How SEO Fits Into Each of Your Marketing Channels

SEO helps search engines understand your website and helps people discover its pages through unpaid search. It is most direct on your website, but useful site content can also be shared through social media, email, video and paid campaigns. Those channels can support distribution; that does not mean SEO controls their reach or directly raises organic rankings.

How does SEO fit into a marketing strategy?

Think of SEO as the work that makes your website’s content easier for search engines to understand and for people to find. Google groups its Search Essentials guidance into technical requirements, spam policies and key best practices. Those best practices include publishing helpful, reliable, people-first content; using the words readers search for in prominent, descriptive places; and making links crawlable. The details also vary by format, including images and video. See Google Search Essentials and its SEO Starter Guide.

SEO is therefore most directly connected to the website and the pages a business wants people to find. A useful, well-organized page can serve as a destination from organic search and can also be shared or referenced elsewhere. That makes SEO part of a connected plan—not a control panel for every marketing channel. Meeting Google’s requirements does not guarantee that it will crawl, index or show a page.

What the channel figures do—and do not—show

HubSpot’s 2026 multi-channel content report says 44.58% of surveyed marketers use website/blog/SEO and 26.58% identify it as their top-performing channel. The same report lists paid social at 39% use and 25% top-performing, and organic social at 40% and 23%, respectively. These are figures from that report, not universal market estimates; the available report result did not expose detailed methodology. See HubSpot’s marketing statistics.

How does SEO work with social media and email marketing?

Social media

Social posts can put a useful article, product page or guide in front of an audience and invite discussion. Google also advises site owners to tell people about their site and participate in relevant communities. That is a distribution role: the guidance cited here does not establish that social engagement directly improves organic rankings. Keep the content useful on its own rather than treating social activity as a ranking shortcut.

Email marketing

Email can deliver a relevant page to people who already hear from a business. For example, a newsletter can link to a detailed guide that readers may want to save or share. This is simply another route to the page; the cited guidance does not establish an SEO effect on email deliverability, list growth or search rank.

Where do paid campaigns, video and other formats fit?

Paid search and display

Advertising is useful when a campaign needs paid reach, timing or targeting controls. Google describes PPC as paid advertising that can be targeted and adjusted, while SEO aims to improve organic visibility. The two can serve different goals, but buying an ad does not buy an organic position: Google states that advertising does not affect a site’s organic search presence. See Google’s SEO vs. PPC overview and Search Essentials.

Video and images

Images and videos can be part of web content that appears in Google Search, and Google provides format-specific guidance. That makes discoverability of those pages relevant to SEO, but it does not mean web SEO governs discovery on every video platform. Use the guidance for the format and platform involved rather than assuming one optimization covers all of them.

Local marketing

SEO can be part of a business’s broader web presence, but the guidance cited here does not establish particular local-ranking factors or map-listing tactics. Avoid treating general SEO advice as a guaranteed local visibility formula.

Is SEO better than PPC?

Neither is universally better; they use different cost models and offer different degrees of timing and control. The choice depends on whether the priority is building organic discoverability or buying adjustable visibility for a campaign.

Consideration SEO PPC
Cost model Work to improve organic visibility; Google says appearing in Search itself costs no money. Paid advertising, commonly based on clicks or impressions, with campaign spend.
Speed and control Requires work and does not guarantee a particular ranking. Campaigns can be adjusted for paid visibility and targeting.
Duration Builds the site’s organic presence; no particular duration or result is guaranteed. Runs according to campaign settings and spend.
Typical planning role Longer-term organic discoverability. Immediate or targeted paid reach.

Google Search Central puts the distinction plainly: “It doesn’t cost any money to appear in Google Search, no matter what anyone tries to tell you.” That refers to organic inclusion, not separate paid ads. Google does not prescribe a universal budget split between SEO and PPC.

What are safe first steps for SEO?

  1. Start with the reader’s need. Create useful, reliable content that answers a real question, rather than writing only to repeat search terms.
  2. Make pages understandable. Use descriptive titles, headings and links, and place relevant language where it accurately describes the page.
  3. Check the technical basics. Ensure important pages can be reached through crawlable links and follow guidance appropriate to their content format.
  4. Use Search Console for information. Google recommends Search Console as a first-party source of information about how a site performs in Google Search. Treat it as a measurement resource, not a promise of ranking gains.
  5. Review SEO advice critically. Google lists services professionals may offer, including content or site-structure reviews, technical development advice, redirects and JavaScript advice, content development, keyword research, training and market or geography expertise. Compare a provider’s claims with Google’s guidance on hiring an SEO. Google warns that unethical or aggressive tactics can damage visibility or lead to removal from its index; no provider can guarantee ranking success.

For organic search, Google says inclusion is not something a business buys. Paid ads remain a separate option when a campaign needs paid reach, while a useful website can give the rest of the marketing plan a destination to share.
