A seasonal wipe is not a standard, all-or-nothing rule across extraction shooters. One game may reset only a seasonal character, another may let you reset voluntarily, and a historical server wipe may have followed entirely different rules. To know what you will lose, identify the game, mode, reset trigger and each progression category separately.
Current official examples show three distinct models: Escape from Tarkov separates seasonal characters from its other profiles; ARC Raiders has described a voluntary Expedition reset; and Hunt: Showdown documented a one-time prelaunch wipe in 2019. Those examples are useful precisely because they do not work the same way.

What a seasonal wipe actually is
In an extraction shooter, a wipe removes some accumulated progress so a character, mode or season can begin again. The word “wipe” does not identify the scope by itself. It might mean deleting a character’s level and inventory, resetting quests and trader reputation, clearing a single seasonal profile, or allowing a player to opt into a reset for a specific reward.

A battle pass can follow a third set of rules.

- Trigger: a fixed season boundary, major update, scheduled event or player choice.
- Scope: the whole account, one character, a game mode or selected systems.
- Lost progress: levels, skills, quests, money, equipment, inventory, crafting or workshop upgrades.
- Retained progress: cosmetics, achievements, awards, rankings, account unlocks or battle-pass records.
- Control: mandatory for everyone, optional after a task, or limited to a particular profile.
Never transfer one game’s wipe rules to another. Even two modes in the same game may reset different items.
What gets wiped?
Character-bound progression is the category most likely to reset. Developers use it to restore early-game scarcity and make progression meaningful for a new season or cycle. The exact list must come from the current announcement for the game and mode.
Levels, skills and mastery
A reset can return a character to its starting level and remove skills or weapon mastery. This changes access to equipment and abilities even if your account still owns permanent cosmetics or awards.

Inventory, currency and equipment
Items in storage, carried equipment and in-game money may be deleted. Some systems also reset the workshop or crafting capabilities that determine what you can build. A wipe may affect items you earned without touching items purchased outside the game, but that distinction is not universal.
Quests, tasks and reputation
Quest chains, task completion and trader reputation can be reset independently. A game may clear character missions while preserving account achievements or a battle-pass track.
Mode-specific records
Seasonal characters, PvP profiles, PvE profiles and arena characters can each have separate records. A reset announcement that names one profile should not be read as an account-wide deletion.

What progress carries over?
Permanent or account-level records are more likely to survive, but “likely” is not a guarantee. Read the retained list rather than assuming that every non-character item is safe.
Cosmetics and awards
Skins and other cosmetic entitlements are commonly separated from gameplay inventory. Awards may also remain while the items that helped earn them are removed.
Achievements and rankings
Achievements and leaderboard records can be retained as historical proof of what you accomplished. Some games preserve rankings even when a character’s level and equipment return to zero.
Battle-pass and account tracks
A battle pass may be shared between modes or tied to an account-wide record. It should be treated as its own progression system, not as part of the character stash.
Rewards that were not yet unlocked
Retention can depend on whether a reward was actually unlocked before the reset. An announced permanent reward is not necessarily a promise that every future or still-locked reward will remain obtainable.

Escape from Tarkov: a seasonal character is not the whole account
Battlestate Games’ Patch 1.1.0.0 introduced the Seasons system and the first season, KORD BREACH. The announcement describes Seasonal Characters as independent of both PvP Zone and PvE Zone characters. Seasonal-character progression automatically resets every four to six months when a major content update begins a new season.

That wording matters: it is inaccurate to summarize the rule as “all Tarkov progress wipes.” The cited announcement distinguishes the seasonal profile from the other two profiles. A player must therefore check which profile holds an item or achievement before predicting its fate.
Seasonal rewards have an unlock deadline
Seasonal rewards are unique trader offers unlocked by reaching level or task conditions. Rewards unlocked during KORD BREACH become permanently available across PvP Zone, PvE Zone and PvP Season. Rewards still locked when KORD BREACH ends become permanently unobtainable, according to the announcement.
This creates two separate questions: whether the character’s seasonal progression resets, and whether a reward was unlocked in time. The first does not automatically answer the second.
Battle Pass progress is a separate track
The same announcement says Battle Pass progression is shared across PvP Zone, PvE Zone and PvP Season. Do not combine that statement with the seasonal-character reset and conclude that every reward system behaves identically. Character progression, seasonal trader offers and Battle Pass progress are distinct tracks.
Tarkov Arena has its own reset list
A separate post on the official Escape from Tarkov Telegram channel describes an Arena-specific reset. It says character level, skills and weapon mastery, Ref task progress and trader reputation reset. Battle Pass and Tactical Map progress, earned rewards, Armory progress and achievements remain.
The captured channel page does not establish the post’s publication date. More importantly, this is Arena information. It should not be generalized to Seasonal Characters or to the main game’s PvP Zone and PvE Zone profiles.

ARC Raiders: an optional Expedition reset
In a developer post dated October 9, 2025, design director Virgil said the studio did not intend mandatory wipes and was developing a voluntary reset called the Expedition Project. After a player completes the project, an Expedition makes a character reset available. The post described a repeating cycle of roughly eight weeks and said incomplete project progress carries into the next completion window.
What an Expedition removes
The announced lost categories are character progress: levels, skills, items and inventory, workshop progress and crafting capabilities. These losses affect the character’s ability to operate and produce equipment, even though account-level records remain.
What an Expedition keeps
Cosmetics, awards, achievements and rankings are listed as retained. The post also says some onboarding steps and features are available from the start after an Expedition. That means the reset is designed to trade short-term character power for a repeatable progression opportunity, not to erase the player’s entire account identity.
Why the rules may change
The announcement says the benefits and details were still being finalized and that the design was subject to change. Treat the roughly eight-week cycle as the plan described on October 9, 2025, not as a permanent guarantee. Check the live game’s current announcement before deciding when to complete an Expedition.

That sentence explains the studio’s stated rationale for making the system voluntary. It is a design intention, not proof that no other future reset could ever occur.
Hunt: Showdown illustrates why dates matter
Crytek’s August 6, 2019 announcement described a server wipe ahead of Hunt: Showdown’s full launch. Money, Hunters, inventory and statistics were reset, while prestige remained. The announcement also described permanent prestige rewards.
This is a dated example of one launch transition. It does not establish the game’s current seasonal policy, and it should not be used as evidence that every future wipe will preserve prestige or use the same categories.
How to determine the rules before a reset
Use the following process whenever a developer announces a wipe, season or reset. It prevents the most common mistake: treating a headline word such as “wipe” as a complete specification.

- Record the trigger and date. Note whether the reset is tied to a major update, a scheduled season, a one-time launch event or a player-completed project.
- Separate lost and retained lists. Make two columns for levels, skills, quests, currency, inventory, workshop, crafting, cosmetics, awards, achievements, rankings and battle-pass progress.
- Check unlock conditions. Determine whether a reward must be unlocked before the deadline, or whether ownership is permanent once earned.
- Look for uncertainty language. Terms such as “planned,” “roughly,” “subject to change” and “details being finalized” mean you should not treat the announcement as a final operating manual.
- Confirm the live rule at the deadline. Re-read the latest official patch notes or developer announcement immediately before committing items or choosing an optional reset.
Practical preparation before a mandatory wipe
Finish time-limited unlocks first
If a seasonal reward becomes unobtainable when the season ends, prioritize the level or task requirement that unlocks it. Cosmetic ownership and character inventory are different questions; securing the reward may matter more than stockpiling items that will disappear.
Spend or transfer only when the rules allow it
Do not assume currency, equipment or materials can be moved to another profile. A seasonal character that is independent from PvP and PvE profiles may not provide a transfer route. Verify the supported storage and transfer rules rather than risking a trade based on a community interpretation.
Capture records you want to remember
If statistics or task history are listed as lost, save screenshots or other personal records before the reset. This does not preserve in-game progress, but it prevents a historical achievement from being difficult to document later.
Separate permanent entitlements from usable items
An account cosmetic, award or achievement may survive while the weapon, material or crafting capability used with it does not. Organize your preparation around the retained category named by the developer, not around the item’s visual appearance.

Questions to ask when a game says “wipe”
- Is the reset mandatory, optional or limited to players who complete a project?
- Does it affect one character, one mode or the entire account?
- Are levels and skills reset separately from inventory?
- Do quests, trader reputation, currency and crafting unlocks have their own entries?
- Are cosmetics, awards, achievements and rankings account-wide?
- Does battle-pass progress use a shared track?
- Must seasonal rewards be unlocked before a specific deadline?
- Is the cadence final, or is it an estimate that may change?
- Is the source describing a current policy or a historical event?
These questions turn an ambiguous wipe announcement into a usable checklist. Without answers for the exact game and mode, “everything resets” is usually too broad to be reliable.
