How Scientists Use Lasers to Measure Quantum Systems Without Changing Them Too Much

Scientists cannot measure a quantum system with absolutely zero effect. Instead, they design the light–matter interaction so that each probe extracts only the information needed, targets an observable that is relatively protected, or spreads the measurement over repeated interactions. Detuned (dispersive) laser probes, weak measurements and quantum-nondemolition (QND) techniques can make back-action small or confine it to variables the experiment is not using.

The result is not a “do-nothing” measurement. It is a calibrated compromise between information and disturbance, with technical noise and unintended excitation controlled well enough that the remaining change can be identified as quantum back-action.

Why every quantum measurement has a back-action problem

In classical physics, observing a system can be treated as a passive act. Quantum mechanics is different: a measurement couples the system to a detector, and the information gained is tied to a change in the system’s state. This is called quantum back-action. As Jürgen Volz and colleagues put it in their 2011 Nature paper, “A measurement necessarily changes the quantum state being measured, a phenomenon known as back-action.” (Nature, 2011)

“Without changing it too much” therefore has a precise experimental meaning. Researchers may reduce the size of the state change, make the change predictable, or choose an observable whose value can be measured repeatedly without the usual disturbance to that same observable. Other properties can still change. A method that avoids energy exchange, for example, is not automatically a method that leaves the entire quantum state untouched.

The central design trade-off is information versus disturbance. A stronger probe usually puts more information into the detected light, but it can also scatter more photons, heat or excite atoms, destroy coherence, or alter the motion being studied. A weaker probe causes less change per interaction, but its individual result is less informative and may require averaging many trials or repeating the interaction.

How a laser reads atoms without relying on absorption

Detuning the probe from resonance

In a dispersive measurement, the laser frequency is set far from an atomic resonance. The light then interacts with the atoms primarily by acquiring a phase shift rather than by being resonantly absorbed as the readout signal. The phase and intensity of the outgoing light carry information about the atomic ensemble.

Detuning reduces resonant absorption; it does not make the probe harmless. Some photons are still spontaneously scattered, and those scattered photons carry information about the atoms. That information leaks into the environment and can reduce quantum coherence. Increasing the probe power or interaction time generally improves the optical signal while increasing this scattering channel.

The 2023 condensate experiment

Altuntaş and Spielman studied an ultracold Bose–Einstein condensate with a far-from-resonant laser. Rather than calling the measurement perfectly nondestructive, they measured how much the condensate changed. A Ramsey interferometer supplied two observables: the phase shift of the matter-wave interference and its contrast. A phase change indicates how the measured state evolved; reduced contrast indicates lost coherence.

The authors compared those observations with a measurement model that includes scattering. Their abstract summarizes the weak-measurement principle this way: “Weak measurements produce only limited information about the system, and as a result only minimally change the system’s state.” Read the publication at Communications Physics (8 April 2023) and the corresponding NIST publication record.

That experiment is a useful model for the phrase “without changing them too much”: the team quantified the change, identified the dominant quantum channel and checked that technical effects were not being mistaken for intrinsic back-action.

What happens during a low-disturbance laser measurement

  1. Prepare a known state. The atoms, photons or other quantum object are initialized in a state whose relevant observable is defined. In an ultracold-atom experiment, this can mean preparing a condensate and setting the interferometer sequence.
  2. Choose the observable and probe strength. The experimenter decides whether the goal is atom number, an internal state, photon number, a phase or a many-body quantity. Laser detuning, intensity, pulse duration and cavity interaction time determine how strongly the probe couples.
  3. Interact off resonance or through an engineered coupling. A far-detuned beam can acquire a phase shift from the atoms. A cavity can enhance the interaction with a selected mode. The coupling is engineered so that useful information appears in the light before unwanted transitions dominate.
  4. Read the optical signal. Detectors measure phase, transmission, reflection, photon counts or interference contrast. Detector efficiency matters: lost information can require a stronger probe, which increases back-action.
  5. Measure the state after probing. Ramsey phase and contrast, atom loss, heating or another calibrated diagnostic reveals what the probe changed. Without this step, a bright signal alone cannot establish that the measurement was gentle.
  6. Compare with a physical model and controls. The measured change is separated into spontaneous scattering, technical intensity gradients, stray reflections, collisions and other effects. Only the residual consistent with the model can be assigned to quantum back-action.
  7. Repeat when the protocol allows it. Weak or QND schemes can accumulate information over many interactions. Repetition is useful only if the chosen observable remains sufficiently stable and the measurement itself does not introduce an untracked drift.

Weak measurement, QND measurement and low-loss probing are different

Approach What is deliberately limited or protected What can still change
Weak measurement Information gained in one interaction is small, so the state update per result is limited. Repeated probes, accumulated information and technical noise can still produce substantial overall change.
Quantum nondemolition (QND) A selected observable is measured in a way intended to avoid the usual disturbance to that observable, enabling repeated measurements in suitable systems. Conjugate variables, other observables, energy, motion or coherence may be disturbed.
Low-loss or energy-preserving measurement Particle loss or energy exchange is minimized or avoided in the stated operating regime. The quantum state can still acquire a phase, become entangled with a detector or lose coherence through information leakage.

These categories can overlap in one apparatus, but they are not synonyms. A single-atom cavity experiment, for example, measured an internal state without energy exchange; its claim is specifically about energy exchange, not about eliminating every state change (Volz et al., 2011).

How the main laser-based strategies compare

Example System and observable Information strategy Back-action and repeatability
Dispersive condensate probe Ultracold atomic ensemble; phase and coherence measured with a Ramsey interferometer. Far-detuned light reads an optical phase shift. Spontaneous scattering reduces coherence; beam and reflection artifacts must be controlled. The study directly models and measures the change (2023 paper).
Photonic-qubit weak/QND scheme A single photonic qubit; a chosen qubit property. Interaction strength can be varied continuously into the weak regime. Each result carries limited information, allowing a small state update per interaction (Pryde et al., 2004).
Single atom in an optical cavity One atom; its internal state. Cavity-assisted readout distinguishes the state through the optical response. Designed to avoid energy exchange, while general measurement back-action remains possible (Volz et al., 2011).
Single-photon cavity detection Photon number restricted to zero or one photon. An atomic interferometer detects the phase shift caused by the photon. The photon can be detected without being absorbed in the demonstrated regime; the scope is limited to the stated zero/one-photon states (Nogues et al., 1999).
Repeated QND photon counting Photon number in a cavity. Atoms pass through the cavity as probes, and successive results update the photon-number estimate. Repeated interactions progressively narrow the inferred number, provided the cavity and probes remain controlled (Guerlin et al., 2007).
Many-body Hamiltonian QND proposal A collective quantity in a many-body quantum system. The protocol targets a Hamiltonian-related observable rather than an individual particle. The paper explicitly models measurement back-action; its proposal should not be read as proof that every many-body measurement is routine laboratory practice (Yang et al., 2020).

These are different tasks and platforms, not a single head-to-head performance ranking. The meaningful questions are which observable is measured, how much information arrives per interaction, what variable is disturbed, whether repetition is possible, and how well technical artifacts are excluded.

Why cavities and repeated probes help

An optical cavity sends light through the same interaction region many times or enhances the response of a selected mode. That can increase the signal obtained from a given amount of spontaneous scattering, improving the information-to-disturbance ratio. The cavity does not repeal quantum mechanics: photons can still leak, atoms can still recoil, and the measured phase can still entangle the system with the field.

Repeated QND photon counting illustrates a different advantage. Each atom crossing the cavity supplies a partial update, and many updates progressively narrow the probability distribution for photon number. The protocol works because photon number is the selected observable and the interaction is engineered so that its value can be interrogated repeatedly. A later measurement of a conjugate field variable would not necessarily be nondemolition.

In the 1995 demonstration of repeated back-action-evading measurements, the reported conditional variance reached 1.8 dB below shot noise. That number belongs to that specific optical experiment; it is not a performance figure for the 2023 condensate laser probe (Bencheikh et al., Physical Review Letters).

Technical controls are as important as the quantum design

Probe-beam inhomogeneity

A beam that is brighter in one part of the cloud than another applies a position-dependent light shift. Atoms then experience different phases or forces, creating apparent decoherence or excitation that is not the fundamental back-action of the intended measurement. Spatial profiling, calibration and controlled beam geometry are needed to identify and reduce this effect.

Back-reflected light and weak optical lattices

Even a weak reflection from a window, mirror or other optic can interfere with the probe and form a shallow optical lattice. That lattice can drive motion or excitation in the sample. The condensate work treated weak back-reflections as a possible source of atom loss and excitation rather than assuming that the nominally weak field was irrelevant.

Scattering, collisions and loss

Spontaneously scattered photons reveal information about the atoms and reduce coherence. Light-induced collisions can remove atoms or alter their motion. The 2023 study examined these effects and found limited impact on its Ramsey data under its operating conditions, but that result is conditional on its apparatus and calibration; it is not a universal limit for all laser measurements.

Detector efficiency and calibration

Unrecorded photons still interact with the system even when the detector misses them. A credible disturbance budget therefore includes collection efficiency, camera or photodiode noise, laser-frequency noise, intensity noise and timing jitter. Controls with the probe blocked, detuned farther, or sent through an empty path help separate these contributions.

What “nondestructive” should mean in a serious experiment

“Nondestructive” is an operational description, not a promise of zero change. A measurement may be nondestructive with respect to photon number, atom loss or internal-state energy while still changing phase, momentum or coherence. The relevant claim must specify the observable, the time interval, the allowed error and the conditions under which the result was obtained.

For a new experiment, ask five questions:

  • Which observable is protected, and which variables are allowed to change?
  • How much information does one probe interaction add?
  • What physical channel carries back-action: scattering, recoil, entanglement, cavity leakage or detector coupling?
  • How are beam nonuniformity, reflections, collisions and technical noise measured independently?
  • Can the same observable be measured again, and does the inferred value remain consistent?

A result that reports only low atom loss is incomplete if phase coherence has not been checked. Conversely, a visible phase shift is not automatically destructive if it is the intended, reversible signal and the protected observable remains intact.

Related effects: when measurement changes later evolution

Measurement back-action can be used deliberately rather than merely suppressed. In the quantum Zeno effect, frequent measurements inhibit or reshape a system’s evolution because each measurement resets or projects part of the state. A 2026 Nature Communications study used an optical trap as a measurement pulse and monitored atomic loss to observe a quantum Zeno effect in the spatial motion of a single atom (Fang et al., 2026). This is a related example of measurement controlling dynamics, not a direct demonstration that a far-detuned probe is gentle.

The broader lesson is that back-action is not simply “noise.” It is a physical interaction that can be minimized, redirected to an unimportant variable, modeled to improve an estimate, or harnessed to control evolution.

The practical bottom line for interpreting laser measurements

Scientists make laser measurements gentle by lowering the information gained per interaction, detuning from resonance, enhancing a carefully chosen interaction in a cavity, or measuring a QND observable repeatedly. They then verify the cost with interferometric phase, contrast, loss, heating or another state diagnostic. No single detuning, cavity or detector setting guarantees negligible disturbance across all quantum systems.

The strongest evidence is therefore not the phrase “nondestructive” by itself. It is a quantitative disturbance model, measurements of the state before and after probing, and controls that rule out technical artifacts. That combination lets researchers learn about a quantum system while changing it only within a specified, measured tolerance.
