How Scientists Use Ground Deformation and Gas Measurements to Forecast Volcanic Eruptions

Scientists forecast volcanic eruptions by combining several changing signals rather than waiting for one measurement to reach a universal threshold. Ground-deformation instruments show how a volcano’s surface is moving, which helps constrain processes beneath it. Gas observations provide chemical evidence about magma and the hydrothermal system. Analysts interpret both streams with earthquake activity, the volcano’s past behavior, visual observations and satellite data.

Inflation can indicate pressure or magma accumulation, but swelling is not a countdown to an eruption. Deflation, fault movement, hydrothermal changes and other processes can produce similar patterns. The result is a probabilistic assessment that becomes more or less concerning as multiple independent observations change together.

What a volcanic-eruption forecast actually means

A forecast is an assessment of changing activity and the likelihood of an eruption or other hazardous behavior. It is not a precise appointment with a date and time. A volcano may show unrest for days, months or years without erupting, and an eruption can begin with limited warning when monitoring coverage is sparse.

Scientists look for a coherent sequence: deformation that fits a plausible subsurface source, earthquakes or tremor that indicate fracturing or fluid movement, gas changes that support increased magmatic or hydrothermal activity, and surface or satellite observations that agree with the pattern. The volcano’s history matters because a signal that preceded past eruptions at one volcano may have a different meaning at another.

The U.S. Geological Survey’s 2024 recommendations for volcano-monitoring capabilities treat ground deformation and volcanic-gas monitoring as separate but complementary observation streams. Hawaiian Volcano Observatory guidance describes deformation as an important indicator of what is happening beneath a volcano, while also stressing that faults can create deformation and earthquakes without magma approaching the surface.

How ground-deformation monitoring works

Geodesy is the measurement of the Earth’s shape and movement. At a volcano, observatories install instruments on the ground and compare observations through time. Three commonly used tools provide different views.

GNSS stations, including GPS

Continuous Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations determine the position of fixed points on a volcano. GPS is one example of a GNSS system. A time series can show whether a station is moving toward or away from another station, rising or sinking, or changing direction as the deformation field evolves.

GNSS is valuable because it provides repeatable, three-dimensional position changes at a known location. A network can reveal whether movement is concentrated near a crater, spread across a flank or arranged in a pattern consistent with a deeper source. Its limitation is coverage: a station only measures where it is installed, and rugged terrain, equipment failure or poor communications can leave gaps.

Borehole and surface tiltmeters

Tiltmeters measure very small changes in the slope of the ground at an instrument site. A tiltmeter may respond quickly to pressure changes close to the instrument, making it useful for detecting local deformation that a wider-spaced positioning network could miss.

Tilt is a local measurement, so interpretation depends strongly on the instrument’s setting and environmental conditions. Analysts compare several stations and remove signals caused by temperature, rainfall, equipment behavior or other non-volcanic effects before deciding whether a pattern is meaningful.

Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR)

InSAR compares radar observations acquired by satellites on different passes. The resulting interferogram maps changes in the distance between the ground and the spacecraft across a broad area. This can reveal deformation where no ground station exists and can show the spatial footprint of inflation, subsidence or flank movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

InSAR does not directly provide a simple “up” or “down” map. It measures displacement along the satellite’s line of sight. Horizontal and vertical components may be mixed, so scientists generally combine the radar result with GNSS, topography and physical models to infer the underlying motion.

Acquisition timing also matters. Satellites do not observe every volcano continuously, and repeat intervals vary by mission and location. Vegetation, changing atmospheric water vapor, snow, ash and other surface or atmospheric conditions can reduce the quality of a radar comparison. A satellite image therefore may confirm that movement occurred between two dates without showing exactly when the change happened.

What each deformation method contributes

Method Primary measurement Useful view Important limitation
GNSS/GPS stations Position change at installed stations Continuous time series and network geometry Coverage depends on station placement, power and communications
Tiltmeters Small changes in ground slope Rapid, local response near an instrument Highly local and sensitive to environmental or site effects
InSAR Surface displacement along radar line of sight Broad spatial coverage between satellite acquisitions Revisit timing, vegetation, atmosphere and viewing geometry affect interpretation

What inflation and deflation can tell scientists

Inflation means that part of the volcanic edifice is swelling or moving outward. One possible cause is magma accumulating in a reservoir or conduit, increasing pressure and deforming the surrounding rock. A pattern of stations moving away from a source, local tilt changes and satellite-confirmed uplift can support that interpretation.

Deflation means subsidence or inward movement. It can occur when magma leaves a reservoir, when pressure decreases after an intrusion or eruption, or when fluids in a hydrothermal system change. Deflation is not automatically reassuring: it can accompany magma migration, drainage or changes that alter hazards such as explosive activity or flank instability.

Deformation is evidence to analyze, not a direct view of magma. The same surface pattern can be produced by several sources, and a physically plausible model must be checked against earthquakes, gas, topography and the volcano’s previous episodes. Ground movement can also continue for long periods without an eruption, as the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory notes in its monitoring guidance.

What volcanic-gas measurements add

Volcanoes release gases from magma and from heated or pressurized hydrothermal systems. Monitoring teams measure gas composition and emission behavior using instruments at vents, fumaroles, crater lakes, soil sites or remote stations, depending on the volcano and the hazard.

Gas data add a geochemical perspective that deformation cannot provide. A change in composition or emission rate may indicate that magma or hydrothermal fluids are moving, depressurizing, mixing or interacting with groundwater. When gas changes occur at the same time as a deformation trend and increased seismicity, they can strengthen the case that the system is becoming more active.

There is no single gas species, ratio or concentration that forecasts an eruption at every volcano. The relevant gases, background levels, sampling methods and warning patterns differ between volcanic systems. The USGS 2024 instrumentation recommendations identify gas-composition variation as a measurable monitoring phenomenon, but do not establish a universal cross-volcano threshold.

Gas measurements also require context. Wind, rainfall, atmospheric dilution, access to a vent and changing hydrothermal pathways can affect observations. Analysts compare repeated measurements with site history and other monitoring streams instead of treating an isolated high or low reading as a trigger.

How observatories combine the signals

A practical forecast workflow is a process of checking whether independent observations tell a consistent story.

  1. Establish the baseline. Scientists document the volcano’s normal deformation rate, typical seismicity, usual gas composition and seasonal environmental effects. Without a baseline, a change cannot be distinguished from ordinary variability.
  2. Detect and verify a change. Automated systems flag unusual GNSS movement, tilt, radar displacement, earthquake rates or gas readings. Analysts check instrument health, weather, telemetry and processing artifacts before accepting the signal.
  3. Map the pattern. The location, direction and rate of movement matter. A broad, symmetric pattern has different implications from a single station moving because of a local slope or unstable ground. InSAR can reveal the footprint, while GNSS and tilt provide continuous or local time series.
  4. Test physical explanations. Teams model whether magma pressure, a migrating intrusion, hydrothermal-fluid change, fault slip or another source could produce the observations. InSAR line-of-sight measurements may require additional data to separate horizontal and vertical motion.
  5. Compare with seismicity and gas. Earthquakes, tremor, gas composition and emission rate are evaluated alongside deformation. Agreement across streams generally raises concern more than a change in only one stream.
  6. Compare with the volcano’s history. Past unrest episodes, eruption styles and known structures help determine whether the current sequence resembles a precursor, a non-eruptive intrusion or a recurring hydrothermal cycle.
  7. Update the assessment and communicate uncertainty. Observatories revise hazard assessments and alert levels as evidence changes. They describe what is observed, what interpretations are plausible and what additional changes would increase or decrease concern.

Why ground swelling does not guarantee an eruption

Fault movement can mimic volcanic inflation

Earthquakes and slow slip on faults can move the ground without new magma entering a reservoir. A fault-related deformation pattern may be real and significant while having a different hazard implication from magmatic inflation.

Hydrothermal fluids can change pressure

Water and steam circulating through hot rock can expand, drain, seal pathways or shift pressure. Those processes can deform the surface and alter gas emissions even when magma is not rising toward an eruption.

Unrest can stall

Magma may intrude and then stop, or a pressurized system may relax without breaking through to the surface. Yellowstone monitoring guidance specifically cautions that ground movement may persist for long periods without an eruption.

One instrument can be misleading

A damaged station, unstable monument, atmospheric artifact or unusual weather can create an apparent change. Confidence increases when multiple instruments, locations and measurement types show a compatible trend.

Why satellites and ground instruments are used together

Ground instruments provide high-frequency observations at fixed sites. GNSS and tiltmeters can capture rapid changes between satellite passes and continue operating during periods when clouds obscure optical imagery. Their weakness is limited spatial coverage and the practical difficulty of installing and maintaining equipment on steep or dangerous terrain.

Satellites provide repeated regional views, including areas without instruments. InSAR can reveal deformation on a whole edifice or across adjacent faults, helping scientists discover where to install or repair ground stations. Its observations are intermittent and affected by line-of-sight geometry, atmosphere, vegetation and surface change.

The USGS describes remote sensing as complementary to, rather than a replacement for, ground-based monitoring. A joint strategy can assess volcanic activity before, during and after hazardous eruptions, but the usefulness of each observation depends on acquisition timing, data quality and expert interpretation.

How much warning can these methods provide?

There is no universal “number of days before eruption” supplied by deformation or gas measurements. Warning time depends on the volcano, the type and depth of the process, the speed of escalation, instrument density, satellite revisit timing and whether the system produces recognizable precursors at all.

A continuous GNSS or gas station may detect a change soon after it begins locally, while a satellite may only show the accumulated displacement between two acquisitions. Conversely, InSAR can reveal a large area of movement that a sparse ground network would miss. These are different kinds of lead time, so a single global average would be misleading.

What the public should do with monitoring information

For a specific volcano, use updates from the responsible observatory and civil-protection authority. Alert levels, evacuation zones and aviation notices can change as new observations arrive. A general explanation of deformation and gas monitoring cannot determine whether it is safe to travel, work or live near an active volcano.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When reading an update, distinguish between an observation and its interpretation. “The summit moved” describes a measurement; “magma is rising” is a model-based explanation that may be revised. Look for the time period covered, the instruments involved, whether the signal is accelerating and whether seismicity or gas data changed at the same time.

Key takeaways

  • GNSS, tiltmeters and InSAR measure different aspects of surface movement and are strongest when used together.
  • Inflation can be consistent with magma accumulation, while deflation can reflect magma withdrawal or pressure changes, but neither uniquely predicts an eruption.
  • Gas composition and emissions add chemical evidence, yet no single gas threshold applies to every volcano.
  • Seismicity, deformation, gas, satellite observations and historical behavior must be interpreted as one evolving system.
  • Satellite coverage and surface conditions limit when and how clearly deformation can be detected.
  • Forecasts are updated assessments, not guaranteed dates; live decisions should rely on the responsible volcano observatory.
