide.
- Protection and stability: consider the ruggedness of the route and whether added durability and support matter for your hike.
- Lug pattern: choose for the surface you expect, balancing traction on loose or wet ground against comfort on hard-packed trails.
