That yields 40 bits of possible search space. It is a practical engineering starting point, not a proven usability optimum or a universal security standard; the right design also depends on how many rooms are active, how quickly guesses can be made, how long codes remain valid, and what joining the room allows.
A practical starting point: eight characters from 32 symbols
With 32 possible symbols in each position, an eight-character code has 328 possible values: 1,099,511,627,776. If every value is selected uniformly and independently, that corresponds to 40 bits of search space. Use an alphabet that avoids characters players can easily confuse, and generate each code with a cryptographically secure random generator.
Eight characters is a balance to try when people must type a temporary invitation. It is not a research-backed best length for every game or player group: the available guidance does not establish a room-code usability optimum. If manual entry is a burden, make sharing or scanning an alternative rather than assuming that shortening the code is the only solution.
Length helps only when codes are unpredictable
A code’s effective search space depends on how it is generated, not just how many characters it displays. A counter, predictable pattern, fixed prefix, or biased random selection can make a code easier to guess than its nominal length suggests. OWASP’s Session Management Cheat Sheet warns that predictable parts reduce effective entropy and may require greater length to compensate. Although that guidance is about session identifiers, the underlying principle applies to room codes too.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not confuse an invitation code with a login credential. A room code should let a player request entry to one room; it should not establish account identity or grant broad authorization. For authenticated session secrets, the bar is higher: OWASP says session identifiers need at least 64 bits of entropy and advises at least 128 bits for a custom session ID. NIST SP 800-63B-4 (2025 edition) requires session-binding secrets to contain at least 64 bits and to time out. These are requirements or recommendations for session security, not a rule that every multiplayer room code must contain 64 bits.
Keep guessing risk under control
A short code can be workable for a temporary, low-consequence invitation when the service limits attempts and expires codes appropriately. OWASP notes that brute-force difficulty depends on entropy, the number of valid identifiers, expiration, and an attacker’s guessing rate. For illustration, its session-ID guidance describes approximately 585 years to guess under assumptions of 100,000 valid session IDs and 10,000 guesses per second. That scenario concerns session IDs; it is not a forecast or guarantee for room codes.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Throttle failed join attempts, especially when many guesses come from one account, device, or network.
- Monitor repeated failures and apply stronger restrictions when behavior looks automated.
- Scope each code to one room and reject it when that room closes or its short validity period ends.
- Do not let a successful code bypass authentication or other access checks that the room requires.
How strict these controls should be depends on the consequences of a successful guess. A casual private match and a room containing sensitive content should not rely on the same invitation policy.
Plan for collisions among active rooms
Even random codes can collide. In a shared namespace with 100,000 simultaneously active rooms, independently drawing codes from the 328 space gives an approximately 0.45% chance of at least one collision before any uniqueness check. This is a birthday-probability calculation based on those assumptions, not a published benchmark. The probability changes with the number of live codes sharing the namespace; splitting rooms by region, mode, or time period reduces the relevant population.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Enforce uniqueness among active codes: reserve a generated value, check whether it is already in use, and regenerate if it is. This prevents a duplicate live code from directing a player to the wrong room. Retire the reservation when the code expires or the room closes.
Make joining easy without weakening the code
Human entry is a separate design problem from resistance to guessing. Use clearly displayed characters, avoid visually similar symbols, and provide copy-and-share or a deep link where the platform supports them. A QR code can also avoid manual transcription. Apple’s GameKit documentation describes a party-code flow in which players can share a code in game chat or copy it for sharing outside the game; it does not prescribe a character count.

Choose the join method around how players actually meet: typing may suit a voice-chat group, while a link or QR code can be simpler when players are on the same screen or device. Keep the code itself scoped, temporary, and protected by attempt limits regardless of the sharing method.

Do not use a 40-bit room invitation as a durable bearer credential or as the only protection for account access, sensitive data, or high-impact actions. In those cases, rely on an authenticated session or a stronger secret designed for that purpose, and treat room membership as a separate authorization decision. OWASP’s session guidance and NIST’s SP 800-63B-4 address authenticated session secrets, not room-invitation length.
