How Scientists Tell Tyrannosaur Species Apart From Fossils

Scientists identify tyrannosaur fossils by comparing combinations of anatomical features—not by relying on a single tooth, bone, measurement, or the animal’s size. They assess skull and jaw shape, teeth, growth stage, preservation, and, when available, limb bones and geological context. A convincing identification is one that fits the specimen’s observable features while accounting for how age and damage may have altered them.

What scientists compare in a tyrannosaur fossil

A species diagnosis is built from a suite of features, often called characters. Researchers record which bones are present, how complete the specimen is, whether bones remain articulated, and whether compression or other damage has changed their shape. They then compare the preserved anatomy with specimens assigned to known species.

Geographic and geological context can help narrow down which animals are plausible, but neither a fossil’s location nor its age identifies a species by itself. Context supports anatomical comparison; it does not replace it.

  • Skull proportions: breadth of the snout and rear skull, and how the skull expands behind the eyes.
  • Individual cranial bones: the shape, position, and contacts of bones such as the nasal, lacrimal, and postorbital.
  • Jaws and teeth: jaw shape, tooth-row arrangement, and relevant tooth features considered alongside other anatomy.
  • Growth stage: whether the specimen is juvenile, subadult, or mature, and whether a feature changes as the animal grows.
  • Preservation and other bones: whether the diagnostic parts survive intact, plus limb proportions and context where available.

A published diagnosis of Daspletosaurus horneri, for example, uses a combination of features involving the dental arcade, dentary, lacrimal, and other cranial anatomy—not one measurement alone (Persons, Currie, and Erickson, 2017).

Why the skull is often especially useful

Skull comparisons can reveal differences in proportions and in the shape and arrangement of specific bones. In their 2003 comparison of prepared skulls, Hurum and Sabath described Tyrannosaurus rex as especially broad at the back of the skull and tapering toward the snout. The compared Tarbosaurus bataar skull was narrower in several ventral skull bones, with a less abrupt rearward expansion and a conspicuously domed nasal between the lacrimals.

These are comparative examples, not a universal key that can identify every tyrannosaur fragment. The same study also discusses differences in how elements of the skull and upper jaw are arranged to handle biting forces. When the relevant bones are missing, incomplete, or distorted, those comparisons may not be possible.

Preservation can materially affect the result: a 2019 reassessment noted burial deformation in a tyrannosaur skull that changed its apparent proportions. Researchers must consider such distortion before treating a measured difference as biological (Carr and colleagues, 2019).

How jaws and teeth contribute—and where they can mislead

Tooth count, tooth-row orientation, jaw shape, and the form of the dental arcade can all contribute to identification. Their value depends on the whole character combination and on whether the feature is genuinely distinctive among the specimens being compared.

A 2025 study of the T. rex type skull reassessed two dental characters previously proposed to distinguish species within the Tyrannosaurus hypodigm. The authors found those characters on both sides of the type specimen’s dentaries and judged them taxonomically uninformative. That is a specific reassessment of those proposed characters; it does not mean teeth are generally useless (Observations on the skull of the type specimen of Tyrannosaurus rex, 2025).

Why maturity and individual variation matter

Tyrannosaur anatomy changed during growth. A feature that is prominent in an adult may be small, absent, or shaped differently in a juvenile, so researchers try to compare specimens at similar growth stages when possible. Size alone is not a reliable clock: as Currie cautioned in 2003, many anatomical characters depend on body size rather than age itself (Currie, 2003).

Growth does not make juveniles impossible to identify. In Daspletosaurus, the postorbital bone behind the eye develops a more prominent, roughened projection as the animal grows. Yet other postorbital shape features can help distinguish immature Daspletosaurus from albertosaurines.

In a 2019 reassessment of Alberta fossils, researchers linked the small postorbital TMP 2013.18.11 to Daspletosaurus using a combination of features. They reassigned a different skull, TMP 1994.143.1, from a previous identification as juvenile Daspletosaurus to Gorgosaurus libratus based on albertosaurine anatomy. The authors concluded that many tyrannosaurid diagnostic features are present in young individuals and that juvenile tyrannosaurines and albertosaurines can be easier to distinguish than previously thought. That finding does not guarantee a confident identification for every juvenile specimen (Carr and colleagues, 2019).

When a specimen has limb bones or is incomplete

If skull and limb bones are both available, researchers can compare cranial features with postcranial proportions rather than letting one region decide the identification. But a ratio or count is useful only if its anatomical definition is clear and the compared specimens are appropriate in maturity and completeness. A proposed femur ratio, for instance, is not a universal species test.

For an isolated or damaged fossil, the practical question is how many informative characters actually survive. If key bones are absent or distorted, the evidence may support identification only at a broader level, such as a group of tyrannosaurs, rather than a particular species. The assignment should reflect that uncertainty instead of filling gaps with assumptions.

Why some Tyrannosaurus species assignments remain disputed

Whether late Cretaceous North American fossils assigned to Tyrannosaurus represent more than one species remains contested. A 2022 paper titled “Insufficient Evidence for Multiple Species of Tyrannosaurus in the Latest Cretaceous of North America” challenged a proposal to split the fossils using subtle anatomical and stratigraphic differences. It argued that the evidence did not establish the proposed species and questioned whether some diagnostic traits were unique to Tyrannosaurus (Woodward and colleagues, 2022).

The 2025 type-skull study adds a caution about particular dental characters, but it does not settle every question about variation within Tyrannosaurus. The sound approach is to describe which features support a proposed distinction, consider counterarguments, and avoid presenting the multiple-species interpretation as settled consensus.

A practical way to read a fossil identification

  1. Check what is preserved. Note the bones present, their completeness, whether they remain articulated, and any visible distortion.
  2. Look for a character combination. Ask whether the assignment rests on multiple features across the skull, jaws, teeth, or skeleton rather than one striking trait.
  3. Account for growth. Check whether the compared specimens are at similar maturity and whether the cited feature changes during development.
  4. Separate supporting context from diagnosis. Geography and geological age can constrain possibilities, but should not stand in for anatomical evidence.
  5. Notice the level of certainty. An incomplete specimen may be identifiable only to a broader group; a species-level claim needs enough preserved, informative anatomy.
